Haywood backs Calloway as successor
State Rep. Esther Haywood, barred by term limits from running again, has endorsed attorney Don Calloway as her replacement.
Calloway, 28, is an associate at Lathrop and Gage downtown. He is seeking office for the first time, but already has the support of local powerbrokers such as U.S. Rep. Lacy Clay.
In a release today, the Calloway campaign said Haywood would be helping the campaign with supplies and sending a letter of support to voters.
Calloway is one of three Democrats running for the open seat in the 71st Distirct, which includes Pine Lawn and Bel-Nor in north St. Louis County. He’ll face Roger Wilson (no, not that Roger Wilson; this one worked for former Sen. Jean Carnahan) and Vernon Harlan, a community college professor.

Calloway is an amazing young man. He has an amazing depth and bredth of knowledge encompassing the issues facing not just his primarily african american constituents of the 70th district, but also other oppressed communties within the greater Saint Louis region. We could all benefit from someone with his experience in Jefferson City.
I’ve looked deeply at the candidates in this district (which covers UMSL). Calloway has been working hard. The other reps - Vernon Harlan and Roger Wilson don’t even compare. Take a look at the MEC filing on Harlan. He’s raised a lot of money - but over half of it goes to his cell phone and is written off as ‘charity’…..to me, that either means buying votes or buying items for himself at Walmart…WTF?…….And Wilson…Well if you want to take him seriously, the man has to step up and do some work in the district…. Granted it may be more about the ward endorsements in this area, but Calloway is an intelligent young man who would be a strong person to build the community strength of the 20+ municipalities representing the 70th district.
……just my 2 cents….
