McCain rally

O’FALLON — John McCain presented his new vice-presidential running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, to thousands of cheering Missouri supporters at a sun-drenched Sunday afternoon rally at the home of St. Charles County’s minor league baseball team.

“I have found the right partner,” the Arizona senator said at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. “She’s exactly who I need. She’s exactly what the country needs to fight the same old Washington politics.

Many in the crowd, which the campaign estimated at 23,000, seemed to agree, breaking out at one point in a chant of “Sar-uh, Sar-uh.”

McCain recounted Palin’s election as governor in 2006 and how she took on a “corrupt” political culture in her home state that had become a national disgrace. He also pointed out that Palin had vetoed “one big pork-barrel bill after another.”

“If you’re sick and tired of the way Washington operates, you need to be patient,” McCain said. “Change is coming, change is coming, change is coming.”

Palin also spoke about her record and said she had fought special interests, lobbyists, oil companies and “the good-old boy network.”

She also said she had opposed the often-criticized “bridge to nowhere” that an Alaskan in Congress had pushed for in an appropriations bill.Ron Bauwens, 58, a retired teacher from Weldon Spring, said he was impressed with McCain’s new running mate.

“The biggest thing I got out of that was Sarah. I think she can really pull it in for him.”"She’s going to be a bulldog.”

Some Democrats have attacked Palin’s experience. But Kathy Pfeffer, 56, of Fenton, said was impressed with her record of ethics reform and reducing government spending.

“She’s proven she can do it just as good as a man, if not better,” she said.

Why does Palin keep lying? She ran for governor supporting the bridge to nowhere, then kept the bridge funds from the federal government for other state uses. She’s a charlatan.

Time will tell on the choice. It is new and bold- I will give McCain that. But, as the election process moves on- her light will fade when people look at what she has done and where she has done it. She is an absolute panic pick.

Let’s see…for years we heard republicans refer to Hillary as: Billary and Hellary, said she was too up-front and agressive. Should keep her mouth shut, made fun of her thighs, her hair, her dress, etc.etc…

And the crowd yelled: Scare-ruh, Scare-ruh!

This pick shows McCain is unfit to be President and a total hypocrite for saying Obama is not qualifed. She is only two steps from the PTA.

This is the largest crowd that McCain has drawn isn’t it? 23,000? Maybe he and the Republicans can now stop whining about those town hall meetings that he has been trying to guilt rid Obama into like that overseas trip.

He’s a rising star among the Evangelicals and Conservative Right now. Hopefully the whining will stop now. But, just like everything else, this too will backfire because there is a story behind this lady and her family, including a story of her job as Governor, but it isn’t the one that Palin and the GOP and, Evangelicals are forcing down everyone’s throat (distortions) that we will all be hearing about soon. Nothing is ever as it appears to be with this bunch.

How ridiculous can people become, getting so excited about a woman that they no nothing about, kind of like single women who allow men into their and their children’s lives without really knowing anything about the fellow. Can be a very tragic thing, but it is always poor judgment.

I want to hear more about the ethics investigation into her attempt to fire her sister’s ex (who worked for the state government) just because he was getting divorced from her sibling. Not even two years into her first state wide office and she already has an ethics problem. Sounds a lot like the old gang, just on a smaller scale.
By the way, weren’t those “insiders” and “old boy” types she ran against Republicans. Same party, same results but on a pettier scale. That last quote, the one about “as good as a man”, seems to have more truth to it than McCain wants to admit.

Actually this is a joke! She can no way replace Hilary, which that is the scheme of things behind this. Country first? I say politics first, just as he accused Barack of only that was questioning Barack patriotism. A 72 years old pres. and he is on record as saying the only thing a VP does is check on the Presidents health everyday. Wake up America!!

As I heard somebody say, ‘It’s as though Karl Rove sat down with pen and paper and sketched out the PERFECT conservative nominee…(!)’

- She’s a hunter with a lifetime membership in the NRA.
- She regularly attends church.
- She fought corruption even within her own party.
- She knew her son would have Down Syndrome - and still chose life.
- She has a son who is headed to Iraq, but still supports the war.
- She has more executive experience than Obama and Biden combined.
- She sold the governor’s state plane because it’s a waste of tax dollars.
- Her husband is a union laborer.
- She wants to drill in ANWR.
- …and by the way - she’s a woman (!)

