In West Va., Blunt rubbing elbows with VP contenders
At this very moment, Gov. Matt Blunt could be conversing with the next vice president of the U.S.
Blunt was in West Virginia this weekend, at the Southern Governors’ Association’s three-day conference, which ends today.
The Southern Governors’ Association includes several elected officials who are on the short list for vice-president. (Though, according to the association, only 10 of the 18 members were registered to attend the conference.)
Among those southern state officials generating veep buzz is new Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal — the only U.S. governor younger than Blunt — whose age, 37, and background may complement a John McCain ticket.
Also rumored to be a potential No. 2 is South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, a lesser-known but well-polished conservative.
On the Democratic side, Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine — a Mizzou grad who grew up in Kansas City — has apparently already begun the vetting process with the Barack Obama campaign.
While in West Virginia, Blunt himself issued a statement calling for Congress to expand oil drilling operations — a key GOP issue — which makes us wonder if he is eager to join his Southern colleagues on the vice-presidential watch list.

Wow - I hadn’t heard of this before now (other than the initial Romney whispers) - but if anything actually comes out of this meeting it would great. I really think Gov. Blunt would be an outstanding VP candidate. He’s a true economic conservative (three major tax cuts, saved state from a $1.1 billion deficit, etc.), is tough on illegal immigrants, reduced the size of the state gov’t and really made it streamlined, and really fits the mold of the Midwestern politician with state-level executive experience, which would be good for McCain (especially if Obama does go with Kaine). Would be quite the savvy move by McCain and Davis if they went with Gov. Blunt.
People would watch the vice presidential candidates debate and wonder ‘what were they thinkin’ electing this clown?’
also, Americans don’t like quitters. Blunt is just that…
run Blunt run! That guarantees a MO democratic victory!
I bet that’s not all he was rubbing if you catch my drift from all the rumors.
West Virginia……Isn’t that where they made the movie “Deliverance?”
I wonder if Blunt’s schedule will allow him to see where some of the more memorable scenes of the film were shot? Who can forget Ned Beatty and that squeel?
Bet Blunt and his buddy will have a great time out there together!
