Blunt, Kinder call on Muschany to resign

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Calling the alleged actions of Rep. Scott Muschany, R-Frontenac, “reprehensible,” Gov. Matt Blunt and Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder issued separate statements today calling for Muschany to resign his seat in the House.

Muschany was indicted yesterday by a Cole County grand jury on a felony charge of “deviate sexual assault.” If convicted he could face up to 7 years in prison. Muchany is suspected of assaulting the 14-year-old daughter of a former House employee. Muschany and the victim’s mother were involved romantically.

“I was extremely troubled to learn that Rep. Scott Muschany is facing felony charges for sexual assault of a minor. This alleged misconduct is reprehensible and cannot and will not be tolerated,” said Kinder in an e-mailed statement. “Today, I call on my fellow Republican leaders to join me in calling for Rep. Muschany’s immediate resignation from the Missouri House.”

Blunt also called on Muschany to resign, if the charges against him prove true.

Muschany’s lawyer told the Post-Dispatch yesterday that the allegations are “false.”

I saw this one coming. Unless this girl has some real evidence against this political figure. This case will be closed by the courts as quick as it opened! LOCAL Prosecuters will NOT touch it. This is a real tragedy. I really hope that this 14 year old minor gets the opportunity to tell her story. Our prayers are with her, and her family

Isn’t it interesting how the “holier than thou” Republicans seem to repeatedly end up in scandalous sexual misadventures. I believe Muschany claimed he wasn’t running for reelection because he wanted to spend more time with his wife and son. That would be a first. I wonder if he can pull himself away from his girlfriend long enough to do that. Course hopefully she wants nothing more to do with him. I think we should follow the Republican anti-crime mantra and send this one away for a long, long time.

Gov. Matt Blunt and Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder are a little late in calling for Rep. Scott Muschany’s resignation..Why didn’t they call for it when this investigation and and the allegations of sexual abuse of a minor came to light in May of this year almost 2 1/2 months ago?
While I have very harsh feelings against anyone convicted of any crime against a child I do know that children can be led to say things that are not true…..This man could be a victim of a ex lovers revenge and has not been convicted of anything….I think I will wait to make any judgement of this man until he gets a chance to present his case in front of a judge and jury. Should he resign? Yes I think so even if he is innocent of the allegations of child rape he is guilty of having morals unfit for public service.

It takes a lifetime to build up and maintain a reputation - and just one event to destroy it…

As a fellow Republican - and fellow Christian - I believe Mr. Muschany should come clean on this as quickly as possible. To have his lawyer be his mouthpiece is sad - unless he has something to hide. As always, there are never any winners in these stories - but Mr. Muschany COULD be a winner if he tells the truth - and fast. If he admits to it, he should apologize and resign immediately.

John Edwards should do the same. As a public figure and leading Democrat, he should come clean with regards to his alledged affair and ‘love child.’ As the Post-Dispatch has indicated on this issue……oh, wait - I’m sorry. The Post and the rest of the mainstream media has avoided THIS story entirely (!)….how silly of me!

Scott Muschany needs to be tarred and feathered. I am in the capitol quite a bit and I have heard many stories of these representatives and senators having their in-session girlfriends. The way they flirt is despicable. What he has done to this girl and her family is indeed, reprehensible.

And what reliable source do you have about this hogwash and John Edwards??? Fox Noise? It is funny that we haven’t heard anything about it…considering that it is more than likely (extreme understatement) that it is Rove-tactics rearing its ugly head. They just never learn…

The difference between John Edwards is that he had an affair with a woman (if that is true). These Republicans have either homosexual affairs (of which they usually preach is morally wrong) while being married to their stepford wives or illegal affairs with minors. Oh yeah didnt that legislator from Florida do the double whammy!!

if edwards preaches to be a christian, and if he cheated on his wife (she has cancer)…thats horrible too..

hes a liar…just like all of em…

if this cat had sex with a minor…he should be thrown in jail for longer than the 7 years they are saying!

love the old senator that was caught in the minnesota airport too…

the republicans (i am one) are really doing well to keep up with the dems on disgracing themselves…

Even Fox News won’t confirm the story. They just report that it’s in the National Enquirer (that trusted source of journalism that it is) and they just have all their editorial people repeatedly saying “why hasn’t the main stream media picked up this story?”. If there was proof, you can bet Fox would be all over it for as long as their viewers could stomach it (which would be a long long time).

