The Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) and the campaign of presumptive presidential nominee Barack  Obama plan to announce shortly that Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., will be among the prime time speakers on the convention’s opening night.

McCaskill will join U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Craig Robinson, Michelle Obama’s brother, to address the convention on Monday, Aug. 25, the first night of the four-day extravaganza in Denver, Col.

Obama’s sister Maya Soetoro-Ng, also will play a role in the convention.

The choice of McCaskill, one of Obama’s national co-chairs and a favorite campaign surrogate, appears to signal one of the ways she’s being rewarded for her early and outspoken endorsement of his candidacy.

What’s unclear is whether her address will end up on prime time TV or on cable.

According to the release, the Monday night theme is One Nation. The headline speaker is Michelle Obama, the candidate’s wife.

McCaskill and Pelosi “will speak late in the program about the changing Democratic Party and the efforts of leading Democrats to reach out to Independents and Republicans to get the country moving in the right direction,” the release says.

Monday night will also feature a tribute to Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., who is battling cancer and is close to Obama.

More from the release:

Craig Robinson, Michelle Obama’s brother, will introduce his sister, who will be Monday’s headline speaker in prime-time. As the person who knows him best, Michelle will talk about the Barack Obama she knows and loves, the values that shape him and why she believes he’ll be an extraordinary president. In an effort to highlight the setting of the Convention and the importance of the Mountain West to the Democratic Party, Monday’s program will also feature a video segment introducing delegates and other Convention attendees to the natural beauty and strong voices of leadership in the region.

Well, then…I sure hope someone coaches ol’ girl on her hair, makeup and attire. Lawd knows that some of her appearances on cable in the past several months have been downright embarrassing, what with her outfits that look like they came off the rack of the J. C. Penney in Rolla FORTY years ago!!

OMG!

I hope she doesn’t embarass herself or Missouri with some idiotic comment. She says some of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard on tv and radio. A real lightweight McCaskill and one who is ever so impressed with herself. I hope she’s a one termer.

This is great for Missouri. I think she’ll make a great speech and shine a positive light on our state…showing that we’re not a bunch of dumb backwoods folk. That we’re interested in a new direction for our state and for our Nation…moving forward, not back…and celebrating revival. What I like about her is that she talks about the future of our country rather than spending time insulting her opposition(unlike Kit Bond and the like)

She is a two-faced light-weight who is not to be trusted. She will be yet another weak link in the Democrats effort. When will the Democrats PLEASE PLEASE show some strength and character?

It’s so befittng that Claire should speak at NObama’s coronation as they are both enemies of democracy, Just Say NObama, NO Deal, PUMA!

I want to hear what she has to say, not particularly how her accent sounds. If that were the case, I’d never listen to GW or a lot of our Missouri pols on both sides of the aisle. Clothes and an accent do not define a person. She is a hard-working woman who works for her constituency. I am looking forward to hearing what she has to say. Sounds like some of these comments are from people who have ideas of what makes a perfect politician and anyone who doesn’t meet those requirements are ridiculed. I prefer to hear what is said and interpret that rather than what a person sounds or looks like. I agree with “Independent…” when she said “she talks about the future of our country rather than spending time insulting her opposition(unlike Kit Bond and the like)” YOU GO CLAIRE!

Claire is amazing. She agrees to run state wide again after her worst (and only) loss. She figures out just what went wrong with that campaign and makes the smart adjustment. She heads to Washington, auditor’s cap in hand, and takes on the Pentagon and every other government agency that wastes our money. She stands up for her own beliefs and endorses a candidate for President that few believed would win, and then continues to work hard for him. Oh, and did I mention that she has had so many media appearances because she is Good at presenting the message? Believe me, national media, particularly TV, does not put folks on just for the fun of it. Claire is a terrific Senator, a hard worker who really studies the issues, and asks real tough questions in committee hearings (believe me, I watch CSpan waaaay too much) and I’m proud I voted for her. She still insists that friends and strangers call her Claire, and from what my friends around Springfield tell me, she has won the admiration of a whole lotta folks that were determined to be against her…..given her common sense, real person way of speaking, I can’t wait to hear her give a shout out to MO from Denver.

The real upshot of the announcement is that McCaskill is no longer being considered for veep. You don’t schedule your veep candidate on Monday.

Missouri has your back, Claire - pay no attention to the shrieking and wailing of the pathetic dead-enders who refuse to break free from the Grand Oil Party. Give ‘em hell….on second thought, give ‘em the Truth, and they’ll THINK it’s hell!

“…pay no attention to the shrieking and wailing of the pathetic dead-enders who refuse to break free from the Grand Oil Party…”

Are you kidding me? McCaskill has voted against progressive values time and again to protect her own career. I’m not interested in protecting her career…she is the one that has aligned herself with the Grand Oil Party time and again. She should remember, many people didn’t vote FOR her as much as they voted AGAINST Talent. I pray a TRUE PROGRESSIVE DEM challenge her in a primary fight.
