Dig in for the seventh-inning stretch
Tony Messenger

Kansas City area Democrats Victor Callahan and Chris Koster are still engaged in their tag-team, back-door filibuster on the village law repeal, adult-oriented business regulation bill. The Senate gallery is engaged and enjoying the show, though the elementary school children seem a tad confused. Let’s hope for their sake, the two senators don’t actually start reading from the actual bill. There is some, how shall we say, interesting language in the bill.

Meanwhile, Sen. Jack Goodman, who merely cares about passing a clean village law bill, says he’s willing to wait the two senators out and see how much energy and commitment they have. That’s a sign that Goodman is concerned that the bill might not become law if it has to go to conference committee.

Callahan and Koster, by the way, have traveled much ground. They’ve discussed TIFs, red-light cameras, baseball, the Kansas City Chiefs and tailgating. Callahan challenged Koster, if he’s “still around” this fall, to go to tailgaters and tell them to stop drinking if he’s so opposed to new entertainment districts in Kansas City.

If the two men are in need of inspiration, I remind them of a certain baseball game earlier this year between my beloved Colorado Rockies and the San Diego Padres. Rockies won the game in the 22nd inning. It lasted into the early morning hours, as it appears the Senate will tonight, er, tomorrow.
