Coleman endorses Wright-Jones

In a move not wholly unexpected, outgoing state Sen. Maida Coleman today endorsed state Rep. Robin Wright-Jones in the Democratic Aug. 5 primary to select Coleman’s successor.

“I recruited Robin to replace me in the state House when I ran for the Senate,” Coleman said today, shortly before headlining a news conference at Wright-Jones’ campaign office at 2400 S. Jefferson.

Coleman, the state Senate’s minority leader, lauded Wright-Jones strong support for public education and cited Wright-Jones’ earlier endorsements from various state and local teachers groups.

Neither mentioned by name Wright-Jones’ rival, state Rep. Rodney Hubbard. But both cited his financial support from voucher-advocate Rex Sinquefield as exidence that Hubbard didn’t hold the same respect for public schools, especially in the city of St. Louis.

Also present to show his support for Wright-Jones: the Rev. Sammie Jones, former president of the St. Louis Clergy Coalition. The reverend said he was acting as an individual, and not as a representative of any group.

As far as her own political or professional future, Coleman said she was now focusing solely on the August and November elections, and her efforts to help various Democrats.

Besides Wright-Jones, Coleman mentioned “my friend,” the likely Democratic nominee for governor, Attorney General Jay Nixon.

Rodney Hubbard is a strong and active supporter of ensuring that every child in St. Louis—and all of Missouri for that matter—receives a high-quality education. He is portrayed here as being anti-public school, which is entirely untrue. He is passionate about the reform of these schools and districts—which is evident in both his current campaign and his legislative record. He does not support the system that is currently severely failing! Hubbard wants to see real changes in the public schools system and will not stand for the status quo when it comes to the tremendously significant issue of our youth and ultimately the future of our community.

Because of Rodney’s passionate fight for pubic education improvements, those that oppose making any changes to the failing schools (such as the above mentioned ‘various state and local teacher groups’) are an easy target for Robin to gain support without working hard. And Robin clearly hates hard work, judging by her political record of not having a single bill passed in her eight years in office. Wouldn’t a true ‘supporter’ of public schools remedy their failing status instead of doing absolutely nothing?
