Obama jab over McCain’s anti-flood project vote snags McCaskill

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Sen. Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, has poked at his Republican rival, Sen. John McCain, over the latter’s vote against The Water Resources Development Act Of 2007.

But McCain’s campaign says the jab also hits one of Obama’s biggest boosters, Sen. Claire McCaskill, because she also voted against the bill.

Obama’s comments against his rival came as he and McCain each separately toured parts of flooded Iowa.

According to an Associated Press account of Obama’s comment (since we weren’t there to hear it ourselves):

” ‘I know that Sen. McCain felt as strongly as I did,’ Obama said, ‘feeling enormous sympathy for the victims of the recent flooding. I’m sure they appreciated the sentiment, but they probably would have appreciated it even more if Sen. McCain hadn’t opposed legislation to fund levees and flood control programs, which he considers pork.’ “

At the time, McCain and McCaskill voted against the bill because of their continued opposition to earmarks, in which legislators earmark allocations for specific projects, without an up or down vote on the projects. Both senators say earmarks subvert the process, and result in too many pork-barrel projects getting funding.

As the AP story notes, the bill was overwhelmingly approved by Congress, which later overrode President George W. Bush’s veto.

McCain and McCaskill voted to give the levees top priority. When the levees are stuffed in a bill with thousands of projects they don’t get top priorty. A museum in mississippi was part of that bill. Why should a museum in mississippi get the same priority. The money never gets appropriated when so many projects are appropriated at the same time.

McCain, Feingold and McCaskill all wanted to give the levees top priority so the money would get there.

For Obama to take this vote out of context at this time when people are suffering is a disgrace.

Obama is the one who wanted the levees to have the same priority as a museum in mississippi.

Wow, yet another dishonest misrepresentation aka. lie by Senator Obama. If he thinks that an endless stream of lies is “new politics” his knowledge of history is seriously deficient.

“The money never gets appropriated when so many projects are appropriated at the same time.”

What an absurd statement. If something is appropriated, it’s appropriated. Priority has nothing to do with it.

When Congress earmarks appropriations, it directs money to spent for a specific project, not to be left up to the whims of unelected bureaucrats in the executive branch. Obama is absolutely correct on the issue.

Stan - If it were the case that “unelected bureaucrats in the executive branch” were a bunch of nitwits who doled out money as favors, you (and Obama) would be right. But that isn’t how it works. These “unelected bureaucrats” are people whose job it is to identify areas of need, and to make decisions on where money can best be spent. I’d sooner trust the unelected bureaucrats at the Corps of Engineers than Senator Obama to decide where we need a levee. I’d sooner trust the unelected bureaucrats at MoDOT than Senator Obama to decide which bridges need to be repaired. I’d sooner trust the unelected bureaucrats at the FAA than Senator Obama to decide which airport needs a new radar system. It’s funny, Stan, for a supporter of the most liberal candidate for President since McGovern, you have an awfully negative attitude about government employees.

Oh Nicki, do not fear change dear girl! Your repub party is the king of rolling up pork complete with pickles and cream cheese. God, I never did like that “dish”. What a bizarre combination. Perhaps getting someone in office who wants CHANGE would get rid of all those roll-ups of bad with good. After all Nicki honey, Obama didn’t invent that stuff. That was one of YOUR guys. You know, the pale males! LMAO Wait until you see when we roll out the info about where GB hid all those budget items. Seems he figured no one would find his pork if he put it where it had never been put before. Then he wants to hide the papers and not let anyone see them. Will be interesting to see how much he shredded before we gain control of his dungeons again. Yes Nicki sweets…all thet is political traditon comes from YOUR peoples…the only ones who have been at the top so far.

Nick, you are a trip. Fox News shill here at the PD now. Excuse me if I don’t stand when you enter the room. Have you not noticed Obama is surrounding himself with advisors of all political stripes and opinions? Well, get that greasy head out of your butt and check it out! More folks will get input into his administration than you have ever seen before. To say Obama will be planning the things you mention is silly, and your comments show you are ignorant of his method of governance. Expect great things. Better than you’ve seen for the past seven odd years, that’s for sure.

