St. Louis Democrat Margaret Donnelly is the first of the four candidates for attorney general to file her campaign finance reports today. Donnelly raised $216,000 this quarter, bringing her total raised during the election cycle to just under a million dollars.

As the AG candidates begin running their television advertisements, cash on hand will be a key figure. Donnelly has about $500,000 on hand according to her MEC report.

In a news release, Donnelly pointed out that she raised money from more than 2,000 individual donors, an obvious shot at Democratic opponent Chris Koster, who is relying primarily on money funnelled through campaign committees as a way to get around donation limits.

Margaret has a good point, but she does have something in common with Chris Koster. Both Margaret Donnelly and Chris Koster have loaned massive amounts of their own money to their campaign coffers. I personally see this as attempts by both of these candidates to buy the office and I, as a small individual donor, don’t like it. The average person is supposed to have some say in who gets elected, and as long as money is the major spokesperson in all of these campaigns, rich people like Koster and Donnelly will use their massive bank accounts to have the loudest voice. It reminds me of what Mitt Romney did in his attempts to buy the White House. I don’t think Harris or Molly Williams have loaned money to their campaigns…does anyone know if they have?

You better be glad someone has the resources to match what Kosters campaign is doing. I am sorry you feel left out, but if she and her 2100 plus donors had not stepped up this primary would have been bought by the Koster Republican Party. Go Margaret!

I view it a bit differently - personal investment shows, to me, a personal stake in the campaign.

And just what has Donnelly’s loan and money raised gotten her? She’s trailing Harris in St. Louis and among female voters. She kept saying that those were the reasons why she was going to win. So why is she losing to Harris? Probably because he’s the better candidate.

I respect Margaret and her record in the House, but she’s not going to win this thing. She doesn’t have the resources to overcome Koster’s advantage. And Jeff Harris has staked out a huge lead. The only thing Donnelly can do at this point is help Koster beat Jeff Harris.

Do we really want a Republican to win this election?

To answer the previous question, Jeff Harris has not loaned his campaign any money, unlike Donnelly and Koster. He has, however, managed to emerge as the true statewide candidate in this race, as this journalistic investigation indicates:

Donnelly had an impressive quarter, but would be behind substantially in overall money if she had not loaned her campaign money.

I was never anti Koster like some on this blog but I don’t know if anyone saw this article about Koster. http://www.columbiatribune.com/2008/Jul/20080715News008.asp

This and the fundraising problems are making me more negative about Koster by the day.

I am getting frustrated that Jay Nixon is silent about this whole mess. It is about time for him to step up and be a leader.

The polling by the Post worried me. I would hope the Donnelly people would see the obvious. Please support Jeff so Koster doesn’t win the thing.
