Mo Right to Life defends record, jabs certain legislators
Pam Fichter, president of Missouri Right to Life, is emailing out copies today of her group’s defense against the GOP critics who have been blasting MRL’s endorsements and issue stances.
Right to Life has been at odds with some Republicans, notably Gov. Matt Blunt, for several years. Blunt, Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder and others locked horns with MRL over their support, and the group’s opposition, to Amendment 2 in 2006.
In the process, some Republicans have encouraged another anti-abortion group with closer ties to Blunt, Missourians United for Life.

I’ve watched MRL in action in Jefferson City for years, and have been appalled at their lobbying tactics.
The craziest is the way they punch their best and most loyal friends and pro-life advocates in the face time and again.
Numerous people have asked me about MRL endorsements/ratings/etc, and I have told them that MRL has such a messed up way of rating candidates that unless one is an expert or scientist on dissecting their scorecards, one would be better off ignoring the MRL opinions and endorsements and finding pro-life info on legislators elsewhere.
I am personally strongly pro-life, but I find MRL’s tactics to be disgusting.
Although I supported a different candidate in the 9th district race over Bob Onder (for reasons other than pro-life), I found MRL’s endorsement of someone other than Bob to be a new low for MRL.
Bob would have been one of the strongest voices of the pro-life movement in D.C. There’s nobody who better understands MRL’s new pet issue - embryonic stem cell research, and there’s nobody who is more committed to preventing it than Bob Onder. There is no legislator in Missouri who has dedicated more of their life to pro-life causes then Bob Onder.
For MRL to work against one of the pro-life movement’s most dedicated voices is unthinkable to me. Again, I’m not an Onder supporter personally, for other reasons, but I found the 9th congressional district race to be a flaming example of what people have begun to realize is wrong with MRL.
I’m glad people are finally starting to see how their organization believes that they are invincible and can distort anyone’s values and still maintain credibility.
Pride comes before a fall.
“Tim Hogan” — Where do you get the idea that Blunt isn’t the most pro-life governor we’ve had in a long time? Can you name another governor in the last two decades that has advance the pro-life platform like Blunt?
Get real.
Allison, I can’t think of many people that disagree with you. Anyone who watched that race unfold saw the true face of MRL. MRL is out to kill and assassinate any candidate who they believe crosses them. On another note it disappoints me that you are reading the comments that people make. Keep in mind the internet it filled with people who get mighty mean and very brave… behind a keyboard.
Pam, you should be ashamed that you wait until AFTER THE PRIMARY to justify your betrayal. It’s just cold and down right malicious to kick Rep. Onder when he’s down. Your incoherent letter (put out by your lawyer) does nothing but show how unorganized, cold, and politically inept your group truly is. I’d imagine that the clock on your career is ticking. If it’s not, I’ll do my best to get it started!
MRL is now a four-letter word J-O-K-E.
They haven’t really done anything to get anything past the past few years. The pro-life legislators - most of whom now held in disdain by MRL - passed these measures because they were pro-life and in spite of the idiots at MRL.
Allison Onder is exactly on point. Bob Onder has done more for the pro-life community than Blaine Luetkemeyer could ever hope to do. That doesn’t mean Blaine isn’t pro-life but for MRL to make the call they did was ludricous.
Onder led the effort against Amendment 2 - Blaine didn’t. But when MRL comes up with a goofy - way off base interpretation of their views on Amendment 2 and what can and can’t be done - and then didn’t get the support for their goofy views they got mad. Now they support pro-choice candidates over pro-life candidates.
It will be my pleasure during the next session as I am talking to legislators to remind them of how unreliable - undependable - unethical - and hypocritical MRL really is. I would like to claim at the end of the session that I had an impact on degrading their credibilty but they have done such a good job on their own I won’t be able to claim much credit.
And for the braniacs who don’t have any substance to their arguments other than attempting to claim that I am someone I’m not and who don’t know their you know whats from a hole in the ground - thanks. You help make my case.
Missouri Right to Life is a right-wing wacko group that can not back up their stance with a Biblical reference. When does the Bible say life begins? Not at conception as claimed by this organization. MRL does not know what stem cell research is and what types of cells are used. Their ignorance is spouted from pulpits to a flock that will not think for themselves.
Gov. Blunt has fought strongly to protect pro-life values in our state. I don’t see the issue here. I commend his involvement in foster care issues and his enactment of creative committees to properly address these always tenuous issues.