To stan, my bad the money in these bills aren’t appropriated. The bills pass and then it is up to burocrats to appropriate the money. So if the bills are stuffed with thousands of projects of pork the money never gets to the vital projects. When you have a bill stuffed with thousands of projects the vital projects never get the money. McCaskill and McCain were for the levees getting top priority. Obama is wrong on this. Obama is for continuing the broken system where vital projects don’t get funded and spending on pork. A museum in mississippi shouldn’t be given the same priority as a the levees. Obama was for the mississippi museum getting the same priority with the burocrats who appropriate the money after the bill is passed. McCaskill and McCain were for vital projects like the iowa levee getting the top priotity. It is because of this broken system money doesn’t get to the vital projects. The everglades were also in this bill but haven’t had the money appropriated to them yet. But you guessed it the museum in mississippi got the money. But it seems like Obama’s campaign is working. He is way up in the polls. People believe whatever he says.

Looks like there is plenty of blame to share by everyone. I can understand the earmark stance, but someone needed to submit a separate bill, including all senators/representatives with states in the impacted area.

Actually, no I havent. Can you point out his pro-life advisor? His acolytes (advisors as you call them) all fall in line with his opinions. They are the ones you see on TV explaining away all his switched positions.

Yet another lie from Obama’s glassy-eyed followers. His advisors, like Mr. Obama, are a pack of left-wing ideologues.

Don’t you repub shills ever listen to anything but Fox News? You expect Obama supporters to do your research for you, then you come here and complain because this media is not reporting the lies Fox News does. You are white men fearful of change. It really rocks your world that a black man is doing much better than you are in life, and that he is popular. He has folks behind him that are not pushovers for propaganda, yet you are attempting to be dismissive of them.

Get over it dudes of conservatism and bias, your playing field is leveling and it scares your incompetent butts to death! No matter how the repubs rip you off and break laws, you still defend them. So why aren’t you big, strong repub pale males fighting that war instead of your young women? HMMM??? I’ve been over twice, and your kind is not there! Hope the draft hits you big time if your boy gets in. Silly kids.

Pork can’t be blamed on one gov-ment rep, so this isn’t even an issue that hits any one party. The iraq war is the biggest piece of pork going. Yet you want to put in a guy who wants to pork you even more. How smart are YOU? Again, go fight you cowards and see if it doesn’t change your mind about how status quo is going.

Are you kidding me? Do you know how many times McCain has flip-flopped? The Carpetbagger Report has documented 48 McCain flip-flops. Here are just a few:

http://www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com/archives/15924.html

* McCain supported the drilling moratorium; now he’s against it.

* McCain strongly opposes a windfall-tax on oil company profits. Three weeks earlier, he was perfectly comfortable with the idea.

* McCain thought Bush’s warrantless-wiretap program circumvented the law; now he believes the opposite.

* McCain defended “privatizing” Social Security. Now he says he’s against privatization (though he actually still supports it.)

* McCain wanted to change the Republican Party platform to protect abortion rights in cases of rape and incest. Now he doesn’t.

* McCain thought the estate tax was perfectly fair. Now he believes the opposite.

* He opposed indefinite detention of terrorist suspects. When the Supreme Court reached the same conclusion, he called it “one of the worst decisions in the history of this country.”

* McCain said he would “not impose a litmus test on any nominee.” He used to promise the opposite.

* McCain believes the telecoms should be forced to explain their role in the administration’s warrantless surveillance program as a condition for retroactive immunity. He used to believe the opposite.

* McCain said in 2005 that he opposed the tax cuts because they were “too tilted to the wealthy.” By 2007, he denied ever having said this, and insisted he opposed the cuts because of increased government spending.

* McCain supported a major campaign-finance reform measure that bore his name. In June 2007, he abandoned his own legislation.

Let’s not forget the *Triple Axle Flip*:

“Our nation’s immigration system is broken. And without comprehensive immigration reform, our nation’s security will remain vulnerable. That is why we must act.”
– John McCain, 2006

“I understand why you would call it a, quote, shift,” McCain told reporters Saturday … “I say it is a lesson learned about what the American people’s priorities are. And their priority is to secure the borders.”
– John McCain, Nov, 2007

“[W]e must enact comprehensive immigration reform. We must make it a top agenda item.” McCain went on to take an anti-deportation position on immigrants already in the U.S. who entered the country illegally.

