Dem candidate returns Koster contribution

Dr. Vernon (Doc) Harlan, a Democrat running for the 71st District state House seat in the Aug. 5 primary, says that he has returned a $300 donation to his campaign from state Sen. Chris Koster, D-Harrisonville and a St. Louis native who’s running for attorney general.

Harlan cites “the recent revelation that aides to…Koster have been connected to laundering of political funds..”

Harlan was referring to reports, initially by the Associated Press’ David Lieb, that a Koster aide had delivered checks from an independent pro-Democrat campaign committee — the Economic Growth Council — to a representative for a legislative committee. That person then gave a donation from the legislative committee to the Koster aide.

Koster’s critics contend that action violated state campaign law, which bars donors from dictating to legislative committees which candidates get the money.

(The Post-Dispatch ran a detailed story, days before Lieb’s account, about how the committee pass-through system works. We also reported that Koster had benefited the most, percentage-wise, from the practice.)

Koster says no illegal activity took place, and that he has regularly sought guidance from the Ethics Commission. Critics have filed complaints with the commission, which is expected to act after the primary. Commission officials have otherwise declined comment.

In any case, Harlan says he “is also calling on other candidates to avoid any appearance of condoning or benefitting from unethical behavior by returning funds from Koster and his publically discredited Economic Growth Council.”

“I am deeply saddened by Mr. Koster’s decision to circumvent campaign laws by using the Economic Growth Council to access and control hundreds of thousands of laundered dollars,” Harlan said in a statement. “This is especially troubling when done by the man who aspires to be our state’s top justice official. Koster’s actions convey the message that the law is only for the rest of us, not for him and those he supports…”

Jessica,

I envy you your righteousness and your sacchirin venom. If only I could attain such heights of pomp and feigned sincerity I might, like you, be able to be a perfect concern troll. But alas, I’m not a shill, I jus happend to be for Koster and that you don’t like him and your candidate can’t even compete with him in fundraising doesn’t excuse your utterly transparent holier than thou act. My suggestion is that you drop the long suffering Polly Purebread posture and just be honest.

And yeah, it would be low if someone falsely called out Koster’s ex, but that isn’t what happening here. What we have is some low-life, likely associated with your oh-so ethical and pristine candidate, posing as Koster’s ex and that’s all it is. It’s disgusting, purile and inexcusable.

I AM Koster’s ex. If you do not believe me you or anyone else who doubts my identity may email me at Rebeccajuly2008@gmail.com. I want to be sure no one gets falsely blamed for my actions. Do you think the contributions I discussed were fake? Let me be clear..THEY WERE UNSOLICITED AND GIVEN BY MY OWN CHOICE. I contrubuted to help each one get his/her message to the voters. Is it so impossbile for you to believe that someone who had Chris living in her house for about 7 years during the marriage and 3 years after the divorce might have had a chance to form a valid opinion of him and it just might be a very poor one? For years I have stayed quiet while based on my understanding from what I have read, been told and witnessed, Chris spun a version of events and a representation of himself that were full of in inaccuracies (to put it mildly). Do you think it’s possible I just got fed up with reading comments from anonymous strangers about me on the Internet and finally felt compelled to respond? Do think if I were just the crazy ex I would have long ago shouted from the mountaintops all the gory details of my opinion and experiences with Chris? Please consider that I might be a pretty decent person who has been but in a position in which I would rather not be and I am just trying to do what I feel is right.

In response to queries about the first known complaint filed against Koster with the Missouri Ethics Commission:

The commission isn’t commenting, but has indicated that any decision will likely not be made public until after the Aug. 5 primary.

Jo

Don’t you think the public is entitled to know from Mr. Koster who at the ethics commission said this was okay. I don’t believe anyone did or he would have said by now.
