Rep. Blunt boasts roasts, while Hulshof sees red
Jake Wagman
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

U.S. Rep. Roy Blunt’s day job is tallying votes, but he’s found a side gig counting beans — or, at least, brewing them.

Financial disclosure forms for Blunt, the minority whip, and other lawmakers were released yesterday, showing how the legislators draw income outside of their Congressional paychecks.

Among the more unusual ones was Blunt, who owns a stake in Churchill Coffee Co., based in his hometown of Springfield. (And “proudly” served in his Capitol Hill office, according to the AP.)

A visit to Churchill’s website finds an array of specialty joes and other offerings, from free-trade coffee to tea leaves grown in Taiwan. It’s also where Blunt’s oldest son — current Gov. Matt Blunt — worked before he was elected to statewide office, and is apparently popular with state employees, as well.

U.S. Rep. Kenny Hulshof — a colleague of father Blunt who is hoping to replace the son in Jefferson City — has found a liquid niche, too. The Post-Dispatch Washington bureau’s Deirdre Shesgreen found that Hulshof, lawyer by trade and farmer by family, is sniffing around the wine business.

Hulsohf, Shesgreen reports, bought the rights to become a wholesaler for a small Napa Valley winery. He’s even got his own label: Bingham Road Cellars, named after the street he lives on in Columbia.

So even if 2008 is not a good year politically for Hulshof, he’ll still have his Cabernet.
