As a happy crowd chanted “Kenny, Kenny,” Hulshof took the podium at 10:50 p.m. to declare victory in the hard-fought GOP primary for governor.

Saying he had just talked to Sarah Steelman. Hulshof congratulated her for being a “courageous public servant” and “tenacious campaigner.”

Hulshof then began listing some of the themes he will stress in the general election battle with Democrat Jay Nixon. Hulshof began with his strongest defense so far of the 2005 cuts that lopped 100,000 adults from the state’s Medicaid rolls.

Hulshof said Nixon, who wants to reinstate the coverage, would return Missouri to “a broken and bankrupt Medicaid system. He’s perfectly willing to rob our classrooms” to pay for health care for the poor.

“You and I are going to tell him, that’s the wrong way, Jay,” Hulshof said.

The Hulshof versus Steelman battle of ads on KMOX was hard to take. I don’t want to listen thru anything like that again.

Yes, the advertising for this campaign was starting to get a little nasty on the edges.

I am a registered democrat, but for the primaries I will sometimes grab the republican ballot to vote AGAINST the kinds of republicans that I find personally displeasing. Sarah Steelman met all the criteria this year…and that’s why I cast my vote for Kenny Holshof. My vote for Kenny Holshof was certainly not a vote of confidence, but instead was an easy way to get rid of a very disgusting, pro-life zealot. Kenny is pro-life, too. But he’s a little more digestible to me than Ms. Steelman’s views.

My vote for Kenny assures that Sarah Steelman gets shown the door come inauguration day 2009. Now I can vote in the general…for Jay Nixon and Barack Obama, knowing that the State Treasurer’s office is up for grabs. :)

Way to go Kenny!

It never should have been the government’s job to take care of the poor and unfortunate. That’s the job of the church. But unlike the government, the church would also tell the poor and unfortunate that they should take responsibility for their choices and plan better. And the church would assist them in learning to fish, not just eating the fish. And the church offers hope, not just hype.
I’m tired of politicians who pander to the irresponsible, who take money from those who earned it to give it to those who spend it.
Tell “Wrong-Way-Jay” Nixon that before I let him take more of my hard earned tax dollars to give to persons who didn’t earn them, failed to plan for their medical needs, and instead capriciously wasted their savings buying addictions or cigarettes or cable TV or fast foods or any other frivolity, I’ll move to a state that rewards hard work and personal responsibility. Better yet, let Nixon move to another state. I hear Illinois is good at taking money from those who earned it and giving it to those who spend it.
True satisfaction comes to those who earn it by the sweat of their brow.