Once again Obama doesn’t tell people the whole truth. More and more people are seeing through Obama. Notice MCCAIN beat him in fundraising in May, The next months will be even better for MCCAIN. MCCAIN is a tested leader, Obama is just a speaker who gets alot of his speeches from other people. That is why Hillary Supporters by the MILLIONS are backing John McCain. Go to http://www.hcsfjm.com and see. That is just one of a vast number of Democratic web sites that are now backing MCCAIN. Obama is what Rev Wright said, a politican who is saying what he has to to get elected. He says he’ll meet with the Pres of Iran but he can’t even go on The O’Reilly Factor. He won’t even face the American people in more than one townhall debate. Don’t we deserve answers to our questions? Obama thinks he can play the race card and get elected, but it is not going to work. He switches his views by the polls, and people can see he doesn’t even know what he stands for. I honestly do not know how the Senator from MO can even back him because he is far from experienced enough to be President. I don’t think that looks very good for her judgement. How can any American back someone for the Presidency of the United States when they have the type of associations Obama has. The Democrats who supported Hillary and have now left the Democratic Party made a choice, It was either party or country first. They chose COUNTRY FIRST…I hope other Americans will take a GOOD look at Obama and do the same…COUNTRY FIRST..VOTE MCCAIN. Read as much as you can and find out the FACTS because now that Obama is limiting press access you sure won’t be able to find out things in the media.

usaproud, your comments are sooo hilarious (not to mention totally fallible that I’m certain that you’ve been brainwashed by Rush Limbaugh, or never completed your 8th grade debate class. You sound like all the other folks who’ve been tricked into believing that some how Obama is not American enough, or that Clinton supporters would switch to McCain. Are you kidding me? No Clinton supporter in their right mind would vote for McCain. McCain’s polices on the war, education, the economy and domestic issues are the exact opposite, of HRC and BO. Not only that, but Clinton has endorsed BO, and is campaigning for him. Obama is as AMERICAN as you get in this country! He embodies everything that this COUNTRY is about. His background is the ideal example of everything good that this country was founded upon. You also mentioned that somehow OB is playing the race card, but you never back up your claim. The white one, or the black one? BO is a man of two racial backgrounds, so if he wanted to play a race card, he could play either one he wanted because he is as much a man of European roots as a man of African decedents. The facts are that Obama’s campaign is based on his high level of education, main street experience in Chicago, legislative achievements in the IL State House, leadership in the US Senate, and more over, a uncanny ability to gain the support of highly educated and motivated young people, and moderates of all walks of life, who are tired as hell of brainwashed people like you.

Now, in all fairness to the earmark and flood debate, I will say that BO is wrong, but that does not make him unable to be our President. No one is perfect. I think you’ll see that in the next few days he’ll have to do some patch work on this one.

Yet another lie from Barak Obama’s glassy-eyed supporters. If it was Condoleeza Rice, I’d be supporting her. If it was J.C. Watts, I’d be supporting him. It isn’t that he’s a black man, it’s that he’s a narrow-minded left-wing ideologue who gives a good enough speech that he has a throng of zombies following him everywhere he goes.

Nick,

You would not be supporting J.C. Watts because he would speak some painful truths, the you would accuse him also of being extreme and un-American.

When pressed Condolezza Rice speak some ugly truths concerning racism in America. She is not as stupid to these truths as would please one’s like yourself.

When everyone thought that Colin Powers was a blind fool also, you guys thought that he would make a great President, remember?

Not anymore, do you? He saw much ugly and got swept up with it and did not like it one bit and removed himself from the evil that he witnessed.

By the way, I think that Republican, Colin Powers supports Obama for the Presidency. Is he now considered a traitor to America, in your distorted minds?

How nice of Barack to take a time of despair for many threatened by flooding and turn it into a political stab at his opponent.

For the record, not another levee should ever be built on the Mississippi. Every levee built leads to higher water/floods in other areas. For the life of me I can’t believe we think we can completely control that river.

D. Walker, Colin Powers(whoever that is) can vote however the hell he likes and I won’t think anything more/less of him.

Just stumbled into this discussion board and likely will block same from this day forward. Imitation Intellectual Discussion aside this seems to be a gathering of 9th grade braggarts and bullys intent on getting one up on the other.
How American is it that you cannot focus on the issues but instead focus on missteps and misquotes? Name calling? Is this a bar fight who’s participants are a bunch of girls? Grow up. The enemy is at the gates not the citizen next to you.
Show some moral and intellectual fiber and restrict your comments to the realities of real life politics. The issues are bigger than petty name calling and one-ups-menship. Ask probing questions of the candidates not degrade the opposition supporters - unless that is your assigned task from your particular candidate.
I feel saddened for America and sorry for you - but this country will go on with or without you and your tawdry comments.
Grow up.
