Web Watch: ‘Coal makes us sick’

The YouTube audience is currently eating up comments by Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid that burning fossil fuels creates health hazards.

Reid’s comments however were phrased more bluntly than that: “Coal makes us sick,” he said.

That pill isn’t settling well with a number of folks. To people already skeptical of global warming, like this gentleman, Reid’s comments and his choice of words apparently seems like another dubious claim. Others just think that with energy prices the way they are, ignoring any source is wrong.

On the other hand, there are plenty of people who believe that fossil fuel consumption and its related pollution has an impact on air quality thus heath. And others are skeptical that coal can ever be “clean.”

I’m not wading into that debate, but I wonder how Reid’s comments will play, say in southern Illinois, where folks sit of some of the U.S.’ biggest coal reserves. And then you have the issue that both Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain support “clean coal” and “carbon capture” programs.

(Just last week, I posted on the whole idea of FutureGen, the now scuttled next generation power plant that had been planned for central Illinois.)

On the other hand, more and more folks are buying hybrid cars and calling for new environmental regulation.

Anybody have some thoughts? Reid’s clip is below.

What an idiot. What makes Americans sick is clowns like Dingy Harry and San Fran Nan who promised us over two years ago they had a plan to bring down oil prices. Since these idiots took control of congress, diesel prices have DOUBLED! Do these clowns or the circus they represent have ANY solution to gas prices? HELL NO. The Supreme Leader, Obamessiah, has said he doesnt mind the high prices, he just wishes it was more gradual increase. What is the only solutions these clowns have came up with? Sue OPEC and bring back the 70’s windfall profits tax. OPEC has even said we should exploit our own reserves!

Gee sic, doesn’t the Executive Branch make energy policy? And doesn’t the DOE (courtesy of the Exec Branch) acknowledge more drilling isn’t going to affect prices?
What we need is an energy policy we can build a future on, instead of an energy policy designed to enrich a few oil companies. A TRUE conservative would support conservation and alternative sources, not that the neocons you chum with would know what true conservatism is.

Oil was $20 a barrel when W started his illegal, agressive war in Iraq.

Oil is now $140 a barrel, and W’s buddies at Exxon, Haliburton, KBR, etc are swimming in billions!

Hey, America, What color are Bush’s pajamas? Don’t know? You should, he’s been screwing you for eight years!

Reid is not only an idiot, but also a phony. Did you know he converted to being a Mormon just to get elected in Nevada?

Tim would you please review for me what Clinton and Gore did about energy independence during their 8 years. I can’t seem to find anything on the Internet on it. Thanks.

Darren01, don’t let facts get in the way of attacking scary Democratic boogeymen. The astronomically low approval ratings of Congress indicate that Democrats are dissatisfied with how business is being conducted there - because the Democratic majority is giving too much to the Republicans. The problem isn’t that the Democratic party is in control; it’s that it’s doing too much to pass awful, Republican policies.

Theres no chance the high cost of oil has anything to do with the weak dollar and the fact that oil is traded internationally in $ demarcations. Scapegoating by blaming speculation just illustrates a lack of understanding of how commodity markets function. Other factors play a significant role in the pricing. Inflationary movement by the Fed tends to affect the price of more dynamic markets like oil than the sticky prices of regular goods at the grocery store. Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum - its a bit hypocritical to use empty rhetoric to attack liberal leaders and then offer no advice of your own. Semper Ubi Sub Ubi.

Obama & the Moron Reid are going to drive gas prices so high we’ll think $140 a barrel is cheap.

Straighten yer tin foil hat Timmy H.

It looks a little crooked.
