Hulshof talks about the elderly, vets and earnings tax

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Kenny Hulshof picked a postcard-perfect day downtown to pitch his plan for helping Missouri’s seniors and vets.

Hulshof, vying for the GOP nomination for governor, would seek to freeze property tax assessments for Missourians over 65 who make a household income of $52,000 or less.

Though there are already programs to protect seniors from rising taxes, Hulshof and others argue that rising assessments — which means homeowners pay more, even if the tax rate stays the same — are a backdoor tax increase.

Strengthening laws against abusing the elderly would be a priority as well for Hulshof, he said.

Hulshof also said at today’s Kiener Plaza news conference that he would form a “Veterans Advocacy Corps,” and would make the current Veteran’s Commission a “stand-alone” commission, moving it out from under the state Department of Public Safety.

Responding to a question, Hulshof also indicated that he sides with opponent Sarah Steelman’s call to rescind the one percent earnings tax in St. Louis and Kansas City.

“It’s a drain on the economic growth,” said Hulshof, who studied agricultural economics at Mizzou. “Theoretically, I would like to see the city’s earnings tax eliminated.”

to: Hulshof Thank You for thinking of the Vets here in Missouri. Giving the Vets their own Dept. is an excellent idea and one that will serve our Vets with the Respect they deserve. I have a small issue to most Vets, but a large issue to those of us who are falling between the cracks. I am 57 yrs old and have been forced to take Soc. Sec. Disability. The SSA will not allow a recipient of SSA benefits to receive Medicare until 2 Yrs. after their award. I am a USAF Reserve - SGT. - Honorable Discharge - 1968-1974 (Vietnam Era). The VA says i do not have enough active duty time, SSA says i have a 2 year waiting time, Blue Cross/ Blue says thanks for all your previous premiums - but no money no coverage, Medicaid says we will give you coverage if you pay us 575.00 a month as your spenddown (another word for premium). I have talked to my Mo. congressman,Mo. Senator, US Congresman, US Senator, the Director’s Office of MoHealth and the Governor’s office and received only lip service - not even a letter . They have Medical Insurance and i have nothing except a record of paying my taxes and serving my country. There are a whole raft load of politicians including our Governor and Bill Clinton who never put on a uniform - they have lifetime Health Care and we do not. Tell me how that works out for us patriotic saps ?? SGT. Terry Nevius USAFRES Honorable Discharge 1968-1974. Proud to be an American even if i have no real quality of life. I love Missouri and always will, i despise the lack of its leaders to be there for the people that made it possible for them to have the opportunities they have had !!!!!!!!! Sincerely, I have always made it before. I still will and i willcontinue to fight for what is right and hope at the very least those that follow me will be acknowledged !
