Guess who’s behind “Save AB” website?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Since arriving in St. Louis, Ed Martin has been a litigator, an aide to the archbishop, ran the city Elections Board and — most notoriously, perhaps — had a short but tumultuous turn as Gov. Matt Blunt’s chief of staff. SaveAB.com

In his spare time, he’s written a regular newspaper column and offered additional commentary on Web video.

Now, he’s got a new mission: Keeping A.B. in the U.S.A.

Martin has helped start an online petition, SaveAB.com, to protest the hostile takeover bid of St. Louis brewing institution Anheuser-Busch by Belgian beer giant InBev.

“Americans don’t want the Statue of Liberty bought by the Saudis or the Washington Monument purchased by the Chinese,” Martin said in a new release yesterday. “Shareholders should resist choosing dollars over American jobs. Selling out to the Belgians is not worth it - because this is about more than beer: it’s about our jobs and our nation.”

The release warned of future action, including stock buys, boycotts and rallies at — where else? — Busch Stadium.

Posted this on an earlier thread, but …

What’s the deal with these anti-free market, socialist Republicans. If AB wants to be sold, then what right does the government or anyone else have to interfere with their decision? We should let capitalism decide. It’s the best system in the world, and corporations always know best.

This is like Uncle Sam selling the family silver service.

Our Nation is losing its identity as the American way of life
is economically partitioned and globally bought and sold.

The King of Beers is all about what made and built America…
Charity work, theme parks, athletics at all levels, good jobs,
so much more that now will be at the risk of a different budget mindset…

Who else can stand in these shoes of an American Bred and Born Clydesdale
and say The KING is HERE … and that the Kingdom is still America’s
red, white and blue? Is Lady Liberty really willing to let Her KING go?

Shecky… Go ahead and don’t get run over by some clydesdales

Whoa gang. Hold your clydesdales for one second. I never said we shouldn’t save AB. I absolutely think we should, and I encourage the government to get involved and put the kybosh on this nonsense before a ton of St. Louis jobs get lost.

My rub is with boys like Blunt and Martin, who expend so much hot air extolling the virtues of the free market and business. So why are THEY making such a fuss when this is just capitalism in action? Because they’re hypocrites, that’s why.

I pray the AB deal does fall through. It’s a good company, good employer, and a major part of St. Louis’ culture. I just hope that all the same Republicans who are clamoring now about saving the “jobs” will be there the next time a company talks about moving jobs overseas.

Sheck, I think it would be terrible for AB to sell but if the collective shareholders think it’s a good deal, let the chips fall where they may. If someone happened along and offered to buy your house for an attractive premium, you would be packing your stuff by the end of the day even if they were martians. This deal is no different.

I’ve done my fair share of consumption of AB products and have owned their stock for several years. If this deal goes, I sell my stock and start drinking a different brand.

Actually, Amazed, that’s exactly where you are wrong. If someone (anyone) offered me a great price for my house, I might consider moving, but I wouldn’t leave my hometown. I love where I live, and I love my neighborhood, and I especially don’t want to move to Belgium.

Add to that, if my moving meant that my neighbors were all going to have some Belgian kook move in who would destroy the character of my neighborhood and severely damage their property values (let alone cost them their jobs), I definitely wouldn’t sell my house. I care about my neighbors and wouldn’t want to hurt them.

Hopefully the major shareholders in AB are wise enough to recognize that where you come from and the place you call home is something you cannot put a price on. Hopefully they also recognize that it’s the hardworking employees that make AB great, and they won’t toss them and their dedication to AB under the bus for something so much less valuable like money.

Shecky, and everyone else:

This boat is sailing… it’s gone. Kiss those cute clydesdales goodbye.

Who owns AB? Money funds… you know those people we pay to make us money for our 401k’s? All well and good… we all love to make money and these folks are good at it. They will make money for us when they sell out AB to Inbev.

Oh, and all that ‘warm and fuzzy’ from Inbev? Seems like we heard all of that from American Airlines just a few short years ago… over the body of TWA. Right.

Turn out the lights, roll up whatever sidewalks are left. This deal and this town are done.

According to his release, Martin proposes that PRIVATE individuals and companies encourage shareholders not to sell out. He encourages the use of stock buys (free market), boycotts (free market) and rallies (free market). I don’t agree that the government should get involved. His website makes absolutley no mention of government involvement.

Having read many of Shecky’s past postings I understand he doesn’t recognize free market activities when he sees them.

While Joe Bud drinker thinks this is shame, and it is. It is free market capitalism at its best. Which is why the Institutinal investors want it.These are the people who brought you “The Tech Bubble”, ” The Housing Bubble” and their latest hit “The Credit Crunch”. Americans have not fought for the textile, steel, or automobile Indusries. Even the beer industry(SABMiller) All of which have suffered from foriegn investors or have been shipped overseas. This is the latest body blow by globalism. It just hurts more cause it hit home.
