Gibbons unhappy with SCOTUS ruling on rapists

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Today’s ruling from the nation’s high court that capital punishment is fit only for murderers – and not, as some states would like, for those who rape children — has special resonance in Missouri.  Mike Gibbons

After the abduction and sexual assault of Shawn Horbeck and Ben Ownby by Michael J. Devlin, State Sen. John Loudon pushed for a law that would make similar crimes eligible for the death penalty.

The legislation never came to a final vote in Jefferson City, perhaps out of concern that it would be ruled moot if the Supreme Court came to a decision like it did today.

State Sen. Mike Gibbons– a candidate for attorney general whose current district includes the Kirkwood neighborhood where Shawn and Ben were found – said he would use every legal penalty left against child molesters.

Said Gibbons in a statement: “We will lock the door and throw away the key on those vermin.”

Too bad Loudon is termed out. I agree with him on this one. I think we need to keep pressing to protect kids. I am sure Loudon’s wife will continue the fight.

While I can see why an action that does not kill anyone, or is not intended to kill anyone, can be said to not merit a death penalty, the Court’s majority opinion leaves a LOT to be desired, that’s for sure! OsiSpeaks[dot]com
