UPDATED: Obama to speak here this weekend at African Methodist Episcopal conference

Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign has confirmed that the senator will be making an appearance at the African Methodist Episcopal church conference in Saturday.

Obama will make an afternoon address to the AME conference at the America’s Center. The speech is NOT open to the public.

Both Obama and Sen. John McCain were invited by the church to speak at the national gathering of AME leaders and laypeople. The AME is a predominantly black church, but it does have small groups of white and Hispanic members, as well as some members in India.

Obama’s presence is particularly interesting given the controversy during the primary season over his former pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Wright, though not an AME minister, is a leader in black theology circles.

Obama drew criticism from Wright and some others when he distanced himself from his long-time church after clips of a few inflammatory remarks made a national news splash. Obama said that some of Wright’s remarks, which criticized the U.S. over various issues, didn’t conform to Obama’s own faith and view of his country.

Again, Obama’s speech is not open to the public, but downtown activities this weekend ought to be drawing a lot of traffic (the Cards-Cubs game starts at 2:55 p.m.) so keep that in mind.

UPDATE FROM JO MANNIES:

Here’s more details, provided at a Thursday night press conference held by church leaders:

Close to 30,000 leaders of the historically black denomination are attending its 48th quadrennial session of the General Conference, which begins today at the America’s Center.

Obama will first meet privately with church bishops before addressing the convention, said Bishop Philip R. Cousin Sr., head of the church’s 4th District, which includes Chicago, Obama’s hometown.

Cousin and other church leaders said that they had issued a similar invitation to John McCain, the Republican presumptive presidential nominee, to address the convention. McCain’s campaign did not respond, said the conference chairperson, Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie.

Yeah, Obama is speaking at this conference, but couldn’t find the time to speak to the Democratic Leadership Councel, a centrist organization, when he was home in Chicago last week and of course the PD couldn’t be bothered to report the snub.

DLC Could Use Some TLC (from the WSJ)

The Democratic Leadership Council, home of the moderate Democrats who helped incubate Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign, held its annual meeting in Chicago last weekend. Even though it was only a block from Barack Obama’s national campaign headquarters, the presumptive Democratic nominee couldn’t be bothered to drop by. Mr. Obama was in town on Sunday when the DLC was meeting, but his schedule consisted of a morning workout at a gym, followed by a haircut. He then shot some hoops at a basketball court with his family and attended a barbecue at a friend’s house.

It’s an old adage that one should watch what politicians do, not what they say. Mr. Obama may be making all kinds of centrist noises on the campaign trail these days but political analyst Taegan Goddard says it’s pretty clear that “he’s not willing to incur the wrath of liberal Democrats by speaking at the convention of the group described by many as ‘Republican-lite.’”

Guess what Centrist? Obama is a liberal, and everyone in the country already knows it, and yet he is still leading in all of the polls. The reality is that after seeing the country trashed under conservative ideology, the political landscape has shifted and liberal is no longer a bad word. Exhibit A: the only argument Craig’s got is that Obama is too much like Bush! ha!

PS This also means that you should officially change your name to A RIGHT WING FRINGER, but we all knew that two years ago.

How does this post make Obama like Bush? Bush would never even dream of attending this event.

“Obama is a liberal, and everyone in the country already knows it, and yet he is still leading in all of the polls.”

Big Freakin deal! Dukakis, Mondale, Gore and Kerry all had leads in the summer leading up to their defeat in November.

“The reality is that after seeing the country trashed under conservative ideology, the political landscape has shifted and liberal is no longer a bad word.”

Ok, then why is Obamessiah running to the center, moving his positions away from the far left positions he has held for so long?

Emaples: Gun Control. Early in his career, Obamessiah supported the complete ban on all semi automatic weapons, now he says he agrees with the Supreme Court.
Abortion. NARAL has their collective panties in a wad because Obamessiah says there should not be a mental health exemption for late term abortion.
FISA. After promising the nutroots he would filibuster it if it contained telecom immunity, he rolled over and now embraces the bill.
Iraq. He’s been all over the place this week, but it would seem now that he is backing off his declaration that he will immediately pull troops out, now he will listen to the Generals.

If he was proud of his liberal positions, no scratch that, if he thought for one damn second he could win with his liberal positions, he would still have them. He knows as well as anyone liberal ideas will lose the election.

Does that make you happy Adam? I know you lefties like to categorize everyone into a box. Interesting post DW. Adam, perhaps then you would be the authority then as to why Obama is making such a right turn and not appeasing his base if the country has shifted so far to the left because of the evil Bush administration. Why doesn’t he just stay to the left? What is he afraid of if that is where the majority of the electorate is? I am sure you have an insiteful answer for me. This should be good.

RIGHT WING FRINGE KOOK,

I think many on both the left and right love labeling people and placing them within the small boxes.

Now to these ones and types, African American minister, Rev. Wright is a illegitimate pastor and the church he lead is a false illegitimate church and Christian religion, so now these ones in their hearts now consider all Black churches questionable and illegitimate, even thought they have no clue as to what a church is or what God’s word says, nor anything about mankind really or the fact that even ministers are imperfect. Go figure.
