Anybody home? Mystery candidate does robo-calls
Emily Jo Pierce is part of a crowded field of Democrats running for the State House seat that covers the area around Tower Grove Park.
Or, at least, her name is on the ballot.
Pierce has no lawns signs, campaign buttons or even an official campaign committee.
Her name is not on the mailbox of the Arsenal Street apartment she put down as her address when she filed.
Leaders of the ward organizations and neighborhood associations –who have been inundated with requests for endorsements from other candidates — have not met her.
This week, though, they did get a chance to hear from her.
On Tuesday, Pierce placed a round of automated calls to voters in the 67th District, emphasizing her position on abortion rights.
“We should be committed to electing a pro-choice woman like Emily Jo Pierce to the State Legislature,” the recording said. “Emily Jo Pierce is the best candidate to represent us in Jefferson City. Remember: Emily Jo Pierce for state representative. When women vote, women win.”
It’s a curious pitch, because Pierce does not have NARAL’s backing in this race — and it’s not because they were stingy with their support. The pro-choice group is already endorsing three candidates in the primary.
An automated phone call also feels a tad out of place for a candidate who has made no other attempts to gain visibility, and not submitted any campaign-spending forms.
Further raising suspicion that Pierce is a spoiler rather than a genuine contender is that the automated call does not say who paid for it, or leave a number for more information.
I’d ask Pierce myself — but I’d have to find her first.

I find it interesting that candidates such as Miss Pierce support a practice that is not in the best interest of women. Millions of young girls have died and all it does is bring a smile to the faces of politicians like Miss Pierce. Maybe that is why she is in hiding.
I got the call too. There’s only one candidate who this helps and that’s Colona. I’m sure his gurus will be here soon denying it, blaming it on others and trying to explain that if it was him it would have to appear on his campaign finance report. My guess is that it was done by a private individual at the direction of the Colona campaign.
With tactics like this Colona will be a perfect fit in Jeff City, as a Republicrat. He’s already joining forces with them. Check out his praise for fellow Republicrats Hubbard and Smith: http://think.mtv.com/044FDFFFF00989E1200170098F253/
NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri does not endorse Emily Jo Pierce. Like your reporter, we have never heard of Ms. Pierce. The pro-choice woman in this race is Joan Landmann, who was NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri’s volunteer of the year in 2006 and who serves on the Board of Directors of NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri Foundation. Two of Joan’s opponents, Mike Colona and Chad Beffa, also are pro-choice, but self-evidently are not women. Landmann, Colona, and Beffa have earned the right to proclaim themselves pro-choice candidates in the eyes of our organization; NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri endorsed them. Ms. Pierce may indeed be pro-choice, but she is hardly a viable candidate, and she lacks any official pro-choice imprimatur for her candidacy.

Think, this “practice” is the safest surgical procedure because it is highly regulated, so I highly doubt that millions of young girls have died because of it. If you were to look at the history of abortion, before it was legalized by the U.S. Supreme Court, you will read about all the self induced abortions that left women sterile or killed them due to infection. So, as a woman, I would prefer a legal, highly regulated practice over an illegal, highly unsafe practice.
The key to reducing the number of abortions is for parents/family to discuss pregnancy with their children–regardless of gender–to erase the myths that teenagers will hear from each other when discussing sex.
“When women vote, women win” is EMILY’s List’s slogan. They certainly haven’t endorsed her either. Wonder if they realize she’s trying to steal some of their credibility, too.
Sorry “Dem Voter” (or Colona staff person), “she (Emily Jo Pearce)” didn’t do it. You did.
I guess now rather than deny doing it we’ll try and derail the comments into a fight over abortion rights or how the MIA Emily Jo Pearce is stealing slogans.
You guys are good, real good.
PS How many times did Colona use the “F” word in the above clip. I also liked how he said some people think Jeff Smith looks Jewish and should run in U. City. Those are nice touches for someone running for public office.
Wow…did we watch the same clip?
Are you from STL? I think the comment about Jeff Smith was pointing out how some St. Louisans tend to stereotype individuals…the whole “where did you go to high school thing”…and how individuals should break out of that ignorant mindset. Being born in South St. Louis, moving to Webster Groves during my teen years, going to college in Columbia, MO and making the circle back to South St. Louis, I can tell you, I have lived thru the ignorance of “where did you go to high school”. If you are a born-and-raised St. Louisan, may I suggest you view the clip again? Really listen this time and don’t just try to pick out a propagandist phrase.
Southsidegirl
What he meant is understandable. How he said it is unacceptable, along with the usage of the “F” word. If this is how he handles conversation with the national media imagine what will fly in Jeff City with no taped media coverage.
People, watch it for yourself. IMO it’s bad.
Wherever the money for the robo-calling came from we won’t find out until after the election. The date of the robo-calls conveniently fell just after the reporting period for the most recent cycle before electon day. The cost would then be reported by the Campaign (Emily does not have a registered Committee of Campaign Committee however.) in its next disclosure and the prior period updated. That does not seem to be just lucky, and I don’t think Pierce could have figured that out herself. Looks like we have just received a Rovian “October Surprise” from Colona or his purchasers. I wonder if Colona’s disclosure will indicate that his paid advisors helped Emily Jo out?
All indicators point to Colona (or the Colona Camp) having put Emily Jo in the race. Encouraging someone to run does not run afoul of Missouri ethics rules and would not get one into trouble with the Sec. of State. However, if something had been given to her in exchange for putting her name on the ballot, now we are talking about a real issue. It is true Emily Jo does not live at her given address on Arsenal, nor has she ever. But she does work at a jazz club near the Fox and SLU. She probably can be found there. Why not just ask her. With all due respect to Ms. Pierce, she probably does not even realize the extent of what she has gotten herself into. If Colona did it, though, he surely understands. … there have also been complaints from all three other candidates that their yard signs have not only been stolen but that the people who put the yard signs up have been badgered by Colona supports and even Colona himself both in person and on the phone. I talked to all three candidates the other night at the 15th Ward block captns debate. … Colona has made a mockery of our political system, but with all the money he raised (check out where a lot of it came from! you might be surprised) he was able to put out numerous mailers and with all of the BS, unfortunately too few voters have been able to see behind the scenes. … Somebody should report him to the Sec. of State; after an investigation, he would be lucky to avoid jail time.
