State Rep. Jeff Harris, D-Columbia and a candidate for Missouri attorney general, just announced that he’s received the endorsement of  Unite Here!

Unite Here! represents the employees in the industrial, textile, hotel, and restaurant workforce and the union of needletrades.

Said Unite Here! International Vice-President and State Director Tim Luebbert in a statement: “Jeff has shown the strongest vision to protect Missouri workers and the convictions to do the right thing.  I have no doubt in my mind that Jeff will be there to help Missouri families when we need him the most….”

Said Harris in that same release: “I am excited to have the support of another statewide labor organization. Our campaign continues to gain more momentum with every passing day and now with 12 labor endorsements, consisting of over 100,000 members, it is clear that our campaign is the strongest in this race.”

Harris noted that he has ”previously been endorsed by other statewide labor organizations including, AFSCME (American Federal, State, County, and Municipal Employees), the United Transportation Union, the Missouri State Association of the National Association of Letter Carriers, and the International Association of Machinists State Council and from other labor organizations including the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Locals 53 & 257, Sheet Metal Workers Local 36, Operating Engineers Local 148 & 513, Boilermakers Local 27, and Firefighters Local 1055.”

Another big endorsement for Harris. Heard he had a strong showing at the bar association debate last week too, and he also got the CCP in Kansas City.

However … The Kansas City Star’s reporter, who was at the KC debate, declared Chris Koster the winner (KC Star, Sunday, May 25):

“The three Democratic contenders for Missouri attorney general squared off Thursday at UMKC.

“The winner? Chris Koster, the state senator from Harrisonville who switched parties last year. The former Cass County prosecutor displayed a depth of knowledge and a commanding rhetorical style.”

Koster is unquestionably the most impressive speaker of the three Democrats (I don’t count the unseen woman candidate from KC). He is also the tallest. Donnelly, I believe, is the next tallest.

Maybe it’s me, but I’d rather have the votes of the members of UNITE and the CCP than one reporter’s any day of the week. Sour grapes, Katie?

Funny you should mention the “unseen woman candidate for KC.” Isn’t she the one Koster put in the race?

I was at the debate. There is no way Koster won it. I don’t think Democrats will vote for someone who voted with Matt Blunt on nearly every major issue including kicking 100,000 off health care, allowing unlimited campaign contributions, photo id, the foundation formula, MOHELA, and banning the teaching of sex education in the schools. I also don’t think democrats will support someone who supported Bush, Ashcroft and Graves. That picture of Koster with Cheney that Koster got busted trying to remove from his web site will haunt him.

Its hard to say Kraske (the KC Star reporting) is the most unbiased KC reporter. There have been plenty of other reporters calling Harris the winner of the debate. Most people I’ve talked to who were at the debate haven’t agreed with Kraske’s conclusion. And apparently the members of the CCP felt Harris was the best choice. Donnelly is a great legislator, but Harris will be a great AG.
