Record turnout? St. Louis county wants YOU!
With all the talk of potential record turnout at elections this year (both in August and November), the St. Louis County Board of Elections has announced an aggressive recruitment program to get more poll workers. The campaign involves both a direct mail blitz this week as well as a new online page here.In a release, Joe Donahue, elections director, says that the county wants the aid of corporations, local groups, students and individuals in making this one happen.County Exec Charlie Dooley adds: “It’s a very important election year, and poll workers are essential to making the local election process happen successfully.”Though the release doesn’t say so, the Internet recruiting could very well draw some younger volunteers to the polls, something that the county and others around the country have tried to do in recent years.Election activists and officials themselves have lamented at times the lack of involvement of youth and polling places. Having younger poll workers can helps with the implementation of new technology and bridging age barriers for younger voters, some officials have said in the past.(My colleague Paul Hampel reported on those ideas back in February, but alas there’s no longer a valid online link.)Of course, the political voyer in me thinks that working a polling place on Election Day, especially this November, might also be a pretty cool way to witness what is being billed as the biggest election in decades.

the stl county needs election day workers? what about more everyday workers to keep up with record numbers of registrations? How about 100% accessible polling places? Polling places are not accessible. How about providing every voter a paper ballot when they vote? DREs are not reliable! Ask for a paper ballot every time you vote. Maybe a state holiday for election day? Lets make it free and fair.