Judging by the earlier comments on this blog, the Democrats are going to have their hands full this November…the bile is already gushing forth!

It’s plain crazy to say that McCain chose Palin to “replace” Hillary! To say that just reveals the fear that the Dems are feeling because of the strength Palin adds to the McCain campaign. Hillary’s own party didn’t nominate her to run for President. On top of that, Obama didn’t even consider her for his VP so if the Dems are upset, they need only look at themselves. McCain/Palin ‘08!

When I heard about the rally at the River City Rascals ballpark, I was nervous because the facility, I believe, only holds about 5,000 people. I guess I never figured using the dugouts as platforms (!) and having people occupy the stands AND the field itself.

Judging from the photographs, the place was packed (!)

I was with my wife and another couple at ‘Annie Gunn’s’ restaurant during that time…and, ironically, Governor Matt Blunt walked in at about 6:30 to have dinner with some folks.

So McCain actually was smart enough to pick a strong woman as a running mate. More power to him. Barack had his chance to unite the Dems and cinch the election with Hillary and blew it. But what else would anyone expect from a self-absorbed, giant ego-maniac like Obama?

NO BRITNEY…NO PARIS…NO BARACK!!

Liberals aren’t panicked about anything. We’re horrified that McCain chose a running mate who has less experience that Mayor Slay to run this country in case something happens to him if he were chosen for office.

It’s also on public record that she endorsed the infamous “bridge to nowhere” From MSNBC:”The Anchorage Daily News quoted her on Oct. 22, 2006, as saying yes, she would continue state funding for the bridge because she wanted swift action on infrastructure projects. “The window is now while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist,” she said.” So she was before it before she was against it. After the public fuss was made, she dropped her support, but still accepted the funds. Also from MSNBC News: “The money that’s been appropriated for the project, it should remain available for a link, an access process as we continue to evaluate the scope and just how best to just get this done,” the newspaper quoted Palin as saying. “This link is a commitment to help Ketchikan expand its access, to help this community prosper.”

I just want her to stop lying about her support of this particular earmark.

T.R. Hughes Ballpark is a stadium in O’Fallon, Missouri. It is primarily used for baseball, and is the home field of the River City Rascals Frontier League baseball team. It originally opened in 1999. It has seating for 3,491 people, plus additional areas for 1,700 additional fans.

For the math challenged that come to about 5,100. How did the campaign come up with 23,000. Boy I’ll tell lying comes as easy as breathing to some.

This was not the VP (Veiled Prophet) count. It was shoulder to shoulder on the entire field and every seat was filled except the bleachers which were not open. I was there. I parked a mile away and had to walk to the stadium. It literally took an hour and a half to get out of the field where we parked. It was not well produced. I don’t know if they were surprised by the turnout or plannned it poorly, but they should have held it at Savvis or someplace where there was adequate parking. You also couldn’t hear the speakers very well.

I wonder if anybody knows that two months ago she didn’t even know what duties the office of vice president was responsible for? I’m pretty sure that there wasn’t even one woman in the GOP Presidential race. Yup, none. Now that a woman who wants creationism taught in public schools has been hand picked to be Johnny Boy McCain’s running mate, she is officially a member of the ‘good old boys’ club. The separation of church and state was very deliberate. Here’s to the Republicans! Three cheers for undoing everything good about this country! Hip hip hooray! Hip hip hooray! Hip hip hooray! — mcgee3
9:46 pm August 31st, 2008

As a 12-year Alaskan, I can tell you that Sarah Palin is the freshest, boldest face in our government in many years. In just 2 short years (actually just short of that), she has removed many of the problems the state has had (policies and personnel) and has turned a dream of the natural gas pipeline into a project that is finally moving forward. As far as “Trooper-gate” goes…the term “much ado about nothing” applies. It just seems the Anchorage Daily News and one of the local Anchorage talk show hosts seems to not like Sarah. What the heck…she is rocking the apple cart that they have been comfortable on for many years. As Alaskans we are proud of Sarah and feel she will surprise many people throughout the country once people get the opportunity to see and hear her. She’s not just a former beauty-queen…there is a lot of substance to her and I, for one, look forward to watching her in the next 66 days!

