Immigration bill clears backlog

A broad immigration bill finally cleared the Senate this morning, by a final vote of 27-7.

The bill had been held up by bipartisan forces — a nine-hour discussion filled with nearly 20 Democratic amendments, and a daylong self-imposed backup by Sen. Jack Goodman over the “village law” repeal.

This morning, Goodman voted the bill out of his fiscal oversight committee, and with little discussion, senators voted to send the changes back to the House.

Negotiators from both chambers will likely meet today to work out changes on the bill. The bill includes provisions to prevent public benefits from going to illegal immigrants, stop cities from harboring them, and also crack down on the employers who hire them.

The biggest issue facing negotiators was the inclusion of penalties for employers who misclassify their workers as “contractors.” Supporters say that practice is a major loophole allowing many in the construction business to hire illegal workers.

Sen. Scott Rupp, R-Wentzville, handled the bill in the Senate and will likely have a strong influence during the conference committee.

During debate, Rupp said he agreed with the misclassification provision, but wanted it kept out of the bill because it is “radioactive” to House leaders.

Legislators hope to wrap up their negotiations today so the bill can be given final approval tomorrow — the sessions last workday.

As an added bonus, Gov. Matt Blunt threatened yesterday to call a special session if lawmakers don’t pass an immigration bill.

Swell. The racist xenophobe wingnuts in Jeff City pass a bill that will make you pay to get a birth certificate or passport before you can even register to vote. Creating a solution where there is no problem, the GOP majority proudly brays that they’re somehow defending Missourians against illegal immigrants. Earth to nativist boneheads: illegal immigration is NOT a problem in Missouri. A legislature filled with bible-thumping rightwingers intent on appeasing their radical racist base IS a problem in Missouri.

Wonder what Missouri will do with all their vacant apartments and houses when the Hispanics leave. An apartment company in Postville Iowa, which was raided this week now has a 75% vacancy rate, and the owners have to pay a $50,000 monthly mortgage on their rental property. How does the US handle the housing/credit crisis — scare 10-12 million working folks into leaving the country. Seems to me some sort of compromise — or God forbid - amnesty is going to be necessary. The borders should have been secured years ago, but they weren’t now we need to deal fairly with those that are here.

As an example the Postville, meatpacking plant being caught up in sweeps of (ICE) Immigration and customs Enforcement, it was discovered at least 390 illegal aliens working at ‘ Agriprocessors’ Not only had they voted in union matters, but the courts deemed in it’s ruling valid. The question is how many illegal foreign nationals are voting in primaries? If people came to this country illegal and broke one law. It doesn’t need any stretch of the imagination to know that they will perjury themselves and vote in our general election, when so much is a stake; our countries future?
Overpopulation, congestion, urban sprawl, pollution, environmental damage, crime, diminishing resources, Diseases, lack of affordable housing, depressed wages, underground economic, fraudulent documents, identity theft, tax evasion, soaring crime rate, increased tax burdens, overcrowded schools, uneducated children, overcrowded prisons, inadequate health care, the balkanization of our communities and a large and growing population with loyalty to other Nations. Just read this disturbing revelation of costs, that our government skims from our paycheck to pay an illegal Paul. (www.eagleforum.org/sources)
Right now Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) is expected to try to add an amnesty for illegal-alien agricultural workers to the Iraq supplemental spending bill when that bill is marked up today in the Senate Appropriations Committee. In addition, arm tactics against anti-illegal-immigration Democrats in an effort to kill the SAVE Act (H.R. 4088) for the year. North Carolina Democrat Heath Shuler’s SAVE Act is an incredible threat to the unscrupulous businesses of America who insist on illegal labor to hold down their labor costs. Most business owners are not like that, but the outlaw businesses have the ear of Speaker Pelosi.

