Web Watch: Campaigns+genMTV=YouTube gold?

Below is a look at a brand new (yet another) professional music video supporting Sen. Barack Obama. This one comes from rapper TI$A and allegedly will be the debut single from his new album.

The psychedelic “Imma Vote Obama Way” includes cameos by a number of hip hop stars including Kanye West and Jay-Z. It’s officially the third production to tap celebrities young and old to further energize one of Obama’s strongest voting blocs.

The first two — “Yes We Can” and “We Are the Ones” – were produced by will.i.am and were mixed with Obama speeches and the chants of supporters. “Yes We Can” in particular became a YouTube phenom.

(For the record, I’m leaving out Obama Girl of the count here, though I’ve talked at length with the character’s creator Ben Relles of Barely Political as well as the parents of the model-actress Amber Lee Ettinger who plays the Obama-loving super heroine. They are nice people and not obsessively political.)

And though these videos are produced by folks outside the campaign, Obama’s people have at least embraced the efforts of will.i.am. I’ve previously posted the “Yes We Can” video, but below is the “We Are the Ones” take.

Sen. Hillary Clinton, too, has tried to tap the drawing power of celebrity and pop culture. Last year, she ran a contest using YouTube and her campaign site to pick a theme song.

Below are a) the Sopranos spoof she used to tease people to the web site when they had finally picked Celine Dion’s ”You and I” as the winner and b) the music video the campaign produced to the song.

Various supporters of Sen. John McCain have also put together musical montages of photos supporting their candidate. The most creative one I’ve seen is simultaneously and attack on Obama and Clinton with original lyrics and an arrangment of an Eric Clapton song. That said, it hasn’t gotten a lot of attention.

This infusion of music/celebrity/pop into the campaign still has me wondering. Obviously a great number of people have watched these videos and perhaps they get to the style of the candidate.

Candidates are always looking for engaging ways to reach voters, and that’s necessarily a bad thing. But what do you think: Are these funny? Touching? Inspiring? Pointless?

Hey Adam just for information Obama Girl is the first video and the rest are copycats. Get your story straight and stop being so ignorant, just because her parents aren’t obsessively political doesn’t mean Amber is. If it wasn’t for the creator of the Obama Girl and Amber herself, there wouldn’t be anybody representing presidential candidates in this manner(viral videos). I think credit should be given to those who deserve it and not the ones who copy it. Obama Girl changed the face of politics and made a huge contribution to who Obama is today.
