Pam Fichter, president of Missouri Right to Life, is emailing out copies today of her group’s defense against the GOP critics who have been blasting MRL’s endorsements and issue stances.

Right to Life has been at odds with some Republicans, notably Gov. Matt Blunt, for several years. Blunt, Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder and others locked horns with MRL over their support, and the group’s opposition, to Amendment 2 in 2006.

In the process, some Republicans have encouraged another anti-abortion group with closer ties to Blunt, Missourians United for Life.

Too bad Missouri Right To Life has to discredit Republicans who are right to life, just to please the Democrat elements in their organization. This isn’t about political parties, it’s about protecting life. Wake up MRL your base is leaving you, along with the Susan B Anthony List. You forgot what the MAIN THING is.

By the way there is more to this story than reported here, MRL is twisting votes to satisfy the agenda of liberals sitting on their board.

I agree. I will never participate in another life chain, or do anything that involves MRL again. They would rather elect a for sure anti-life legislator over a pro-life legislator that just happen to disagree with them one time. They are a farce.

Pam Fichter has tarnished MRLs reputation. Its time for her to go.

Let me wrap my head around this. Missouri Right to Life says its opposed to abortion and clonin/perceived cloning and people have a problem. I commend them for taking a stand for their cause. Don’t worry about Kinder; he’ll be okay, he should win easily. Just a thought! We all know that tigers can bite us, no matter how much you think you’ve tamed or appeased him. If you’re brave enough to walk in among tigers; you cannot be mad when the tiger bites you. In essence, you know the nature of the beast; you cannot be mad at it for being what it is.

Matt Blunt is the first pro-life governor in Missouri since 1993 and has passed significant legislation on pro-life issues, so I think this criticism is very misplaced. He recently boosted the funding of the Alternatives to Abortion program from $1.4M to $1.9M and also created a 17 member cmte on foster care.

His record on pro-life issues is the strongest of any Missouri governor in a long time.

This group also said Jane Cunningham wasnt pro-life. Please that women in as far right as you get. I agree Fichter has done the pro life community a disservice by playing politics one too many times. Time for her to packit up if MRL has any chance at surviving, they have really become a joke of a group.

MRL is already a complete joke thanks to Pam Fichter. MRL is a vindictive backwards group. Simply look at what they did to Onder whom is one of the group’s former directors! They may have won the race, but it’s certain they will lose the war. 8 years ago Cunningham would have lost without MRL’s endorsement. Now though she won easily without it. GOOD RIDENCE MRL

Missouri right to life is meaningless to me. Look at the Cunningham vs. Loudon race where MRL endorsed a candidate who had no record over a candidate whom introduced pro-life legislation. On top of that Rep. Cunningham won by a large margin. Could this be because MRL spent more time defending the wrong politician when they should be defending LIFE?? They need to go back to the simple task of doing what their organizations title says, defend RIGHT TO LIFE! Until this organization gets its act together they mean as much to me ice cubes in the winter.

As a Pro choice person I will just say I am glad to see so many people upset at MRL, which has seemed like an effective group to me. That being said, I feel the need to defend them a little (recognizing that my opinion means little to them).
Amendment 2 was a big issue to them and seeing as how it barely passed I can understand their frustration with Blunt for not coming out against it. He might have been the difference between winning and losing and holding him accountable seems like the right thing to do.
So far as appeasing Democrat elements in their group, I think that is an important thing to do. The life agenda will never move past where it is now if life organizations are seen (or act) as partisan groups. If they life group can seperate themselves from the pro war, pro death penalty, anti health care Republicans, they might win me and other true pro lifers to their cause. If they had aggressively supported a Governor (or support Lt Gov Kinder) who cut health care, including prenatal care, they would have lost all credibility with any moderates, which I think is the majority.

NARAL rated Pro-Choice Senators plus 08 MRL rating
Jolie Justus 70
Charles Graham 81
Joan Bray 65

Previously MRL rated prolife legislators plus 08 MRL Rating
Delbert Scott 30 (07 Sponsor and handler of HB 1055)
Jason Crowell 30 (06 Sponsor SJR 43 banning all abortions)
Robert Mayer 29 (08 Sponsor SB 1058 related to coerced abortions)

Justus, Graham, and Bray supported Amendment 2 (pro-cloning)
Scott, Mayer, and Crowell opposed Amendment 2 (anti-cloning)

MRL’s logic is baffling!
