In Denver, McMillan says he’s not running for mayor
If you haven’t already yet, check out Jo Mannies’ column today from the Democratic Convention, in which she unearths a gold nugget of City Hall news from Denver.
St. Louis License Collector Mike McMillan, seen perhaps as the most viable African-American potential opponent to Mayor Francis Slay, told Mannies that he is not running.
“I am very pleased to continue the work I’m doing as license collector,” McMillan said. “I am not running for mayor in this election cycle.”
“….in this election cycle.”
Interesting.
McMillan is in Denver as a delegate for Barack Obama; Slay is a delegate for Hillary Clinton.
The pair, Mannies reports exclusively, met for 45-minutes Wednesday in the atrium of the Missouri convention hotel.
Many at 1200 Market considered McMillan — an adept fundraiser who’s already run citywide — as the strongest possible contender for Slay in the March 2009 Democratic primary.
His decision leaves Circuit Court Clerk Mariano V. Favazza as one of the few serious candidate left.

Too bad. If he’s in cahoots with Slay, his chances of being Mayor ever just went way down.
I went to college with Mike and he has a degree from SLU. Not having a spouse has not done anything to hurt Mike to this point nor has it hurt Darlene Green, Gregg Daly, Robin Wright Jones, Jennifer Joyce before she got married, April Ford, Steven Gregali, Jennifer Florida, Dionne Flowers, Kacie Starr Triplett, Terry Kennedy, Marlene Davis, Rachel Storch and a host of others. The last time I ran into Mike and the subject came up about the Mayor’s race, he told me that he was very concerned over the racial divisions in St. Louis and how a racially divided campaign would hurt the city and not represent his track record of bringing people together. As a white resident of south St. Louis, I wish he would run anyway but most white people are apathetic about local politics and support Slay and don’t pay much attention to local news enough to know how bad he is which would have meant that he would have probably lost since the southside turns out more than the northside.
Getting a wife for McMillan may be a tough challenge.
I don’t think that it would be hard for Mike to find a wife. The woman that I see him with all of the time is very beautiful, intelligent and articulate. It may be a problem for you to get a wife Hitch.
McMcmillan isn’t one of slay’s mafia lap dogs, I know that for a fact.
He needs to run for the city’s sake!
