Blunt, Kinder call on Muschany to resign
Calling the alleged actions of Rep. Scott Muschany, R-Frontenac, “reprehensible,” Gov. Matt Blunt and Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder issued separate statements today calling for Muschany to resign his seat in the House.
Muschany was indicted yesterday by a Cole County grand jury on a felony charge of “deviate sexual assault.” If convicted he could face up to 7 years in prison. Muchany is suspected of assaulting the 14-year-old daughter of a former House employee. Muschany and the victim’s mother were involved romantically.
“I was extremely troubled to learn that Rep. Scott Muschany is facing felony charges for sexual assault of a minor. This alleged misconduct is reprehensible and cannot and will not be tolerated,” said Kinder in an e-mailed statement. “Today, I call on my fellow Republican leaders to join me in calling for Rep. Muschany’s immediate resignation from the Missouri House.”
Blunt also called on Muschany to resign, if the charges against him prove true.
Muschany’s lawyer told the Post-Dispatch yesterday that the allegations are “false.”

Mr. Davison raises an interesting point which has yet to be answered, unless I missed something in the paper or in these posts: Why wasn’t he charged with rape?
I thought that was standard procedure in this type of crime against a minor, regardless of being consensual or not (NOT that I’m inferring it was the former!).
I guess an informed opinion by someone actually IN law enforcement or the legal industry would clear up this question.
Well said (as usual) Nick…
Okay, reality check. Has he been convicted? He knew the mother, he probably knew the girl’s age. But did he do it, or is this an allegation?
When did we start assuming that if it is in print or reported we have the inside track to all relevant and accurate information?
Why would we want to promote a society that allows rumors, conjecture, unsubstantiated information to be used to convict a person?
No one is free of failure, regardless of their social status, wealth, education, or religous conviction.
But we have a constitution that guaranteed us the right to be innocent of charges until proven guilty. Proven in court, not popular opinion.
Maybe we should blog our way back to that.
Why wasn’t he charged with rape? Unpleasant as many will find this statement-Consensual sex. In the state of Missouri no one can “claim” consensual sex 14 or under. So they charge the “adult” with other charges. Or the other answer, but not as likely, they didn’t have intercourse.
They can’t defend using “mistaken age” either any longer, which probably wouldn’t have applied here anyway.
But if he isn’t being charged with rape, then the girl was being probably categorized as “consenting”. She knew him, responded, etc…
Why don’t we talk about how sex is permeating our culture, how any one can search and see all manner of sexual deviant behavior from the privacy of their home. The problem isn’t out THERE folks, it’s in our home, what we watch, what we allow to slide.
We didn’t have this behavior when we were younger because you couldn’t access it as easily. You go to a website with others who are into the same things you are…how can you not start believing “well it might be okay to be interested in this?” “Others are…I’m not abnormal”…Videos, music, tv, marketing to our kids…it’s rampant.
If we want it to stop we have to stand up and change OUR behavior, find more like ourselves, and continue cleaning up what is being poured down our throats.
What were you thinking of at 14? I certainly wasn’t thinking about sex with an adult! Jr. High girls 12-13 bragging over their sexual encounters! Enough. We have to say enough and stand up.
First off, I am NOT defending Muschany, so don’t you left roots get all wacked out. However, where are the pictures? You keep asking for the pictures in Edwards case. Where is the proof? Edward’s lovechild’s birth certificate does not list a father. Why doesn’t he submit to a DNA test?
Lisa12 - are you as offended by this as you are about McCain or Gingrich?
Hogan - why aren’t you chiming in about your man?
I read the National Enquirer is going to release the John Edwards video after the Olympics ala just before the DNC convention. Funny thing is, the owner of the National Enquirer isn’t a right wing nut and this is not a “Rove” tactic, but a Hillary supporter.
Why don’t you Dems realize that this is why Edwards lost traction so fast and couldn’t get any money. Everyone knew he was a scumbag when this story came out the first time.
The Edwards story reminds me of the Clinton/Juanita Broderick story in 92 that NBC refused to release. They were terrified of the Clintons. You all didn’t believe the Clinton stories either and look what happened.
>Blunt also called on Muschany to resign, if the charges against him prove true.
This man Blunt is Missouri’s Governor?
If Muschany’s lawyer claims innocence, then the only way the “charges against him prove true” is with a conviction, and likely jail time. Common sense then says Muschany would be forced to resign no later than when convicted. But then it would seem the trial would occur sometime after the November election, and since Muschany is no longer running for reelection, Muschany would not be a member of the Missouri General Assembly at the time of his trial.
So Blunt’s comment really is meaningless, and frankly, an indication of his lack of understanding of the situation.
Kinder, on the other hand, did make a salient remark that, unlike Blunt, shows some respect for the Missouri House as an institution. Kinder said, “Today, I call on my fellow Republican leaders to join me in calling for Rep. Muschany’s immediate resignation from the Missouri House.”
Kinder wants an immediate resignation, Blunt’s comment was, like Blunt, rather Dull.
Are comments about John Edwards off-topic? I don’t see his name in the above article titled “Blunt, Kinder call on Muschany to resign”.
Just saying.

You are correct, we all have our right to our day in Court. But it is very telling when Peter Kinder calls for all other Republicans to join him in his call for Muschany’s IMMEDIATE resignation.
Does this mean Kinder believes Muschany is guilty? Or does this mean Kinder does NOT believe in the notion of innocence until proven guilty? Either way, Kinder’s comment appears to be disagreeing with the Constitution, which he should be protecting!
So Blunt and Kinder are calling for a state legislator to resign, AFTER the legislative session has ended and AFTER he’s already decided not to run for re-election.
Boy, that’s a tough stance!
Lisa,
The problem of men raping children have been around a long, long time, and almost aways by people they know.
You sound like you are absolutely crazy. Where is the compassion for the children and outrage at adult men who rape children. Consent? You are nuts, no 14 year old consents to a 40+ year old.
Justice will come, even if it must come when these unchanged perverts are thrown into hell where they belong.
