Steelman’s outsider status plays in two ads — hers and Hulshof’s
With primary Election Day less than a week away, it’s hard to keep up with the furious pace of television advertising from rivals Sarah Steelman and Kenny Hulshof.
But, there is no shortage of material as both campaigns simply play off each other.
First, there is this spot from Steelman, in which she boasts “politicians never endorse me. I’m not one of them. I’m one of you.”
Hulshof, though, challenges Steelman’s outsider credentials, tying her to developers and trial attorneys in his new ad. This commercial actually references an earlier Steelman ad that, of course, focused on a Hulshof video clip.
Who said there are no original thoughts?
There is, though, at least one group that should be happy Steelman and Hulshof have each other — the media buyers who are making a bundle off the back and forth.

And Jay Nixon who will capture disaffected Republican voters in November.
Sarah is talking about tax-payers money, and he is saying what? That her campaign contributions are our money? What is going on? His commercial is just confusing. If their is anyone in Jeff City that is not for sale it is Sarah Steelman, that is not even contestable. I thought that he thought Negative commercials are were bad, I think he has confused himself with his campaign. Has John Hancock lost his mind?
I like Sarah’s ad much more. I wish Kenny and his washinton buddies would stop spending our money, with any luck McCain will win and stop the wasteful earmarks. Even Kenny has said time and again that Washington has failed us, I don’t know if it has hit him yet, he was part of that failed establishment.
Corrupted is spot-on.
Hulshof’s attack on Steelman is just nonsense.
Hulshof must be getting desperate.
Jake,
This is the first post of yours where I didn’t sense your normal hostility towards Steelman. I’m glad you’re getting your anger issues against women worked out. Keep seeing your therapist. No matter how much your buddies make fun of you it’s helping.
Yeah, Steelman doesn’t want the endorsement of other politicians. That’s why at the Republican state convention, when Kit Bond announced his endorsement of Kenny Hulshof, Steelman was in tears when she took the stage. Believe this, if the endorsements had come in the other way, she’d be playing a different tune.
Nick, you don’t have the facts straight about Sarah at the convention. She wasn’t in tears, and went up there and gave a great speech under difficult circumstances. She got quite a response. Also, the point on endorsements is not whether Steelman would prefer to have them or not have them. It is this. Hulshof will do anything to get the establishment behind him. It is the centerpiece of his campaign. “Vote for me, I’m the chosen one.” Sarah is willing to stand up and do what is right, even if it costs her endorsements from the politicians.
Nick Kasoff…
I think you’re making it up as you go along. Here’s a link to the Political Fix article about Steelman’s response to Bonds endorsement.

Your tune keeps changing. Maybe they should hink about hiring you on a music station. You could be the music.
“Who said there are no original thoughts?”
I DO!
John & observer - I was near the center, and about six rows back at the state convention. It was obvious that she was choking back tears. Now let me make something very clear: I don’t wish that on anybody, whether I support them politically or not. Having your state’s senior senator unexpectedly endorse your opponent minutes before you are to make a speech has to be a real kick in the gut.
But reality is, Hulshof didn’t have to “do anything” to get these endorsements. Most political observers can easily see that while Steelman is a sincere conservative and a decent person, Jay Nixon will mop the floor with her. Hulshof is also a sincere conservative and a decent person - and he will throw the hard punches it will take to send Nixon packing.
Nick,
I think you’re assesment of Steelman’s capabilities against Nixon are made from a blind eye.
Steelman presents contrast, integrity, and strength. She will appeal to the independent voter that would like to see Missouri have its first woman Governor. She appeals to those that are sick and tired of the establishment status quo. She appeals to those that are tired of the “party line”; both Democrat and Republican. She appeals to those that think attorneys (as long as the Missouri Bar remains a committee of the Judiciary) should not be given control of another branch of our government. And she appeals to those that think Missouri, like most other states in this Union, is approaching a financial crisis that can be best dealt with by an economist, not a lawyer.
Hulshof has avoided a direct answer to anything Steelman has thrown at him. He just keeps whining about how her ads are attack ads, yet he claims that his record is fair game. He claims to have a vision, but only shares that vision with empty rhetoric. Hulshof is a mouse that will easily be trappd by his former boss (Jay Nixon).
Kenny worked for Jay Nixon. Nixon knows his weaknesses. They’re both attorneys. They both toe the party line.
If the Republicans want a candidate that has a real chance of beating Nixon in November, and if Missouri wants a Governor that is more interested in the people than the party, (be it Democrat or Republican) Sarah Steelman is the answer.
I sincerely believe that Steelman is the answer Missouri has been looking for. She’s the one that can end this two-party stalemate that’s been constricting our development for far too many years.
We’ve been the Show-Me State for far too long. It’s time to become the Show-Them State. Steelman is the Governor to do just that.
I know it’s not in good taste to speak of the large paper from the second rate city down I-70 on the other side of the state, but I couldn’t help but laugh at the videos the KC Star put up from their endorsement meetings with Hulshof and Steelman. Steelman looked like she was taking a page out of freshman algebra by looking down at some notes on her lap to answer questions. I mean, c’mon people, she is not all there. And these are really simple questions. Hulshof isn’t hitting her at all, compared to what Nixon would do. Hulshof is letting her fall all over herself. Nixon would definitely give her a shove.
Jacob Scola. Where did I see that name?
Oh yeah. It was another lame post that lacked substance.
Seriously, who gives a rats behind about someone looking at their notes?
How long have you been working for Kenny? Why is a guy from Liberty, MO posting on a St. Louis Blog? Isn’t Kenny sharp enough to tell you to cover your tracks?
Why don’t you just come over here and say “I think Kenny’s dreamy, and I think Steelman is yucky”? Wait a minute. After reading you post, that is essentially what you did.
You Steelman fans need to quit hyperventilating. There is no question that she takes positions to set herself up for cash and Hulshof’s ad just tells the truth. She’s been so desperate since the beginning of this campaign that she forgot to talk about her ideas (if she has any) for Missouri. She just banged away at Hulshof for this whole race trying to find a ridiculous accusation that would stick.
Maybe you should close your eyes and listen to her, since she is a pretty woman.
Then close your eyes and listen to him. He makes sense and has good ideas.
Their character and intellect are on different levels–his all far higher level. He has the leadership skills to work WITH folks to get things done for us. Her record is all about fighting with people to make a name for herself.–Melissa
Melissa- in 12 years in congress the only thing Kenny could do was talk, he didn’t get one bill passed that he sponsored. We need solutions in Mo, not Washington squabble.
melissa- Sarah’s ideas are the only ones being talked about in the primary. Tax-reform, ending the ethanol mandate, stoping politicians from moonlighting as consultants, cracking down on illegal immigration, switching from map or end of school assesment tests to the A.C.T, those are all Steelman’s ideas. You may not agree with them, but to say she has no ideas is just stupid, THEY ARE THE ONLY IDEAS BEING TALKED ABOUT. All you Kenny cronies can say is he has vision and he is an honorable man, I’m sure he is an honorable man, but Sarah is an honorable woman WITH ideas.
And saying his intellect and character are on higher levels? Come on, of that was true he wouldn’t have got pummeled in the Ky3 debate- Tony Messengers words, not mine. Grow up Melissa and try to think about what your writing.
I am not a huge fan of corn ethanol. But Steelman saying gas prices going up? Ridiculous.
Dear dale, go to the show-me institute and read the objective reports about the cost of the ethanol mandate to missouri taxpayers. It is very simple, ethanol equals less energy. Less energy equals less mileage. Less mileage equals more fillups at the pump, more fillups at the pump equals more cost to missourians.
