Blagojevich making nice in Denver

DENVER – Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s comments to a roomful of (mostly) supporters at a late-night reception in the Hotel Monaco, having arrived here Tuesday for the Democratic National Convention:

* “The governor of Illinois, you don’t get prime-time – no time.’’ (In reference to his being snubbed from the lineup of Illinois speechmakers Monday – drew a big laugh.)

* “We’re all here to get together as Democrats . . . a party that sometimes doesn’t agree with each other.’’

* “We’ve had our ups and downs in Illinois . . . there’s nothing new about that.’’

Blagojevich is trying to smooth things over with his fellow Illinois Democrats, some of whom are angry that while they were in Denver giving speeches in support of home-town candidate Barack Obama, he was back in Chicago rewriting a major ethics bill that they wanted left alone.

We’ll see if it worked when he speaks to the contentious Illinois delegation at a breakfast Wednesday.

So the governor repeatedly knifes his colleagues in the back, and expects a limo and red carpet? Sorry, Mr. Blagojevich, it doesn’t work that way.