Regarding Palin’s “lack of foreign affairs experience”:

“Alaska is the first line of defense in our missile interceptor defense system. The 49th Missile Defense Battalion of the Alaska National Guard is the unit that protects the entire nation from ballistic missile attacks. It’s on permanent active duty, unlike other Guard units.

As governor of Alaska, Palin is briefed on highly classified military issues, homeland security, and counterterrorism. Her exposure to classified material may rival even Biden’s.

She’s also the commander in chief of the Alaska State Defense Force (ASDF), a federally recognized militia incorporated into Homeland Security’s counterterrorism plans.

Palin is privy to military and intelligence secrets that are vital to the entire country’s defense. Given Alaska’s proximity to Russia, she may have security clearances we don’t even know about.

According to the Washington Post, she first met with McCain in February, but nobody ever found out. This is a woman used to keeping secrets.

She can be entrusted with our national security, because she already is.”

johnh,

Are you 100% certain that Palin is not a BIG, BIG liar about some of those things that she is claiming?

In fact, Clark has not said NO as you have demanded, so I guess it is now on you to go through with your threat when you stated:

————————————-

Clark, Palin is not a liar. YOU ARE, or you are ignorant. Is that clear? Want me to prove that? I will. I suggest you say, “No”. or I WILL prove you are either ignorant or a liar.

————————————

You have got to be joking. My God, aren’t you being a little child like? I must admit you have given me a good laugh, lighten up!

In fact, a there was a little whisper in my ear telling me that the cards will soon come tumbling down, lies and all and it also told me that it would change nothing with you ones vote. Palin has gained the Republicans nothing because those Evangelicals, the James Dobson ilk and even the admitted atheists like yourself were going to vote for McCain no matter what because you guys would vote to place a Gorilla in office before voting to place Obama in office. This element will vote for the McCain ticket regardless of Palin and so was James Dobson even thought he claimed that he was on the fence. You o were always going to vote McCain no matter what. But there are not enough of you this time around to place this wreck into as was done with President Bush. The GOP will never fool so many people again.

The office is very stressful and neither McCain nor Palin is up for the job just as President Bush was not, but you people still are in denial of that fact and will continue to be in denial. In fact, the job is so stressful and Bush was so inept that he has fallen off the wagon, he was as drunk as a skunk at the Olympics, and it has been going on for a long time. And you people think that you have wisdom and discernment concerning anyone? You are always so WRONG.

Not so Insomniateloser,

Maj. Gen. Craig Campbell, adjutant general of the Alaska National Guard, considers Palin “extremely responsive and smart” and says she is in charge when it comes to in-state services, such as emergencies and natural disasters where the National Guard is the first responder.
But, in an interview with The Associated Press on Sunday, he said he and Palin play no role in national defense activities, even when they involve the Alaska National Guard. The entire operation is under federal control, and the governor is not briefed on situations.

— Richard

Clark, I am glad that you aren’t a liar, just ignorant of the facts., Let me explain in to you.

A bridge to nowhere would have been built from Downtown Anchorage across the ocean bay that would allowed residential developments to be made, and they would have had a 10 minuter drive into Anchorage to work, rather than a 75 minute drive around the bay. That was a great idea, I supported it. I don’t remember if Palin did, If the did, she damn well wasn’t Governor when that took place That was years ago.

When the plans were in their initial stage, they showed that the bridge and road would terminate where I owned 160 acres of prime land. I paid $500.00 per acre for it. I was offered $15,000 per acre for it. I asked for $20,000, and got it. I sold. In the ensuing hullabloo about the bridges to nowhere. I don’t know of one person, other than me, that made any money off it. Sarah and Todd certainly didn’t Their home was 26 miles away.

The other bridge to nowhere was was to be built 500 miles away I am sure I dont’t the need or lack of need for it. Sarah and Todd were farther away, and and at that time she was a member of the Wasilla City council. Not a governor.

Got it?

