Dem candidate returns Koster contribution

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Dr. Vernon (Doc) Harlan, a Democrat running for the 71st District state House seat in the Aug. 5 primary, says that he has returned a $300 donation to his campaign from state Sen. Chris Koster, D-Harrisonville and a St. Louis native who’s running for attorney general.

Harlan cites “the recent revelation that aides to…Koster have been connected to laundering of political funds..”

Harlan was referring to reports, initially by the Associated Press’ David Lieb, that a Koster aide had delivered checks from an independent pro-Democrat campaign committee — the Economic Growth Council — to a representative for a legislative committee. That person then gave a donation from the legislative committee to the Koster aide.

Koster’s critics contend that action violated state campaign law, which bars donors from dictating to legislative committees which candidates get the money.

(The Post-Dispatch ran a detailed story, days before Lieb’s account, about how the committee pass-through system works. We also reported that Koster had benefited the most, percentage-wise, from the practice.)

Koster says no illegal activity took place, and that he has regularly sought guidance from the Ethics Commission. Critics have filed complaints with the commission, which is expected to act after the primary. Commission officials have otherwise declined comment.

In any case, Harlan says he “is also calling on other candidates to avoid any appearance of condoning or benefitting from unethical behavior by returning funds from Koster and his publically discredited Economic Growth Council.”

“I am deeply saddened by Mr. Koster’s decision to circumvent campaign laws by using the Economic Growth Council to access and control hundreds of thousands of laundered dollars,” Harlan said in a statement. “This is especially troubling when done by the man who aspires to be our state’s top justice official. Koster’s actions convey the message that the law is only for the rest of us, not for him and those he supports…”

The people complaining about Koster’s contributions are only jealous that he has raised more money than they have.

Chris Koster is the most likely Democrat to win statewide in November, and the only Democrat with the prosecutorial experience to be the state’s next Attorney General.

The people defending Koster’s alleged lawbreaking continue to refuse to answer any questions or to even stick to the facts. They just offer the same tired “blame the other guy” mallarky over and over again.

Sorry boys, but it appears that your pal Koster broke the law. Hard to believe considering he was such a stellar prosecutor. At least that’s what you used to keep saying all the time.

Chris Koster = Bill Webster

Jessica,
This may be “splitting hairs”…. but my intention has not been to “attack’ Chris.. to me, this term has an aggressive meaning. Having personal maters brought into public is distasteful to me and I have avoided it. I guess that being married to a public figure makes some things fair game though. Going though my experience with Chris was unpleasant enough and to read and hear things that are often incorrect is even more unpleasant. I hope to be able to respond and share what I believe to be true. I identify myself when I respond..most comments are not coming from me. There are even negative ones with which I do not agree. I feel the kosterkickedyourpuppy site is unproductive and yes, “attacking” I wish it had more factual info. Maybe it’s just a way people have chosen to express the hurt and anger they feel where he is concerned…maybe it’s just someone who supports his opponent.
It should come as no surprise that I agree with your assessment of Chris. You say you have come to you opinions through analysis. No matter who one chooses in the end, gathering and objectively analyzing information from ALL sides is (I feel) the best way to choose a candidate. Nice work.
Most importantly and on topic..how nice to see a politician standing up for his principles and also putting his money where his mouth is..I don’t care who it involves..it’s refreshing.

Milcy COnsulting. Who are they and why do they both work for Economic Growth Council and Kosters campaign? When is Jay Nixon going to throw Chuck Hatfield and Chris Koster under the bus? WHo is Aaron Washburn?

Why is everyone getting an attorney?

R,

My comments that mentioned you were inappropriate. Sometimes when you feel strongly about something you go overboard. In going overboard I think I at least created the appearance that I was using you to help Jeff. What I did was uncalled for. I just got a pretty blunt e-mail from a good friend of Jeffs saying the comments were inappropriate. Actually he said worse. I just can’t repeat it or Jo will delete my comment. I am very sorry.

You’re right David, we’re also so jealous of Koster’s Republican money because Harris only has a double digit lead. Oh, and by the way, Koster’s prosecutorial experience isn’t the most important factor for being AG. I know this isn’t new for most people, but Koster’s supporters, and Koster himself, can’t seem get to understand it.

Thank you Jessica. An apology is certainly not necessary where I am concerned. For the record, I have contributed to two people running against Chris (Harris and Donnelly) I don’t know enough about either one to make a choice between the two. They seem like good intelligent people. Either would do well in the job and both are longtime Democrats. I ACT ON NEITHER CANDIDATE’S BEHALF AND AM NOT TRYING TO MAKE AN ENDORSEMENT. An endorsement from me would most likely do neither one of them any good. I realize I am one of the best and worst people to talk about Chris. I was married to him so I obviously have plenty of experience but anything I may say can make me look like the nutty scorned ex. The only reason I even post repsonses on the blogs is because others have already commented about me. I believe my family and I are responsible for a large portion of Chris’ personal wealth..some of which he has loaned to his campaign. unfortunately, money is so important in today’s political campaigns. I have contributed funds in the AG’s race to help the others have a fair chance at getting their messages out. The voter’s should have as much information as possible from all sides to make their choices.
I understand your stated passion. I feel so strongly that Missouri is a wonderful state. Now that I have moved away I have an even greater appreciation for my midwestern upbringing and I do miss the people. Missouri deserves to have strong, talented, and ethical leaders.

I guess it doesn’t get more pathetic or low than posing as a candidates ex in an anonymous post. Is there no depth too low for the Donnelly/Harris crowd of mudslinging losers?

There is nothing as low as accusing her of faking if she isn’t.

You can’t blame Jeff Harris for Koster luandering money. You can’t blame Jeff Harris for Koster’s plagarism. You can’t blame Jeff Harris for Koster voing for the medicaid cuts or photo id. Or supporting Bush, Blunt and Ashcroft.

I think I should just ignore Koster’s lone supporter on the blogs.

Clark, where are you when I need you. We disagree but you make points. Good points.

I have said this before. It took me a while to get there but Koster is really a terrible thing for Democrats.

Hey,

The story about Kilgore recusing himself from Koster’s Ethic’s complaint was finally covered, only in the KC Star. Way to keep up P-D; what is the deal????? If the complaint had something to do with In-Bev sale, then maybe it might have got some attention on this side of the state.

Also, is anyone at the P-D going to figure out what is going on with the current investigation by the MEC into Koster. I am not talking about the complaint filed by the notables, I am talking about the one filed in June that seems to be disappearing off of people’s radars. Guess it is not newsworthy.

I would appreciate it if my paper would look into these matters, they are pretty important to me and likely voters.

Thanks.
