NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri, the state counterpart of the national abortion rights group NARAL Pro-Choice America, conducted 8,500 robo-calls this afternoon in the wake of the national group’s endorsement today of Democratic presidential frontrunner Barack Obama.

The robo-call emphasizes that Missouri NARAL is neutral in the presidential contest between Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton, said Missouri NARAL executive director Pamela Sumners.

Sumners recorded the call herself about 1:30 p.m., right after hearing of the national group’s announcement — and getting complaints from area abortion-rights activists.

“In our membership demographic, a lot of longtime women’s rights supporters are strong supporters of Hillary Clinton,” Sumners said.

“If we had been consulted, we would have said, ‘Let this play out,’ ” said Sumners. “We have two strong pro-choice candidates” in Obama and Clinton.

NARAL’s real focus, she said, should be to challenge the presumptive GOP nominee, John McCain, who opposes most abortions.

In 1997, Obama voted against SB 230, which would have turned doctors into felons by banning so-called partial-birth abortion, & against a 2000 bill banning state funding. “…these bills didn’t include anything…to protect the health of the mother.”

“The Republicans…loved to hold votes on ‘partial birth’ and ‘born alive’. . . because they wanted to pigeonhole Democrats” said Pam Sutherland, the president and CEO of the Illinois Planned Parenthood Council. Obama said “My members are being attacked. We need to figure out a way to protect members and to protect women”

Sutherland convinced him to vote “present.” A “present” was as good as an outright “no” because it kept the bills from reaching the majority needed to pass.

In 8 years in IL senate, Obama voted 129 times PRESENT out of 4000 votes cast. That is only 3% yet he passed over 800 bills!

Illinois legislators often vote “present” and for a variety of reasons. Sometimes blocs of lawmakers do it as a protest…in other cases, lawmakers do it to signal objections to the details of a measure that they support in principle.

Hillary Clinton has been standing on the firing line and taking the bullets for women’s rights and Choice her entire political career. This is outragous! Obama can be trusted on NOTHING he is a cipher. This is an act of treachery and will not be forgiven by legions of women. In November I along with millions of other women will write in Hillary’s name and leave the Democratic Party.

Show me, you’re indeed correct. Obama can’t win the general. He couldn’t before the party became divided and he certainly can’t now. John McCain should send a letter of thanks to BHO, MSNBC, and all of pro-Obama supporters that have trod Clinton supporters under foot. If they’d only been respectful, it wouldn’t have had to be this way. I won’t reward their behavior with a vote for Obama and neither will millions of others.

Thanks NARAL! Now Obama is linked to yet another extremist organization. This is very good news!

I am a resident of Oakland, Ca and am outraged that NARAL threw Hillary away! There is no logical reason why they could not have waited until the real candidate was chosen to endorse anyone. It is a slap in the face to Hillary, to say the least, and to all women who have supported NARAL in the past and in the future. I believe that NARAL’s action is alienating many, many women across this nation and will leave them lacking the much financial support that they need to continue. I, for one, will never give another penny to them! It is unconscienable that in a campaign that has proven it is anti-female rather than anti-black and Hlllary, a woman, representing women’s rights in many ways, that NARAL would go against her. How stupid!

It’s a shame that feminists feel that it’s necessary to be so divisive. I’m an Obama supporter. If Sen. Clinton had won, I would have voted for her–not happily, but with more enthusiasm than for Sen. McCain. But now the Clinton supporters are threatening to boycott the Dem party simply because their candidate didn’t win. Is this productive? Will this further the pro-choice goals of NARAL or NOW or any other feminist organization? No. It will simply play into the hands of the pro-life movement and Sen. McCain’s campaign.

The St. Louis Post Dispatch recently reported that 1 in 4 female teens in st. louis have a sexually transmitted disease. Thats no suprise considering that Planned Parenthood promotes sex among teens. Planned Parenthood targets teens and blacks. Planned Parenthood is evil from it’s inception and still declares Margaret Sanger a hero!

“Take our survey!
Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region is starting a YOUNG FRIENDS group to prove the theory that drinks, sex and politics do mix well. Take our survey and let us know how you’d like to get involved in St. Louis’ newest and sexiest networking group!”

It is not silly or pointless for Clinton supporters to boycott the Democratic party in the next election. Women’s suffragists did the same thing (women could vote in some states and were asked by one of the major suffrage groups to boycott the ruling party for failing to support women’s suffrage in other states and at the federal level).

Senator Clinton has been wronged in this election. She was wronged by the press coverage. She was wronged by the Obama campaign (who remembers the “monster” comment? ), and she was wronged by the Democratic Party, along with the voters of Florida and Michigan. At the very least Obama and the Democratic Party stood by silently when the media made sexist attacks on the Senator. And while Senator Clinton was joked about, threatened, and worst of all dismissed, all women were dismissed. By asking her to sit down and shut up, they are asking all women to sit down and shut up. Is it that shocking that women would want to stand silently by and let this election happen without our knee-jerk support?

Sitting out, voting for McCain, or, best yet, writing in Hillary Clinton, sends a message to the Democratic Party: you cannot win without us, and you must EARN our respect. Do not take us for granted, and never never never tell us to “sit down and shut up.”
