Blunt, MO GOP defend McCain

In a release just now from the Missouri Republican Party, Gov. Matt Blunt offered this rebuke of criticisms of Sen. John McCain’s record. This stems from remarks made by Gen. Wes Clark, an Obama backer, earlier.

When I was a plebe in my first year at the Naval Academy, I first began to learn about the heroism of John McCain and his fellow prisoners in the midst of daily brutality.  His is a model of heroic leadership in the face of tremendous adversity and his military service and sacrifice for our country’s freedom remain an inspiration

Unfortunately one of Barack Obama’s campaign surrogates has attempted to demean John McCain’s military service to our country for political reasons.

Senator McCain’s military service, the inspiring story of his sacrifice in captivity during the Vietnam War and his strong support for defending our freedom and helping spread democracy around the world are just a few of his many qualifications to be our next President of the United States.

The Obama campaign’s attacks on John McCain’s resilient leadership, military service and readiness would be laughable were they not so unpatriotic.  Republicans are ready to compare John McCain’s heroism, military service and readiness to be the next President with Barack Obama’s any day of the week.

Jared Craighead followed up with the following:

Today, Barack Obama will tell the American people what he thinks it means to be a patriot while his surrogates continue to attack the military service record of John McCain.  The Missouri Republican Party is calling on all elected Democrats in Missouri and Senator Obama to denounce these despicable and vicious attacks on the military service of Senator McCain.

Even though Senator Obama has demonstrated that on issue after issue that he doesn’t mean what he says – it is our hope that while sharing with Americans what patriotism means to him, Senator Obama will tell his surrogates to stop attacking John McCain’s military service and record.

These were the same people who were defending Kerry when his war record was being attacked?

Hmmm. Would anybody really want Matt Blunt as a character witness? And why does criticizing McCain on the war and the facts of his experience make you being unpatriotic? Does that mean that anyone who criticizes Obama on the issues or his own experience is automatically a racist?

All Clark said was that McCain hasn’t “held executive responsibility” in overseeing warfare. He said McCain “was a hero to me,” and he didn’t say anything critical at all about McCain’s service.

Typical GOP overreaction to scare Democrats and the press into backing down when they raise a valid point. The Republicans don’t want anyone questioning McCain’s “national security” credentials because if he loses on that issue, he doesn’t have much left to run on.

This is a classic rhetorical fallacy: When you can’t defend yourself from an allegation, you immediately attack your critic. And if you’re a Republican, you play the patriotism card.

“The Missouri Republican Party is calling on all elected Democrats in Missouri and Senator Obama to denounce these despicable and vicious attacks on the military service of Senator McCain. ”

Thanks for the advice, MO-GOP! We’ll get right on that.

Clark said being shot down as a pilot doesn’t qualify you for the presidency. He’s right.
The MSM loves McCain and thinks it’s anathema to criticize him for anything. These are the same people who wouldn’t criticize GWB’s Iraq strategy up to and after his invasion of that country.
The MSM needs to grow a pair.

So what does being a war hero have to do with being president? Give him his medal and his heroes welcome (even though he wasn’t good enough to keep from getting shot down). Does this make him qualified to run the economy? Frankly, the fact that he was fooled by G.W. Bush on Iraq should tell you all you need to know about him. Incompetent.

Darren, how did Kerry’s time in war made him the better candidate for the Presidency but McCain’s time in the same war doesnt mean squat?

I dont think you can call the south side of Chicago a war zone, after all, handguns have been illegal there for 25 years, so those streets are safe, so what qualifies Obamessiah to be President?

si vis,
No one has said McCain is “unfit” to lead, so get a grip. No one is even attacking McCain’s record. Unless calling the man a “hero” is an insult.

At the same time, I’d suggest to anyone on the left that it’s in very poor taste to say anything negative about McCain’s service in Vietnam. If you don’t know the facts about his time as a POW, then you’d be best to learn more about it. The man truly is a hero, and he deserves respect for that.

The question here is whether his career as a pilot and his time as a prisoner make him especially more qualified than anyone else to be commander in chief. It’s a legitimate question and one that McCain and his supporters should be willing to address without pretending to be offended and calling a General like Wesley Clark unpatriotic.

Seriously, who’s tossing around the insults here?

Who called Clark unpatriotic? Just because he had his picture taken exchanging hats with a war criminal at a meeting not endorsed by NATO or the US doesnt mean he is unpatriotic. Just because he managed to get fired by Slick Willy doesnt make him unpatriotic. Just because four years ago he tried to tell us we needed a leader with combat experience and now he is saying combat experience means nothing doesnt mean he is unpatriotic. Criticizing Obamessiah or Clark is not calling the unpatriotic.

John McCain is NOT a hero. A hero does something to save somebody else’s life–not their own life.

McCain Supporters: Don’t Google: “The wife U. S. Republican John McCain callously left behind”
