Hop to it: Aldermen ask for help to keep AB in St. Louis
Jake Wagman
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Aldermen today urged St. Louis residents to do their part to keep Anheuser-Busch from becoming the latest victim of global consolidation.

Reports have the international beer giant InBev attempting a hostile acquisition of the St. Louis brewing institution.

At City Hall this morning, aldermen unanimously passed a resolution asking “St. Louisans to do everything in their power to ensure that Anheuser-Busch has the support of the community to maintain the designation of being the leading American brewer.”

Alderman Stephen Conway, who pushed the resolution, pleaded with the many individuals in St. Louis who own AB stock to resist the short-term gains offered by a takeover attempt.

Follow the lead of August Busch IV,” said Conway, referring to the Budweiser scion who has rejected InBev’s encroachments.

Conway, seeking to stir up some patriotic allegiance for the King of Beers, pondered the possibility of a foreign company calling the shots on Pestalozzi Street.

“I don’t know what their logo is,” Conway said. “They are from Brazil. It could be a coco plant. It could be a banana.” (Actually, the company is based in Belgium. And this is their logo.)

Busch, Conway pointed out, is represented by an eagle. You know, just like America.

“Anheuser-Busch is a St. Louis company,” Conway said. “And an American company.”
