Krewson, Williams launch anti-panhandler effort

St. Louis Alderwoman Lyda Krewson, D-28th Ward ward, will join city Treasurer Larry Williams and Tricia Roland-Hamilton, president of the Central West End Association, at an event Friday that will launch their “Real Change” campaign to discourage panhandling for money.

The event is slated for 11 a.m. Friday, at the corner of Maryland and Euclid avenues.

According to their release: “REAL CHANGE is an innovative program designed to discourage the random giving of money to panhandlers, while encouraging contributions to local service providers.  The program is being launched in conjunction with the passage of an ordinance earlier this year restricting panhandling.”

Thank you, Lyda. I used to live in her ward, and the constant harassment by panhandlers at busy intersections was both unpleasant and dangerous.

I agree with Nick. Panhandling has become an unpleasant issue to deal with, especially in the CWE…..and Downtown as well! I applaud Lyda, Larry and Tricia! This is a proactive campaign that once again proves that our City leaders are thinking ahead, trying to improve the quality of life for those of us who have chosen to reside in the City.
