Midnight special: Nixon rival gets last-minute ballot reprieve
We spoke too soon — looks like Jay Nixon will have some marginal opposition after all.
On Tuesday, the deadline to certify the August primary ballot, Secretary of State Robin Carnahan posted on updated candidate list, showing that Nixon’s token rivals for the Democratic nomination for governor had been disqualified.
That, at least, is what Carnahan’s office thought.
Turns out the list, posted in the late afternoon, was a few hours premature. Candidates had until the end of Tuesday — the very end — to prove their eligibility.
A Carnahan spokesman now says that, sometime before midnight, Democrat Daniel Carroll of Shelby County in northeast Missouri provided paperwork proving that he has lived in the state the 10 years required to become governor.
The Secretary of State’s office has updated their website to reflect the change, though don’t look for Nixon to revise his campaign strategy.