What I don’t understand is how this is only a crime punishible for up to 7 years in jail. Why is he not being tried for plain old out and out rape like the rest of us peons would be-

I don’t care if it’s a Republican or Democrat…. politicians are as a majority pretty much scum and ALL think they are above the law.

To the blog comment regarding “…children being led to say things that are not true,” it is worth noting that even then it would be due to “an ex-lover’s revenge.”

While he has not been convicted, his decision not to run (which followed shortly on the heels of the incident) should have been taken as a self-indictment.

Governor Blunt should not be too quick to throw stones, however. He may need a friend when his own indictments come down.

I’m a liberal democrat evangelical Christian (yes, there are some of us who believe in God and try to emulate the life of Jesus), and I like Zuno am repulsed and disgusted by those who preach on Sunday and sin from Monday through Saturday. This is what the Republican party gets for listening to the atheist Karl Rove on how to “use” the Christian Right for their own ill-gotten gains.

This should not be a political party bashing session. This man has a sexual addiction like all Child Sex Offenders. They come form all walks of life. This man just lives 2 lives, obviously He will mostlikely get out of this. Prosecuters WILL NOT touch him if there is no REAL evidence to back this story. Prosecutors want a witness, dna, or something that is very substatial. Not a her word against his… The prosecuters will not pursue this case with Judge or jury in the LOCAL area is there is NO evidence. They will let this man go back to the street. Even if they think, he is guilty. Prosecuters are like politicians..It’s all about a scoreboard of convictions, and they are selective about the ones that they will take. if it is an easy case with evidence, they’ll work at a prosecution. otherwise, OUR KIDS go w/o justice. Guilty, or not.

— Denise

If this guy is guilty then put him in jail until he rots. Why do people want to bring politics into this is beyond me. Why does it matter what party he’s with, how does that make any difference. A child may be effected by this man, not which party he belongs to. I believe people that what to blame a political party have nothing better to do. My prayers are with that child. When will people realize it starts with all of us? We choose who to elect but we don’t want to hold anybody accountable because most of us practice hear say politics.

Sheesh, you people ever heard of innocence until proven guilty?

If he is convicted, I agree he should be tarred and feathered, and sent away for a long long long time if not worse.

If he is shown to be innocent, the scums who have worked to sabotage a fine man should be made to pay!

I pray that the light shine on all these perverts every where including those in authority who sit as judges, attorneys and other court officials, politicians and businessmen, those posing as respectable citizens, I pray them out of hiding. There are many, many, many.

There are cases where judges and GAL’s here in St. Louis County Family Court have handed children over to known convicted child sexual abusers.

I pray for all the poor troubled foster children who have been placed in the homes of perverts whose cries go ignored as those of disturbed troubled teens and children, may their cries be heard and their abusers uncovered.

Seven years, this is the version of the Jessica law that yours truly, Gov. Matt Blunt accepted. Not the 25 year minimum for such crimes against a child. This man, if the charges are true deserves the 25 years. Don’t think for one second that this man has not sexually abused foster children if these charges are indeed true.

What are you talking about when you say “holier than thou” Republican’s? Because somebody is for law and order you would label them this way? If you want to condemn this man then do it for what he did (at this point allegedly).

BTW, there have been plenty of Democrat’s who have been involved in heinous acts.

D. Walker I believe, we need to get an organization in here to advocate for these children who make these claims. There is a 96% chance, she is telling the truth.. Politics is a BAD WORD in these cases. I have about as much respect for politicians as I do these WORTHLESS local prosecutors. The want convictions to preserve their BAD NAMES at election time. They DO NOT care about your children. Jefferson County Mo local paper did a HUGE article on these so-called prosecuters. Even if they feel, these scums are guilty, they will NOT pursue them if they can’t get any points out of it, fearing a jury trial will exonerate these twisted pieces of trash. Prosecuters will not try to convict any cases that may be of a challenge to them. I BET this guy will go free unless, this poor child can collect solid evidence against him. These election commercials that these candidates play to get elected, makes me sick! They could careless about your elderly parents that are victimized, or your child that was sexually molested. They’re out for themselves, and their political scoreboard. It’s a COMPLETE outrage

For reasons known only to the mainstream media, NO major outlet is touching the Edwards story. They CLEARLY have enough to go on - hush money, photographs, eyewitnesses, etc. It’s like when Newsweek didn’t want to move forward with the Clinton/Lewinsky story ten years ago, though they were the first to possess the information. They suppressed it, until the Drudge Report exposed it back in the dewey days of the internet - and everything Drudge reported was true.

