Mo GOP Washingon delegation blasts Steelman’s anti-Hulshof ad

As my colleague Tony Messenger blogged earlier, state Treasurer Sarah Steelman has launched a tough ad against fellow Republican Kenny Hulshof, a congressman from Columbia, over the spending bills he’s supported in the U.S. House.

This afternoon, Missouri’s five other Republicans in Washington came to Hulshof’s defense. Here’s the joint statement from U.S. Senator Christopher “Kit” Bond, and U.S. Reps. Todd Akin, Roy Blunt, Sam Graves and Jo Ann Emerson:

“It is disappointing that our fellow Republican, Sarah Steelman, would attack the good work of Missouri’s Republican representatives in Washington, D.C.  It is not helpful to take votes out of context, distort interest group ratings and cast aspersions on our motives at a time when we, along with Kenny Hulshof, are doing everything possible to thwart the extreme agendas of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.

“Here are the facts.  Kenny Hulshof has a 95% rating from the Americans for Tax Reform, a 95% lifetime rating from the US Chamber of Commerce, a 94% rating from Eagle Forum and an 89% lifetime rating from the American Conservative Union.  Suggesting that Kenny Hulshof is anything but an effective and committed conservative leader is wrong, misleading and a disservice to voters.

“The people of Missouri deserve better.”

Steelman spokesman Spence Jackson replied that she’s standing by the ad that he said targets Hulshof’s “wasteful, pork barrel spending.”

Well this decides my vote for now. If Sarah Steelman run as an Independent for Governor of Missouri, I would vote for her. Under no circumstance would I vote for a Republican in this day and atmosphere that we are now in, I don’t agree with their politics, but I trust Sarah Steelman and know that she would do what is right and fair in most of her dealings.

I think that Sarah Steelman should run as an Independent. She has no chance as an Republican, and she is worthy.

Underwise, I am voting for Jeff Harris.

Sarah Steelman has a point, there’s been way too much spending in Washington. The 2006 election seems to bear this out, and 2008 will probably see more of these BIG spenders coming home and deservedly so. The LAST thing Missouri needs is a Governor that has been a part of this free spending congress. During Hulsof’s time in congress we’ve seen more spending and an increase in the intrusiveness of the Fedral Government into our lives. Hardly, a record we need to see repeated in Jefferson City.

I hate to be picky because I a fan of your comments but I think you mean Jay Nixon not Jeff Harris. Vote for Jeff Harris for attorney general. I am.

This just proves my point from yesterday that Sarah needs to get out of this race. She hasn’t put forth any substantive ideas to help our state and all we keep seeing from her are either attacks on Kenny or defense of her shoddy campaign and their many foul ups. I truly want to get behind her, but she just keeps making that tougher and tougher. Maybe in a few years, after she had actually accomplished something for our state she’ll come back and try again. I just hope she doesn’t continue attempting to tear our party apart in the mean time.

Does anyone else find it ironic that the guy running Sarah Steelman’s campaign is also the guy running Sam Graves’ campaign? Not that that would typically pose any problems, but with Sam coming out against Sarah in the article above it would seem to be that there is some dissension out there on the other side of the state.

Sarah has apparently driven the Republican establishment crazy by pointing out that the annoited one, Hulshof, is wearing no clothes to cover his immodest record of earmarks and big spending. As if in the grip of irrestibile impulse Bond, Graves, Emerson, Blunt et al are defending the indefensible- what kind of leader votes for a bridge to nowhere- the answer is Republican Establishment leaders, that’s who.

Rhonda: I seem to have missed all of Kenny’s accomplishments that lowered taxes or got the Feds out of our lives, perhaps you can list a few. As to Sarah Steelman, well didn’t she bring State of Missouri money back to Missouri? How about getting Missouri money out of firms that do business with terrorists? And then there’s Kenny quoting a conversation with Franklin Delano Bush as to why he decided to run for Governor, but no ads with Franklin Delano Bush, yet. We really don’t need to bring the DC culture to Jefferson City.

It would be nice to hear Steelman’s vision for Missouri rather than just attacking her opponent. Everyone seems to forget the Republicans are in the minority in Washington. If she has all these accomplishments she would be better served to point these out rather than tearing down her own party.

I’ve had it with Steelman. When this race started out, I was in Kenny’s corner (and still am). However, after the primary, I was perfectly happy to throw Steelman my support and my vote.

No longer. I’ve been around the 9th for 2 or 3 congressional races. Not only in those, but in the ones before, not even the Democrats tried to drag Kenny through the mud like this (and I expect that to happen between the parties somewhat). She isn’t getting my vote in November if she’s the nominee. I’ll vote Libertarian instead.

So, good luck, Sarah. You’re turning off a lot of the people you’ll need if you actually win in August.

I must have missed something, wasn’t there an election in 1994 that put the Republicans in control of the House? When Franklin Delano Bush took office, which party controlled the House and Senate? With control of the White House, Senate and House, what did they actually accomplish? They’re like “the gang that couldn’t shoot straight”, why would you want to turn over the Governorship to one of those guys. Take some time listen to what Sarah Steelman has been saying, Sarah Steelman has a very clear vision for Missouri.
