Healthcare how-to

We’re into the Q&A period.

The first one came from a World Wide Tech exec about health care.

President Bush says there are two paths — government paid and private. He immediately dismisses a single-payer or universal system as “government makes choices for you.”

He advocates for private health care to deal with costs.

“Consumerism helps deal with cost, transparency helps deal with cost. thirdly, let’s look at information technology. Finally, one of the cost drivers is lawsuits.

“I happen to believe that private medicine is by far the best route to go. I don’t care what people tell you, America’s health care is on the leading edge of change.”

  • He wants “shopping” and “consumerism.” Advocates  health savings accounts — “very empowering instruments” — and risk pooling for individual businesses.
  • He wants more prescription drug systems like Medicare.
  • Transparency in pricing and quality ratings for doctors.
  • Medical liability reform to stop “junk lawsuits” and keep doctors from practicing “defensive medicine.”

Misguided as usual. He ignores the fact that the US pays far more for health care (16% GDP) than any other country, yet ranks low among industrialized countries among health outcomes. And single payer is not the only path to universal health care. Multipayer systems like in Germany and in France perform very well for much less than our screwed up system.

Finally, someone talking about the #1 reason for healthcare inflation, the lack of transparency in price or quality. How can we ever get control of the cost increases when the h”not for profit” hospitals and the rest of the medical lobby are so adamant about not sharing price or quality data?

We’ve had about all the tort reform we can have in Missouri without shutting down the courthouse to people injured by doctors. What makes you so sure that if you only had more information about price and quality you’d be able to get better healthcare or that the uninsured would have access??? I can’t even get through to my own doctor or his nurse if I have a specific medical question or need an appointment, I’m damn sure not going to call 4 or 5 of them to see who has the best rate on a well woman exam so I can let the person with the lowest price give me my yearly. How can you be so out of touch?

McCain has a new ad trumpeting his BOLD solution to the Health Care Crisis in America. His solution(?) is to SCRAP employer-based health insurance. If you’ve always had Employer Insurance, then his plan will give you the privilege of joining your not-so-fortunate neighbors in receiving lots of letters stamped “REJECTED” or “CANCELED.” They will become your Express Boarding Pass to the “Uninsured Boat.” Don’t panic, though, the Boat will have plenty of TV’s tuned to discussions of Rev. Wright and Flag Pins, … but ~shhhh~ just don’t “rock the boat” by bringing up your Cancer or Asthma or Diabetes.

McCain said, “The Issue Of Economics Is Not Something I’ve Understood.” No kidding.

From the Des Moines Register….

McCain plan to reform health care: It’s scary

The proposal should scare the heck out of the millions of Americans who rely on employer-based coverage. Iowans who have tried to buy affordable coverage on their own know they need more than a tax credit and good health. Sometimes they need a winning lottery ticket.

Buying individual policies means having your health history reviewed. It means not having the bargaining power and protections that come with being part of a plan offered by an employer. And it’s expensive.