If Edwards’ story WEREN’T true, he would be proclaiming his innocence on rooftops. Innocent people step out into the light; guilty people go into hiding and don’t answer questions.

There’s a reason why the name of John Edwards is no longer on Barack Obama’s VP list; now we’ll see if he’s stripped of an opportunity to speak at the Democratic Convention.

If there EVER was validation as to the remarkable bias of the mainstream media, it’s this story…

— John C
4:19 pm August 7th, 2008

If this was a Democrat, they’d be circling the wagons and telling people to wait until the legal process works its way out. So far this year, we’ve had one Democratic state senator get in an accident while supposedly drunk, nearly attack a cop in the ER, and somehow wiggled out of it. Another Democratic state senator was charged with using false identification in a casino, and has been seeking to have our state’s casino law overturned by the judge to prevent his criminal conviction. There’s only 14 Democrats in our state senate, so 1 out of 7 has faced criminal charges this year. Where’s the outrage, people?

Republican/Democrat criminals are criminals. Oh…actually they really don’t believe they did anything wrong. They’ll step away from the lime light like the scum bag who stalked the white house pagers. His whole body was in the cookie jar, he was sent to the nut farm for a few weeks and we haven’t heard anything further.

In our country it’s ok to rape children or cheat on your wife. If you have money or political clout you can buy yourself freedom. Kill an animal you just may get life.

I seriously doubt, he will have his day in court between his high priced attorneys, and LOUSY worthless prosecuters that are afraid of losing a case because of lack of evidence.. They will tell this girl, he is a horrible monster, but you have a bright future. We know he is guilty but unless we can come up with evidence or we can get him to do plea bargain, you’re out of luck you poor little girl.. Because we prosecuters have to win. Being that there is a CHILD WHO WAS RAPED and this child has identified the person who raped her as being Rep. Scott Muschany, for God’s sake let’s all agree that regardless of the political affiliation here, if true this man deserves to be forever separated from children and the Jessica Law needs to be revisited for hasher punishment than 7 years for rape of a child who is 14 years old.

Speak of “Political Party”, it was the Democrats who wanted the minimum 25 years jail time for rape against children and Republicans and especially Matt Blunt were against it, why?

Let me tell you why!!! It is because these ones who were against stiff punishment can identify with this type of crime and cannot imagine themselves being put away this long for such a crime because it is something that they all can see themselves doing if not have done themselves, is the only reason for such a mind-set.

The fact is this man is one of many who pose as respectable citizens, but are as sick and evil. They are as no better than the worst criminal hoodlum out there in the world and urban areas.

People need to snap out of their thinking of judging people to be honorable and good human beings due to their economic and professional status in life because most are only wearing masks.

Mr. Davison raises an interesting point which has yet to be answered, unless I missed something in the paper or in these posts: Why wasn’t he charged with rape?
I thought that was standard procedure in this type of crime against a minor, regardless of being consensual or not (NOT that I’m inferring it was the former!).
I guess an informed opinion by someone actually IN law enforcement or the legal industry would clear up this question.

Okay, reality check. Has he been convicted? He knew the mother, he probably knew the girl’s age. But did he do it, or is this an allegation?

When did we start assuming that if it is in print or reported we have the inside track to all relevant and accurate information?

Why would we want to promote a society that allows rumors, conjecture, unsubstantiated information to be used to convict a person?

No one is free of failure, regardless of their social status, wealth, education, or religous conviction.

But we have a constitution that guaranteed us the right to be innocent of charges until proven guilty. Proven in court, not popular opinion.

Maybe we should blog our way back to that.

— Lisa
6:37 pm August 7th, 2008

Why wasn’t he charged with rape? Unpleasant as many will find this statement-Consensual sex. In the state of Missouri no one can “claim” consensual sex 14 or under. So they charge the “adult” with other charges. Or the other answer, but not as likely, they didn’t have intercourse.

They can’t defend using “mistaken age” either any longer, which probably wouldn’t have applied here anyway.

But if he isn’t being charged with rape, then the girl was being probably categorized as “consenting”. She knew him, responded, etc…

Why don’t we talk about how sex is permeating our culture, how any one can search and see all manner of sexual deviant behavior from the privacy of their home. The problem isn’t out THERE folks, it’s in our home, what we watch, what we allow to slide.

