Koster praises pro-stem cell ruling

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

State Sen. Chris Koster, D-Harrisonville and a candidate for Missouri attorney general, tonight sent out a statement praising a judge’s ruling that in effect kills an legal effort to block $21 million in state money from being allocated for life-sciences research.

The fight had been led by a group called the Missouri Roundtable for Life; the group’s lawyer is Ed Martin, former chief of staff to Gov. Matt Blunt.

Said Koster:“I commend Cole County Judge Jon Beetem for his decision that will allow stem cell research in this state to move forward.

“It is the strong desire of the Republican Party to criminalize stem cell research in our state, despite the clear objections of Missourians and the limitless potential it presents in the areas of medical advancements and economic development. As our next Democratic Attorney General, I plan to fight tirelessly for those in this state who yearn for the next generation of cures, and for the vast majority of Missourians who reject the agenda of the extreme right wing that has hijacked the Republican Party.”

Koster, as we all know, used to be a Republican until last August. Since then, he has taken a lot of hits from Democrats — notably, rival Jeff Harris, a legislator from Columbia — who accuse Koster of not being a true Democrat.

I’m really glad that Koster is supporting this. I realize the “ethical” hurdles , especially in a state like Missouri, but at least theres a chance of more funding for things like single cell biopsy (with the possible chance of avoiding embryo destruction), etc.

I just worry about avoiding the potentially rich source of regenerative medicine in ES stem cells. Their incredible pluripotency and abilities of nearly unlimited expansion could save the lives of many Americans. I implore the religious right to consider the use of excess embryos from in vitro fertilization in stem cell research. These embryos will be destroyed anyway. Please, either bring the embryo to term yourself or allow their use in medical research.

Jo, what is the point of serving as an outlet for this type of hackneyed hyperbole by a candidate?
Koster’s shrill complaint is pure red herring. No where will anyone find a connection in this action to “criminalizing stem cell research.” The legal question is about how much control legislators have to represent their people when taxdollars are involved.

Furthermore, the fact that Koster and “REPUBLICAN” Blunt are on the same side on this debunks Koster’s silly assertion that those offended by cloning hold one party label.

Chris Koster is a liar. He voted for Matt Bartle’s anti-cloning bill in committee. (SB 160 voted on in the Judiciary and Civil and Criminal Jurisprudence Committee on Febraury 14, 2005) Then the cloning industry and pro cloning lobbyist Jorgan Schlemeir and his clients gave him thousands of dollars. Then he changes he position. Jeff Harris is wrong on this issue but at least you know where he stands.

Koster switch on stem cell was not one of conviction. Like his party switch it was one of political opportunism.

Reporters have to stop giving Koster a free pass. He needs to explain why after he took the money he switched his position.

Pro-Life Dem is right. Koster opposed stem cell until he realized how much money he could get from guys like Stowers. Then suddenly, overnight, he flip-flopped and decided stem cell research was good.

And does anyone take Chris Koster seriously when he talks about the GOP being “hijacked”? He was part of that “right wing” until a year ago, helping them cut health care.

What a phony.

I am a proud democrat because I support not just the unborn but also the born. I consider myself a catholic progressive. I am against the death penalty, unrestrained corporate farming, photo id, corporate welfare, MOHELA and Matt Blunt’s health care cuts. I do not have a lot of respect for Ed Martin. I would agree with him on stem cell but little else. I have voted for “pro choice” democrats before and I will again. In the abstract, I prefer a pro life democrat like Harry Kennedy or Joan Barry but you can’t always get what you want. There are more pro life democrats like me than you think. I have been to the Capitol many times to make this point.
Jeff Harris and Margaret Donnelly have always been straight with us and I respect them for that.

Jorgen Schlemeier arranged for Chris Koster to get all this cloning money not because of Koster’s views on cloning but because Koster will do what ever it takes for Schlemeier’s clients. The proof is this. Chris Koster voted with us until he started getting money from the industry.

Phony is right. The only thing Koster stands for is himself. I wouldn’t trust the guy alone at the table with my sandwich, never mind trust him to be attorney general.

So which of the AG candidates have come out the strongest against human clones? As in, which one would put human clones in jail?

So the general consensus is that: 1. Stem cell research is bad 2. Koster sold out
What kind of research would these state funds go to? ES stem cells or somatic stem cells? I noticed the term \”cloning\” being used…is that a reference to cell culture? What exactly are we talking about?