I have been tobacco free for almost two years after beginning the habit as a teenager in highschool which was many, many years ago. I am a grandparent today, to show you how long ago that was. It was the only drug or alcohol related problem that I have ever had to struggle with, thank God.

Yes, I am fixated on Bush being an alcoholic, was before he was placed into office and even more so since he has been President of the U.S. His bizaar behavior and deameanor has always had the little tell, tell signs of one not having full mental operation.

Are you so lacking of common sense that you really do not realize that you and every other citizen of the U.S. should have been fixated on the fact that Bush was an alcoholic even before voting him into office and why didn’t your ilk not understand that alcoholism should have been an immediate disqualifier for office of the President?

It doesn’t matter when one’s addiction begin, such as you mentioning that Bush’s addiction and problem with alcohol was when he was in college. Alcohol is a life-time addiction, Bush was a alcoholic in college and is one even this day and was one when you voted to place him into office both of his terms.

Troopergate!

This, at least, qualifies as a legitimate concern, at least legitimate enough that the state legislature has decided to investigate it. Supposedly Palin fired the commissioner of public safety because he wouldn’t fire her brother-in-law, a state trooper who had becomed estranged from Palin’s sister. Mike Wooten only got a suspension, and last month, she allegedly dismissed Walt Monegan over his handling of the case. Palin says that wasn’t the reason, the legislature noted that Monegan’s was a political appointment and he served at the pleasure of the governor, and they have also stated on the record that Palin has been so cooperative that they will not need to issue subpoenas — which hardly sounds like a cover-up.

So what did Wooten do, anyway?
Troopers eventually investigated 13 issues and found four in which Wooten violated policy or broke the law or both:

• Wooten used a Taser on his stepson.
• He illegally shot a moose.
• He drank beer in his patrol car on one occasion.
• He told others his father-in-law would “eat a f’ing lead bullet” if he helped his daughter get an attorney for the divorce.
Excuse me, but any of these four should have been a firing offense, let alone having done all four. He Tased his stepson? He threatened to shoot Palin’s father? No wonder the Palins hired their own investigator and pressed the issue so hard. But if this was the reason Palin cashiered Monegan, why did she bother to wait eighteen months after taking office to get rid of him?

Sounds in reading most of the liberal Dems on here are running scared-and understandably so. Let’s talk about all the votes Barrack bussed in during primaries. He stole the election from Hillary, can you say voter fraud. Read the blogs you will find out the truth on why so many Dems are pissed at Barrack. Is that the “Change” Barrack is referring too? Man, the name-calling on here…kinda disheartening.

That said, I’m a conservative, not a big McCain fan, but I have to admit Palin’s announcement shook me up in a very positive way. I’ve really been energized about the GOP ticket now.

To conservatives, I say it’s still really early to say they’ve got it wrapped up (same to Dems). We really need to see what happens and where this goes. I’m looking forward to a new speech from her at the convention, shortened or not.

To the Dems, I don’t know why you (on here and the pundints in the media) are so defensive about this pick. If it’s so bad, and you’re all so convinced Obama/Biden have it won, then just sit back and enjoy the train wreck.

I think it’s safe to say no one on here is going to change anybody else’s mind to come around to their thinking. However, I will say reading the back-and-forth on here is pretty entertaining. Continue…

Clark, I read the U.S.A. today article you referenced. I answered your question before you asked. Let me explain that again to you. The bridge across the ocean channel was a good idea. I supported that. I didn’t know if Sarah did or not. The bridge to the island that was some 500 miles south of us. Nobody supported except Ted Stevens, the Senator from, AK.

Why would Sarah have supported that one. There is no proof given that she did. The article didn’t say she did. Read it for yourself again. I am pleased to know that she supported the one from Anchorage across the Bay which is her home territory.

D. Walker, you need my attention. So I will rip you apart in my next post, momentarily.

The allegations against Palin’s brother-in-law had been investigated, and the appropriate action had been taken against her brother-law for whatever it was that were able to be proved. Palin and her family wasn’t happy with the outcome, they wanted his head, his lively hood. It was an abuse of power if the allegations against Palin are true.

