Maida Coleman takes side in tough Tower Grove primary

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Locked in a tough political battle in the city’s near-south side, State House hopeful Joan Landmann announced today the support of State Sen. Maida Coleman.

Landmann, an attorney, is squaring off against four other Democrats in the primary race to replace term-limited State Rep. Mike Daus in the district that includes the area around Tower Grove Park.

The lead in money and endorsements seems to belong to another attorney, Mike Colona, who also appears to have been the target of a swipe in Coleman’s announcement that she’s supporting Landmann.

“It is telling that Joan, in a very unique way, has run a grassroots campaign that has not been bought by special interests and political machines,” Coleman said.

Also in the race is school activist Chad Beffa; Rob Stelzer, whose father, Jack, is the Eighth Ward Committeeeman; and political newcomer Emily Jo Pierce.

Just because you can’t raise money doesn’t mean you’re running a grassroots campaign… and just because you can, doesn’t mean you’re not. While I’d expect most politicians to understand that fact, I’ll forgive the Senator from the 5th for her ignorance - one doesn’t really have any reason to understand what real grassroots campaigning is if the only offices you’ve ever won have been ones you were appointed to or won by default.

Wow, TJ and along the same line of reasoning: Just because Mike Colona works for pornographers, ensuring that his clients are in compliance with the federal reporting requirements placed on pornographers as a result of the industries past record of hiring minors as actors (minor being defined here as being under the age of eighteen) doesn’t mean that he’s not protecting his pornographer clients but as Mike Colona has said he is protecting the children they employ. So how is Mike Colona going to be tough on crime? Would Mike Colona be tough on crime by say, ensuring these children don’t drink a beer before they are 21? But Mike Colona has no problem with allowing a child of eighteen working in the pornographic movie industry. There is the law and then there is what’s right. While this business is not illegal I cannot understand why the police and firefighter organizations have endorsed this, dare I say man. Maybe it’s is because he is the only candidate that is against Home Rule - well he’s against it now. How he ever received an endorsement from a teacher’s union is beyond comprehension. Mike Colona would never be able to walk across the aisle to get the votes needed for any Democratic legislative initiative to move forward with this monkey comfortably on his back in MO’s very partisan and very conservative General Assembly. Mike Colona has a choice about the clients he takes, and keeps - even if he does donate the campaign money received to charity just so there is no appearance of impropriety. Puleeze

Also, definitely not grass roots is Mike Colona’s taking a tour of 67th district drinking establishments on a Friday night in a fire truck parade vehicle. Courtesy of one of the political committees sponsoring his campaign.

Congratulations to Joan Landmann and best of luck to you! Hopefully Maida Coleman’s endorsement will help you as much as it helped Amber Boykins and Jim Shrewsbury!

The irony of Coleman’s praise of Landmann’s “grassroots” campaign is that Coleman hasn’t knocked on 100 doors in her district in 8 years.

Why the continued attacks to discredit Colona with the same irrelevant information? It appears desperate and almost as if this is the only tactic available to bump him from the front-runner position.

Why doesn’t the discussion center on each of the candidates strengths? I think that is what is most important when making a decision on whom to represent us in Jeff City.

Let’s get down to it here…as Jake Wagman states in this piece, all of the candidates “have been bought by special interests and political machines”….Joan Landmann is rallying the support of the Tower Grove Lesbian community, using them to propel her; Rob Stelzer is riding on the coat-tails of his father’s political connections (“Rob Stelzer, whose father, Jack, is the Eighth Ward Committeeeman”), as is Chad Beffa.

Again, with the race almost at the end, can we please see some journalistic details on the candidates’ strengths?

I agree with soutside girl. “Not that Dude”, dare I say dude - you seem very bitter.

I am glad to hear that the candidates are getting around the district and supporting the local businesses!!! We have really got something good going on here. Keep up the support everyone. It is great for the neighborhood! It is so energizing to see everyone enjoying it!

I was actually at the Royale, as was Joan Landmann, when Colona, firefighters, friends and family all came in. I was glad to see their support.

Mike Colona’ work for the pornography industry is not irrelevant. It is wholly relevant, because as I say above with this monkey comfortably on his back Mike Colona will never be able to effectively cross the aisle to gain the republican votes necessary for the passage of any legislation. Working for the the pornography indrusty is not irrelevant.
