Steelman’s late ad push stresses immigration

Remember immigration? The issue seems so six-months ago now that foreclosure rates and gas prices have teamed-up to weigh down the economy.

Republican hopeful for governor Sarah Steelman, though, believes the debate still has enough political punch to make it the focus of her latest ad, which comes with Election Day just over a week away.

The ad praises Steelman’s record on immigration, and, predictably, disparages her primary rival, U.S. Rep. Kenny Hulshof.

Steelman credits herself with forcing a company using illegal immigrants to replace the workers with local employees. This is fairly accurate: As state treasurer, Steelman threatened to withhold $1.4 million in tax credits from a St. Charles County construction site where illegal immigrants were discovered.

On the other side, Steelman takes a bit more liberties with her attack on Hulshof.

True, Hulshof did vote against a measure that prohibited authorizing funds on inspections that would allow Mexican trucks into the U.S. (Sorry for all of the double-negatives — that’s Beltway speak for you.)

But the Democratic-sponsored amendment was more a union-backed attempt to bolster American jobs than, as Steelman suggests, a crackdown on smuggling.

What about the Mexican ID cards, which is the real question on immigration for Congressman Hulshof. That is differant than the truck inspection vote you mention. How does he defend the ID cards in light of the FBI warning?

Tony, Tony, Tony, the amendment was put on the bill so the Department of transportation couldn’t issue permits to unsafe mexican trucks and unreliable mexican truck drivers to operate on our roads. 82 repubs voted different than Holshoff by the way. No funding = no Mexican trucks getting across the border. The illegals immigrants are stealing our jobs, so what does Congressman Hulshof do, he votes to allow mexican trucks passage across our border. Sounds like a real protection of MO jobs. Hah. And why would anyone in Congress listen to the FBI about a National issue of immigration, what do they know? I think we need leaders who have the ability to listen to others, especially when the other person is an expert on the issue.

Corrupted, I know that you don’t like to let facts get in the way of a good rant against Hulshof but why don’t you listen to reason just once this election cycle. If you do—I know I’m asking too much already—you will see that Kenny voted against Mexican trucks just last year http://www.congressandimmigration.com/HR1773_final_vote_results.htm. Also, FAIR gave him a 100% in their illegal immigration score card http://www.fairus.org/site/DocServer/109th_HouseVotingRpt.pdf?docID=1221, Numbers USA gave Kenny an A- for the past few years, (won’t allow links) as did Grassfire http://grassfire.org/42/Scorecard.asp. So why don’t follow your own advice and listen to the experts. And in case you haven’t figured it out yet, the experts in this issue are not the ones that can’t even read immigration reports correctly, http://www.minutemanhq.com/state/read.php?chapter=MO&sid=818 .

I can’t stand it anymore!!!!!!!!Couls Steelman say one thing She has accomplished instead of bashing Kenny?!?!?!?!??! Kenny is the man for the job and I am sick the way she twists everything around. I bet she and Spence Jackson stay up all night thinking of something unkind to say…My Mother always said…If you can’t say something nice about someone….don’t say anything at all! What are her children learning fromher example?

Kenny you are the right choice….keep strong we are behind you!!!!!!

Wait, so Kenny voted on both sides of the issue? Thats typical. It is no wonder our federal government can’t get anything done with Congressmen voting on both sides of the issues.

Jsure, did you even watch the ad? “Could Steelman say one thing She has accomplished instead of bashing Kenny?!” Kenny does just as much attacking as Sarah, then he turns around and says attacking people is bad. Sounds like his votes on both sides of the immigration issue. Does he vote both ways so he appeals to all voters? Sounds like a politician to me.

Hmmmm… a little biased are we Jake? Steelman’s claim was “fairly accurate”. All you wrote was she did exactly what she said she did. How is this “fairly accurate”? I would say her claim on her actions against illegal workers was just “accurate”.
