Hubbard savors endorsement on opponent’s turf
Landing a ward endorsement is always nice — getting it in the opposition’s backyard is extra sweet.![]()
State Senate hopeful Rodney Hubbard announced today that he’s received the backing of Sixth Ward Democrats — the home organization of opponent Robin Wright-Jones.
“Our membership was very impressed by Rodney’s strong history of getting things done in Jefferson City,” said Sixth Ward Alderman Kacie Starr Triplett. “I look forward to working with him to make sure he is the next senator of the 5th District.”
Triplett is backing Hubbard over constituent Wright-Jones, who lives in the Gate District neighborhood.
But the ward’s support might have something to do with Board President Lewis Reed– the ward’s former alderman – who has become a close political ally with Hubbard as both have sought higher office.

I’m disappointed to hear the above. I had thought the new Alderperson was a little more progressive, and I certainly thought Alderman President Reed was.
Whereas Chris Koster in no way registers on the Democrat-o-Meter, Rodney Hubbard only slightly moves the needle, based on some of his prior votes:
SS#6 SCS SSB389—Voted to sell off MOHELA assets
HB 808—Voted to spend MO taxpayer money to send kids to private shools, instead of properly funding our public schools.
CCS SS HCS HB 1865—Coted to limit the ability of the state to increase funding to state colleges and universities.
SS SB1—Voted to limit the ability of non-parents in giving reproductive choice information to young women
HS SB 762—Voted to privatize child services.
To this Democrat, those aren’t very progressive positions. I’m personally not taken with Rep. Hubbard.
It’s very unfortunate that thanks to maneuverings of city bosses and ward heelers like this a district as progressive as this part of the City could end up with somebody like Hubbard representing it in Jeff City. He’s voted with Matt Blunt Republicans for years there already. His views are wildly out of touch with those of his constituency.
This is going to be one hell of a race. Some obvious politics at play, not endorsing your own. Hard to understand Rep Hubbard has not voted with the views of the 63rd and the 6th sits in the middle.
I applaud Rodney Hubbard! I would be so proud to have him elected! He has done a great job thus far in Jeff City and I know he will do further good in the future.
I have to comment on Gaydem’s comments. Hubbard is not just going to vote with his party because that is what the rest of them are doing. That is what is so great about him. He votes with what he feels is right, not follow the herd.
The only bill I really followed was HB 808….which I agree with wholeheartedly. Children, especially lower income children (or this year…special needs children) deserve the chance to attend stellar schools like the other children in Missouri. St. Louis schools are not all performing up to par, why should we force the kids to stay there. And secondly, the bill was based on a tax credit, not a voucher, so it would be funded by private donors (who would then get a tax credit) but the money would not be coming directly out of the state budget. Your comment is misleading and I wanted to correct that issue. Competition is a very strong force and it works.
Go Hubbard!
Ah, Angel. You wave those pom-poms, girl, in your role as the obligatory school vouchers cheerleader!
Go progressives! (and I still maintain that Mr. Hubbard is wanting in this area).
Rodney Hubbard has shown that he has the backbone to do what needs to be done whether or not it is without opposition.
What is gaydem looking for in the next senator from the 5th?
Somebody who always does what they are told, or somebody who has a vision to move above and beyond party politics and try to improve life for the *people* in the district (not just the NEA)?
Gaydem - show us where HB808 sent ANY tax dollars to ANY private school - it didn’t. You are repeating not only a lie but a damn lie. A lie that shows why SLPS is is such poor shape. The teacher’s union cannot even be trusted to tell the truth - how can the teachers’ union be trusted to educate children? They can’t.
If you read HB808 - several millions of tax credit dollars were to be granted for donations to PUBLIC SCHOOL FOUNDATIONS. Tax credit dollars are based on someone spending their OWN dollars and then getting to “write a portion, not even all of it off”.
As was oft repeated during HB808 debate - the money in our pockets does not belong to the state - it belongs to us until we surrender it. Perhaps all the tax credits going to St. Louis City should be rescinded since the rest of the state is underwriting the city with “tax dollars” according to your definition. After all - those tax credits are taking away money from public schools - again according to your definition.
Of course your defintion is wrong on every level.
JasonB you sound very angry. This is a free country and people are expressing their opinions on this blog. Opinions are rectums, everbody has one. If it wasn’t for the opposing opinion, you would not have any reason to express your opinion.
Everybody knows that Rep. Hubbard strongly supported Lewis Reed for President of the Board of Alderman, and Alderman Kacie Triplett is now a member of that group who are funded by Republicans. Money is a hell of drug!
This group of Republicrats (Republicans in Democratic clothing)are not use to receiving this much money for being loyal to a party. The Democratic Party did not give these individuals everflowing dollars, but Republicans are in exchange for a vote in the favor of Republican principles. For example, the elimination of campaign contribution limits.
Unfortunately, the Democrats are afraid to do anything or better yet say anything. The Chairman of the State Democratic Party John Temporiti has been quiet, the Executive Director Ken Franklin has been quiet, the Secretary of State Robin Carnahan has been quiet, and all the Democratic leaders have been quiet as Republican money has funded a group of Republicratic candidates to destroy any candidate standing up for Democratic principles in the August 5, 2008 primary.
However, credit must be given to Attorney General candidate Jeff Harris for calling out Chris Koster as an IMPOSTER (ADVERTISED ON THIS WEBSITE, JEFF HARRIS IS NOT AFRAID!!!!!
Gaydem’s statement was presented as a matter of fact not opinion. Gaydem is wrong.
I also understand your point about your party’s disdain for those who don’t go along with the party line even if the party line is wrong. I’ve watched it happen for well over two decades in Jefferson City.
It wasn’t as bad in the old days when the dem margins were large but as they got closer and closer it became more and more the routine to “punish” “errant” members. So Hubbard takes a stand that is best for his constituents but doesn’t square up with the union special interests running the dem party and thus he is a “republicrat”. Good for him. Need more like him.
Jason: If the definition of a tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in the tax payment required from a person, then perhaps the wording of my statement is mis-leading, however, the essence of that legislation remains that potential tax dollars are being diverted from the public coffers to support public education and are instead being directed to private education. Parse it any way you want, that is in no way a progressive stance.
