As mayor, slain firefighter’s father sought unity

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Flags are at half-staff in Maplewood today, where this morning a rookie firefighter was felled by a bullet while responding to an early-morning vehicle fire near Big Bend Boulevard.Ryan Hummert

The firefighter was Ryan Hummert, 22, whose father was mayor of Maplewood for a decade.

When Andrew Hummert was elected mayor of Maplewood in 1983, it was a sleepy bedroom community with a reputation for raucous council meetings.

During his tenure, Hummert sought to bring political harmony to the town, as well as renewed economic development.

Today, Maplewood is better known for its trendy Main Street than City Hall infighting.

But any calm there was shattered today, where a gunman — with, so far, no identity and no reason — shot Hummert’s son and two police officers.

Young Hummert had just begun to follow his dad’s path into public service — he had been with the city since last summer, after completing paramedic school.

He graduated from the St. Louis County fire academy earlier this year.

It is beyond expression to contemplate
a young man,
young men
who train and serve, work as a team
to face danger, strictly to apply themselves
to help save
those of their community,
and then to be shot…
as if in the back,
by someone who fully knows
the intent was to help.

Our prayers are with Andy, Jackie, and the rest of the family. Former Fenton neighbors, we have been in Alabama for just over 2 years. It is a true tragedy for a young life to be taken so meaninglessly.

ANOTHER SENSELESS AND HORRIFYING TRAGEDY INVOLVING OUR PUBLIC SERVICE WORKERS…. IT IS ALMOST BECOMING “USUAL” ON OUR LOCAL T.V. STATIONS,
SEEING OUR POLICEMEN AND FIREMEN DIE RIGHT IN FRONT OF US…. ALL GOVERNMENT
NEEDS TO BAN THE “GUN LAW”. ESPECIALLY IN ST. LOUIS. WE ARE ALREADY WELL KNOWN FOR OUR HIGHER THAN AVERAGE HOMICIDE RATE. HOW MANY MORE SHOOTINGS LIKE THIS HAVE TO HAPPEN BEFORE WE GET TOGETHER AS A CITY, AND SERIOUSLY DO SOMETHING ABOUT GUN CONTROL????? PRAYERS AND MORE PRAYERS FOR THIS FAMILY’S HORRIBLE LOSS.

I (Casey) went on to the St. Louis Post Dispatch like any other Monday to check on the Cardinals (I live in Florida but grew up in Maplewood) and saw the news about the ambush first thing. I couldn’t believe what I was reading. A handfull of friends/former classmates left messages at my home to tell me and I called around trying to find out how Jackie and Andy were doing. My heart is broken for the family’s loss. I wish I could be there to help comfort you — please know that you will remain in my thoughts and prayers as you try to cope with this tragedy. All my love, Casey Barton.