STOP JUSTIFYING HER ACTIONS! At least wait until the investigation is over. The one thing that is certain is that she certainly showed poor judgment in the matter. Domestic family issues can get heated but, having a man to be fired because of that crap, if true, was unprofessional and unethical.

— D. Walker

From a real Journalist:

When asked about criticisms of Sarah Palin’s readiness to serve as president, McCain responded: “If they want to go down that route, in all candor, she has far, far more experience than Senator Obama does.”

Set aside the bravado. Can McCain possibly believe that? And if he does, what are we supposed to think of his own fitness to serve? Sen. Obama is certainly new on the national scene. But he’s serving his fourth year in the US senate. He’s run a successful national primary campaign. He’s deeply versed on all the relevant policy issues. Palin has been the governor of one of the smallest states in the country (by pop.) for 18 months. As recently as 2006, she said she hadn’t focused enough on Iraq to have an opinion one way or another about the surge. Even now, her off-hand comments about Iraq are completely at odds with Sen. McCain’s.

Getting into a discussion about the relative qualifications of the two individuals is too silly to waste time on. But it says a lot about McCain that he says it.

Ben O - Believe me, we are not voting for the bast candidate this time around, just the lesser of the two evils. And seeing what little substance has come out of the Obama camp, I think any rational person would have to vote for McCain. I’m an independent, but I think it is just that important this time around to keep Obama as far away from the White House as possible given his positions (and/or lack thereof).

I know , I know facts are stupid things to republicans

So let’s put this all together.

We rely on elected officials not to use the power of their office to pursue personal agendas or vendettas. It’s called an abuse of power. There is ample evidence that Palin used her power as governor to get her ex-brother-in-law fired. When his boss refused to fire him, she fired his boss. She first denied Monegan’s claims of pressure to fire Wooten and then had to amend her story when evidence proved otherwise. The available evidence now suggests that she 1) tried to have an ex-relative fired from his job for personal reasons, something that was clearly inappropriate, and perhaps illegal, though possibly understandable in human terms, 2) fired a state official for not himself acting inappropriately by firing the relative, 3) lied to the public about what happened and 4) continues to lie about what happened.

These are, to put it mildly, not the traits or temperament you want in someone who could hold the executive power of the federal government.

–Josh Marshall

— Richard
11:39 pm August 31st, 2008

Unfortunately for the critics, this argument doesn’t hold water, either. All four principals are running for the highest executive position in the federal government — indeed, the position in charge of the entire executive branch. How much executive experience does Obama have? None; he’s worked in corporate law, community organizing, and has eleven years as a legislator at various levels. Biden? He’s been a lawyer for three years and a Senator for 35 years, and has no executive experience at any level of government.
McCain at least has executive experience as a squadron commander in the US Navy, but Palin has the actual executive track record that the others lack. She has governed Alaska for 20 months, negotiated a pipeline deal with Canada (which gives her more formal diplomatic experience than either Obama or Biden), was commander-in-chief of Alaska’s National Guard, and so on. Even her more local-level experience is more applicable than Obama’s: she served two terms as mayor, an executive position, cutting taxes and running a small city. Obama served in the state legislature, with no executive responsibilities at all.

— stlpatriot
11:53 pm August 31st, 2008

“She cleaned up the corruption in the Republican party in Alaska.”

Is this the reason Sen. Ted Stevens, who is under indictment, has to conduct his trial in Washington, DC, and not his home state as he requested?

Remember, McCain, too, was under investigation by the Senate for corruption as one of the Keating Five at one time.

If this is clean politics, give me some more smoke-filled rooms.

Actually, McCain’s nomination of her, and her creationist claptrap means the Reps will have one less vote this year. There were other Rep Veep nominees whom I might have considered to sway me to vote Republican. However, I will NEVER vote for anyone who sincerely believes that creationism belongs in a science classroom. Period. I accept that she has the right to believe as she wishes, but not to foist her evangelizing beliefs on kids in the public school system.

Maj.

Teresa,
Whether you believe in creationism or a big bang? I would argue that it takes greater suspensions of thought, to think that the universe happened by chance. Seeing as it’s statistically impossible. I would rather, admit that my humility and concede that there must be a designer behind this fantastic universe.

