On Fox News, Ed Martin takes on A-B takeover

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The peripatetic Ed Martin — former Chief of Staff to Gov. Matt Blunt, head of the St. Louis Elections Board and aide to the Archbishop — was on the Fox News Channel moments ago, discussing his opposition to the takeover of Anheuser-Busch by Belgian beer giant InBev. Ed Martin

Martin, co-fouder of the website and online petition at SaveAB.com, was put on the defensive slightly by the conservative news network, where the anchor, a Neil Cavuto understudy, wondered why not let the free market decide whether the merger is good or bad.

Here’s the deal,” Martin replied. “Capitalism at work includes caring about where things are made, and how they’re made, and the culture of the company.”

He went on to argue that InBev leveraged itself so much to make the $52 billion deal that the company might not have the resources to maintain the Budweiser brand.

An American brand, Martin said. (Was that a flag pin on his lapel?)

This isn’t a widget maker in some other place,” Martin siad. “This is a company that is built on being an American original.”

Ed “No More Free Trade” Martin hates capitalism. He wants to force companies to keep their jobs in the U.S. and to make sure they pay their employees a living wage. What a living lampoon of self-righteous hokum.

Jake, is there any truth to the rumor that the state is funding Martin’s little self-promotional glory trot to protect AB? Everyone does realize that Martin’s effort had more to do with promoting him and not saving AB, right?

I thought Ed Martin’s recent efforts on behalf of St. Louis were pretty cool. Ed previously stood up for Archbishop Burke on public radio when Burke was most hated. I don’t see what Martin has to gain for himself by such efforts. I wish St. Louis had more people like him.

Why could anyone possibly care what Ed Martin has to say about anything? He has virtually no influence on anything relevant.

I am no Ed Martin fan, but he does have some residual influence because we”re talking about him here and that’s the key to self promotion - always keep them talking.
