RFT gives Schlafly the “star” treatment

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Did you catch the front of this week’s Riverfront Times?

It’s probably not what Washington University administrators want parents — many who have spent more than $125,000 on four years of education — to see when they come to town for tomorrow’s graduation ceremony.

The alt-weekly gives Phyllis Schlafly, the conservative icon who will be honored by Wash. U. on Friday, the star treatment, giving her a faux place on the St. Louis Walk of Fame.

The paper’s tab cover, which hit stands yesterday, features a mock-up of a Schlafly star on the Loop.

Inside, the paper groups Schlafly with other “snubbed St. Louis celebs,” including Russell Bliss (who sprayed harmful dioxins that shut down the town of Times Beach) and Stagger Lee (whose slaying of Billy Lyons in a St. Louis tavern has inspired musicians from Elton John to the Grateful Dead).

Of course, Schlafly is not exactly snubbed. Despite pressure from students and faculty, Wash U. Chancellor Mark Wrighton will still get an honorary degree from the school on Friday, even though he personally “strongly” disagrees with her views.

Why are there so many at Wash U, RFT & St Louis Post Dispatch who are totally against the morals, convictions and beliefs that built this country? You wouldn’t like our founding fathers either, I fear. That’s too bad for you.

Phyllis Schlafly stopped the 2006 St. Louis County smoking ban that threatened the bars and restaurants whose advertisements keep the RFT afloat. She and her friends made Odenwald back down. But the RFT was too timid at that time to take any stand for or against anyone or anything.

Now, that’s family values! Keeping the kiddies breathing second hand smoke around their chicken fingers and fries in the name of her very own brand of liberty. One more reason to love her.

Penelope, she stopped a powerful politician ready to impose a law that would further hurt family businesses already hurt by the casinos.

Penelope, a 13 percent or greater increase in drunk driving fatalities due to a smoking ban would have hurt St. Louis families too.

a 13% increase in drinking fatalities, Gracie? website smebsite; small liars, big liars, and statistics; methinks you’ve had more than one too many; maybe if we all just smoked three packs a day, drinking fatalities would really go down eventually! other kinds of fatalities too!