But either way, both are opinions. Until the idea of a creator has been scientifically disproved (which hasn’t happened yet) we must continue the debate. Trying stop debate hasn’t worked in any Communist country, so why should we try? Stop acting like your beliefs are the only ones that matter. Using the scientific model, you must disprove before you can claim anything as fact.

But keep looking for the truth it’s out there :)

I totally agree, with Richard, she abused power for personal reasons….we’ve seen 8 yrs. of this all ready (our prices at the pump for Bush’s pockets!!!!!!!!!) I am so sick of hearing about Hillary. So soon we all forget the Whitewater ordeal and the fact that the only political experience she had was the fact that her husband managed to land the Presidency (of which he made a mockery). Then she moves to New York to become a Senator only a few short years ago. Why didn’t she run in the state she was from? Give me a break.
Sarah has at least been Mayor and then Governor of the state she actually resides in. I think she will bring fresh ideas and can help bring this country back in order. McCain and Palin have my vote.

Arguing about Palin is ridiculous. Many voters make up there mind on a whim, or on pre-concieved notions. There will be just as many moderate republicans jumping ship because of palin, as people going to McCain because of Palin. I am a 30 something male(Independent), and when McCain got the nomination in March, I was happy I liked Obama, and I respected McCain because of his williness to buck his party. But as the campaign went on I came to dislike McCain, because of the way he ran his campaign (piss poor). I disliked Hillary for the same reason. If you can’t run your campaign well how can I trust you to run the country. Then I looked at his voting record, and found out that he might publicly disagree with his party, he rarely votes against them over the last 10 years (not much of a Maverick). Also, He votes against veteran rights 80% of the time. I am not a veteran, but they will always deserve our support, and I can not stomach a politician who does not support them. The third thing happend over the last few months. I am a political Junkie and look at all the news channels and read lots of sites. I have personally seen (There is video evidence on U-Tube too) McCain state a stance one day and litteraly Deny he said it the next on three seperate occasions. Either he thinks we are idiots and ouright lied, or he really forgot he said it, which could be connected to age related Memory issues. Now the Palin pick was the final nail. I am a religous person, but Palin is an Extremist. She disagress with Abortion even in cases of Rape and Incest, she believes in creationism being taught in classrooms, she is against stem cell research, she herself stated a month ago she had no Idea what a VP does, and she stated she has no intrest in Foreign Affairs, and she agreed to run with McCain who voted against funding for Katrina related bills, and many Womens rights. On the flip side Obama has run one of the largest campaign in history, and done it effectivly, and within Budget. He votes for Veterans Benefits/Rights, he picked someone that disagreed with him and called him out in the primaries, and that person is without question qualfied to be president if something happens to Obama. For those who compare’s Obama’s and Palins experience, ask yourself this question. If you were hiring for a job, and you have two people with the same experience (They both have the same time in elected office) You would then look at education. Obama would most likely be your hire, because of the education. Now After I did my research I decied on Voting for Obama, and the Biden Pick solidified it for me. Please all of you do your own research and come up with an informed opinion. Don’t just go off of Fox News or MSNBC and remember when you have extremes the truth always tends to fall in the middle.

Please allow me to remind you that your candidate of choice threw his first wife Carol and the children that he had with her under the bus in a big big way? He rewarded the woman who limped to the mailbox every single day of the five years that he was imprisioned in Vietnam hoping for some word of his survival by replacing her with a younger, prettier, healthier and wealthier model named Cindy (who incidently had her own substance abuse problem with prescription painkillers). Of course that was a result of the stress she was under due to the Keating Five scandal. By the way you are about as independent as my 8 month old son.

I find some of the comments on this board extremely comical, but seriously scary!! How much brainwashing have you endured when you see Obama as a “safe” choice. Before you throw your vote in this dangerous direction, research his background. Additionally, he and Biden are two of the MOST liberal in the Senate.

On a happier note, McCain & Palin are the perfect combination of experience and knowledge and I can’t wait for them to take office!! They balance one another out and that they will truly make this country stronger economically, strengthen our military defense and take the proper steps to improving our environment (to name a few).
