Throughout the Democratic and Republican conventions, we’ll be providing short profiles of local delegates.

Here is another “Delegate Spotlight.”

Name: Amanda MonteeAmanda Montee

Age: 21

Hometown: St. Joseph, Mo.

Political experience: Political science major at University of Kansas

Road to the convention: Was chosen as an at-large delegate at the state party convention in Columbia. Flew into Denver with her mother, Missouri Auditor Susan Montee, who is also a delegate. Though Amanda has not ruled out seeking office herself one day, she’s busy now applying for law school.

Convention highlight so far: Seeing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi at an “Unconventional Women” event. Montee is also impressed by Michelle Obama, who spoke Monday night. “Especially for someone who isn’t a politician, she is a really great speaker.”

Looking forward to: “Actually voting and representing the people who supported Obama in the primary.”

So her opinion is only politicians can be great speakers. Thanks mom.

I have neckties older than her.

Scott, please tell us you don’t wear 21 year old ties.

When will folks lose the “great speaker” tag? If the speaker walks around the stage, addresses the audience, and speaks without the aid of crutches like note cards and teleprompters, then you may consider them good speakers. If one stands at a podium and reads line by line a professionally prepared speech that has been rehearsed for weeks, I don’t qualify them as “Great Speakers.” That goes for both parties.

Cut the girl a break. She goes to KU… a burden she’ll be lugging for the rest of her life.

REAL Road to the convention: Riding mommy’s coattails.

Why is it always the same party elite that get to do this every 4 years? Isn’t the point of the elected delegates to show the face of the regular, rank-and file party voters?
Not someone whose only means of earning their way there was springing from the loins of a career politician?

Dear Whoa,

Did you attempt to be a delegate? Were you at the regional electoral process? What about the at-large state meeting that took upwards of twelve hours? Your post is evident of several possibilities:

1. You were were unable to be elected as a delegate. Look in your heart, reflect on what you’ve said, and stop being a sore loser. Even Hillary takes it better than you.

2. You weren’t there, and that’s most likely the case since less than 1% of the state’s population were. Where do you get off on criticizing others for being delegates? Judging by your ignorance, I wouldn’t be surprised if you were also unaware of the long process required to be a delegate. It requires charisma, speeches, and most importantly, votes. Ms. Montee had all of those when she gave her speech in front of the assembly stating that this is an election more than any other about change, diversity, and the youth. Compared to the other nominees, it was obvious that she should have been a delegate.

Or..

Option 3. You’re a Republican. Probably true judging by your baseless insult against Susan Montee for being a “career politician”(And I do wonder where you came up with this. Actually, I don’t. Stop reading thesource.com and think for yourself). You judge and insult others solely by the political party you’ve related to them. Stop killing America. Even if you’re not going to vote for Obama, you could still learn from his encouragement to build a better country by reaching across party lines and trying to see what kinds of positive political change we can make, instead of focusing on hateful, negative attacks. Which of those categories includes anonymous internet criticism attacking a 21 year old?

Instead of hating on young folks already involved in the political process, maybe you should spend your time encouraging ones that aren’t to go vote? Just an idea, though.

Heh, Susan Montee is a career politician? I’m from St. Joseph and remember about ten years ago when she had just run for city council. She’s in her late 40’s now. Not much of a career if you ask me.

Wish I didn’t have to start my career until I was 40.