We didn’t have this behavior when we were younger because you couldn’t access it as easily. You go to a website with others who are into the same things you are…how can you not start believing “well it might be okay to be interested in this?” “Others are…I’m not abnormal”…Videos, music, tv, marketing to our kids…it’s rampant.

If we want it to stop we have to stand up and change OUR behavior, find more like ourselves, and continue cleaning up what is being poured down our throats.

What were you thinking of at 14? I certainly wasn’t thinking about sex with an adult! Jr. High girls 12-13 bragging over their sexual encounters! Enough. We have to say enough and stand up.

First off, I am NOT defending Muschany, so don’t you left roots get all wacked out. However, where are the pictures? You keep asking for the pictures in Edwards case. Where is the proof? Edward’s lovechild’s birth certificate does not list a father. Why doesn’t he submit to a DNA test?
Lisa12 - are you as offended by this as you are about McCain or Gingrich?
Hogan - why aren’t you chiming in about your man?

I read the National Enquirer is going to release the John Edwards video after the Olympics ala just before the DNC convention. Funny thing is, the owner of the National Enquirer isn’t a right wing nut and this is not a “Rove” tactic, but a Hillary supporter.

Why don’t you Dems realize that this is why Edwards lost traction so fast and couldn’t get any money. Everyone knew he was a scumbag when this story came out the first time.

The Edwards story reminds me of the Clinton/Juanita Broderick story in 92 that NBC refused to release. They were terrified of the Clintons. You all didn’t believe the Clinton stories either and look what happened.

>Blunt also called on Muschany to resign, if the charges against him prove true.

This man Blunt is Missouri’s Governor?

If Muschany’s lawyer claims innocence, then the only way the “charges against him prove true” is with a conviction, and likely jail time. Common sense then says Muschany would be forced to resign no later than when convicted. But then it would seem the trial would occur sometime after the November election, and since Muschany is no longer running for reelection, Muschany would not be a member of the Missouri General Assembly at the time of his trial.

So Blunt’s comment really is meaningless, and frankly, an indication of his lack of understanding of the situation.

Kinder, on the other hand, did make a salient remark that, unlike Blunt, shows some respect for the Missouri House as an institution. Kinder said, “Today, I call on my fellow Republican leaders to join me in calling for Rep. Muschany’s immediate resignation from the Missouri House.”

Kinder wants an immediate resignation, Blunt’s comment was, like Blunt, rather Dull.

You are correct, we all have our right to our day in Court. But it is very telling when Peter Kinder calls for all other Republicans to join him in his call for Muschany’s IMMEDIATE resignation.

Does this mean Kinder believes Muschany is guilty? Or does this mean Kinder does NOT believe in the notion of innocence until proven guilty? Either way, Kinder’s comment appears to be disagreeing with the Constitution, which he should be protecting!

Lisa,

The problem of men raping children have been around a long, long time, and almost aways by people they know.

You sound like you are absolutely crazy. Where is the compassion for the children and outrage at adult men who rape children. Consent? You are nuts, no 14 year old consents to a 40+ year old.

Justice will come, even if it must come when these unchanged perverts are thrown into hell where they belong.

— D. Walker
11:37 pm August 7th, 2008

Here’s a question, and some may call it a NO BRAINER.
Just how many people out there really think that Michael Jackson molested these children? Consider the fact that the parents of these children that made those allegations of sexual abuse framed this man for his fortune? That could be VERY likely, too.. but just because he appears to have issues as most celebrities do does not make him guilty of anything, right? Keep this in mind when we start talking in favor of an accused Child Sex offender.

— Sheri

— suzyjax

He is still a representative until the swearing in of his replacement. That’s why they want him to step down. It’s disgraceful for him to even be in this position, whether he’s guilty or not. They want him gone. Period.

I don’t recall anyone criticizing the democrats when they called for Brad Robinson to resign after he was caught on tape, switching seats with his wife, while the guy he ran over was laying in a road. What’s that you say? No democrat called for Robinson to resign? My bad.

— Amazedbythelunacy
1:51 pm August 8th, 2008

Amazed, the difference is having a tape of the crime is indisputable evidence the accused is guilty.

In Muschany’s case, the charges are hearsay, “I believe what my daughter said” types of things. If Muschany is guilty and needs to step down, there should be proof HE is the one who did it. I saw a news article somewhere that there were 5 witnesses to the act. Getting to the bottom of this once and for all should not be that hard.
