“Mom” Steelman gets personal in latest ad

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Republican hopeful for governor Sarah Steelman attacks party rival Kenny Hulshof as a Washington insider.

Without mentioning specifics, Steelman attacks Hulshof’s “wasteful spending record” in Congress, and makes another I’m One of You appeals in her latest television commerical.

“Politicians call it taxpayer money,” Steelman says. “I’m a mom — I call it your money.”

This is not the first time Steelman has included family in her political pitch. A previous commercial closed with Steelman and her sons chatting on a porch — though the spot was shot on a ranch belonging to former U.S. Attorney Todd Graves, brother of U.S. Rep. Sam Graves.

What’s up with the video and audio being out of sync?

It’s a casualty of technology. We subscribe to a service that sends us a file of the commercial when it comes out — however, it’s in Real Player format, which, as far as I know, is not compatible with YouTube. So, I use another program to convert the video to a format that is YouTube friendly, but, unfortunately, the audio is sometimes out of sync.

Still, I figure it’s better to get the video up quickly, then spend a long time trying to figure out how to make the audio perfect.

If anybody knows of a better way to upload Real Media files to YouTube, drop me a line: jwagman@post-dispatch.com

Emotional appeal, the last refuge of a scoundrel. Steelman’s campaign is going down in flames, so now she puts a soft edge on a nasty negative commercial.

I have been following the primary for some time now. I agree with Ms. Steelman re: Rod Jetton and others who have “hijacked” the MRP. It is ashame that Mr. Jetton and others of their ilk were able to gain control of the party and have us all painted with the same brush.

I do disagree with Ms. Steelman on earmarks. I mean what could be more deomcratic then returning taxpayer $$$ to the communities from where it came?

Overall I still have yet to make up my mind. I have to admit that I am leaning Ms. Steelman’s way at this point in time.

honesty: “I mean what could be more democratic then returning taxpayer $$$ to the communities from where it came?”

I’d rather leave the taxpayer dollars in the community’s pocketbooks in the first place, and cut out the middleman.

(In the interests of full disclosure, I am running for Governor.)

Sarah Steelman will not win the primary, much less the governorship, but every time she runs a negative ad like this, she is boosting the likelihood of Democrat victory in November.

Mary, how in the world is this ad considered negative? When David Cantanese asked Congressman about his earmark votes, that is exactly how he answered. Who would you like to inform voters of this? Kenny? Sarah Steelman is simply trying to spread the truth about Kenny Hulshof, nothing more, nothing less. Let the voters decide if they want a Congressman who voted for 11,000 earmarks (not exaggerated) or a Economist who has a proven record of being a fiscal conservative, and a free-market thinker.