Pelosi and her team are intimidating Democrats to make sure they do not sign the Discharge Petition that would bring the SAVE Act to the floor for a vote. Call your illegal alien sympathisers and say no, to any kind of AMNESTY toll-free ( 202-224-3121)

War Dog… The radical racist base you refer to consists of a vast majority of the public who support enforcement of immigration laws. This majority includes most Hispanic legal residents who suffer from the effects of the illegal invasion along with the rest of us. Your statement that illegal immigration is NOT a problem in Missouri is FALSE. But, contrary to your tactics, I won’t question your integrity or intelligence for disseminating such a falsehood. I won’t even call you any childish names.

mulffy…. we need to deal fairly with citizens and residents who are here legally. How many of the tens of millions of invaders do you think are career criminals, disease carriers, or terrorists. A few dozen? A few hundred? Few thousand?

I have no sympathy for the apartment company that apparently rented the majority of its units to illegals.

First, they were aiding and abetting the illegals in breaking the law.

Second, renting the majority of your units to tenants with a single, specific source of income is a risky proposition.

By failing to diversify its residents to include those who came from and/or work elsewhere, the landlord left itself vulnerable to any event that would displace all those tenants. Whether that event was a long-delayed enforcement of the immigration laws or a plant shutdown, the landlord found out what can happen when puts all his eggs in one basket.

If the “working folks” that are here illegally no longer have houses to build, what would you prefer happens, have them stay and compete with legal workers for the few remaining construction jobs? Let them go home.

Funny how the argument changes. First, those who would have the illegals stay claimed there was no way we could get ten million people to leave. Now that circumstances have changed so that many of them want to leave, these same people say we should do something to discourage them from leaving.

While we shouldn’t bail out the landlord who now can’t pay his mortgage, that mortgage is probably a fraction of the tax dollars that go toward the cost of public services used by the illegals above the taxes they pay.

WarDog (post #1)

The apartment owners are all wealthy (republican)developers… rapers of the land anyway. Don’t you WANT to see them SCREWED?

I swear I’ll never understand the loonie left.

Also allow me to assure you that I will see to it the law is enforced without regard to race, creed, color or nation of national origin… if they are here ILLEGALY through them ALL out!

tsquare–I assume grammar and spelling weren’t mandatory around the square household. I take it you mean “If they are here illegally, THROW them all out.”
There is not–one–instance—not one—where either an illegal alien has attempted to vote, or where someone used a counterfeit i.d. to try and vote. Not one single instance. The illegal immigrant population in Missouri is estimated at-what?-22,000 max. Let’s assume that’s men, women, and children, say four to a family. That would mean of the 22,000, 5,555 are males and probably working. Recent GAO figures estrimate that 62% of illegals in this country pay taxes through paycheck deductions. That would be, ropughly and extremely conservatively, 3,400 Missouri taxpayers paying money into state coffers and Social Security, and are ineligible to receive any of those benefits. It seems to me the illegals are doing us quite a few favors. For one, they’re paying upwards of a million-and-a-half dollars a year in Missouri state taxes. Social Security and Medicare payroll withholding combined is 7.65% of a worker’s gross. Let’s say the 3,400 estimated Missouri illegal alien taxpayers are making roughly an average of $35,000 a year. That’s a little over NINE MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR in Social Security and Medicare taxes paid by people who’ll never collect a cent from them. And that’s just Missouri, for just one year. Nativist xenophobes should get a grip on reality–illegal immigration has been, overall, a great financial deal for this country. Unless, of course, you’re–eek–scared of Mexicans.

War Dog… Mark Twain wrote there are three kinds of lies… Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics. You should quit worrying about tsquare’s word selection and polish up your research skills. There are hundreds of statistics that support the exact opposite of your views. Despite cover-up efforts there have been dozens of news stories of DWI deaths, violence and crimes committed by the already illegal invaders. Some are Mexican, some are Russian, and some may be Wahabi. Some invaded across our porous borders; others just overstayed student or work visas. Regardless of race, origin, or method of entry, it behooves us to demand that our laws be enforced and the politicians live up to their oath to defend the nation. If you can’t understand that logic, you need government protection more than most. Trying to play the race card is as pathetic as trying to be the grammar police on an internet blog.
