That’s right: Bill Haas, Democratic nominee for Congress

Are Bill Haas and Capitol Hill made to be together? Bill Haas

We’ll see, but for now, what we know is this: Haas won a crowded Democratic primary tonight, and will face incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Todd Akin in the November general election.

This is Haas’ first victory at the ballot box since he left the School Board in 2005, and it’s not for want of trying — Haas has run for state representative, alderman and mayor in the last four years.

Haas’ victory might stir some talk about the rule that requires candidates for Congress to live in the state — but not necessarily within district boundaries.

While the Second District stretches through St. Louis, St. Charles and Lincoln Counties, Haas calls the Central West End home.

Ramsfan….great idea about Pentland running as an independent! Hope this gets some traction….hope some of the Dem party regulars are reading this.

I think the rule is 4,600 max per person but only half can be spent on the primary. The reason Delear and Garman got the township endorsements was because they could not look past the pro choice issue. This is a non issue to a US representative but would have been a major issue against Akin. Marian, if you look at the cash raised on Byrons report 30% was in kind and part was the 4,600 rule. I feel sorry for the guy, he doesn’t own anything but a good piece of debt on an ill fated campaign. He always said it was the West Co Dems who encouraged him. I’m sure they’ll help pay down the debt. Back to our problem I like the Westfall idea.

clyn, St. Louis co will have a break down for each precinct and the number of votes cast for each candidate. We can compare those to the previous years and see if there is a pattern. If we can find that same information from the other counties it will help to establish the pattern. Unfortunately they could just be consistently uninformed voters who vote for the name that rings a bell. Similar to a punch drunk boxer.

I’d be willing to be part of an effort to do that….how would we make this happen?

Dear anyone who stumbles across this,

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Tony Blecher and I am Bill Haas’ illegitimate son. I stumbled across this website tonight, and was amazed at all the comments as I began to read them. About halfway through the pages of comments I had to stop. I don’t know if it was all the arrogant and snide remarks my father made, or all the rude albeit comical insults thrown at him that made me skip to the end, but here I am. I want to throw my two-cents in. Please forgive me if my points aren’t in logical order or if my blog isn’t grammatically correct. My father has already corrected others’ grammar.

Let’s see… First of all, congratulations dad for making it this far. I haven’t been able to tell you that, because we aren’t in contact. Who cares if you won because of name recognition? You won didn’t you? Good luck in the general. It’s not going to be easy. First, it is in a republican district right? Oh, and you’re facing an incumbant. I believe incumbants have a pretty good track record in elections. Don’t quote me on that.

OH YEAH, I read earlier that you said something about you’re only regrets in life had to do with some of your pets. What about your relationship with me? Do you regret there being a lack there of? Or am I regret? God knows I was what some people call “an accident.” I believe you wanted my mother to have an abortion. Well thank God she didn’t cause then I wouldn’t be here today. Thank you mom. I guess that’s why I am prolife.

Ok, a little about me. I just graduated high school, and I’m going to Lindenwood University in 2 days on a full scholarship. I’m currently in the process of becoming a student minister at my church as well. I’m not trying to brag or anything, I just think I’ve done pretty well for myself without the help of my father.

I think this blog has become a bit lengthy and I doubt many people will read it, but I just want people to know that when I move into Lindenwood, that puts me in the 2nd district. I don’t know who I am going to vote for, but it probably won’t be my dad. Maybe Pentland will run as an independant (I heard he’s prolife). I can only hope.

Tony,
I knew about you for several years and would have never said anything to protect your feelings. It is one of the reasons I have so little respect for your father. Any man who would not care for his child is no man at all. You are a brave and sucessful young man and will go far in life. Your Mother must be quite remarkable.

Hi Tony, Your dad has always mentioned you and it was courageous of you to set the record straight. I think your situation speaks for itself, so I won’t make any judgments here. Unfortunately, I think your dad is being used by the Republicans and if he were truly a qualified candidate who stood a chance of winning, we’d all be supporting him right now. Please know, despite the harsh words you’ve seen here, our words mean we care about the future of this country, and you are part of that future. Your dad is an intelligent man, and you are too. Congratulations to your mom for raising a good son and best wishes. Bill, I hope you are reading this and maybe this will be one good outcome of this election for you and Tony.

WOW. This is amazing. Tony you are a brave young man and it is nice to meet you. Bill maybe the legions of pro choice women that supported you should meet this young man.

Tony, my son,
A reporter called my attention to this post, and I am glad he did; I would have missed it. I stopped reading about post 50, or whevever my last one was; wasnt enjoying it and didnt see what purpose would be served. It seems you felt the same way; must run in the family.
I thought I should acknowledge your words here briefly, and the rest by email to you; hope you still check your email.
First, I’m sorry you had to read these; they were painful for me, and I’m sure somewhat for you too to know that at least a few bloggers dont seem to respect me very much; I like to think it’s Republicans afraid I’ll beat Akin, or supporters of the candidates I beat (trounced seems inappropriate, however true; :))
I like to think you know me well enough to know that much, very much, of what they say about me is not true.
thank you for your kind words and wishes.
and you’re right, I’ve always regretted and still do, that we havent had a better relationship; I’ve thought I’ve done my best, and it usually takes two to have a relationship, but am very open to suggestions of how I, we, might do better. Godwilling, plenty of time to do better, and be closer. I think you’ve always known how much I love you, and I am grateful for that. And I am always open to meeting, visiting, dialoging.
I’ve always loved you very much, always will, and regardless of the facts of the conception, Mom and I started meeting regularly early to get to know each other better than we already did, be good friends if not necessarily romantic partners, and the best parents we could be. Mom obviously succeeded, and I guess I’m still working on it.
To say I’m proud of you implies you have an obligation to live up to my expectations, and I dont think that should be true for children. I think you should try to live up to your own expectations for yourself, and it seems like you are doing great. You’re smart, personable and kind; you’d make a great candidate. I’m in even more trouble than I already seem to be, if you ever decide to run against me. Wouldnt that be something when I’m up for reelection in 2010; I think you have to be 25, so maybe I’ll squeeze in two terms before you run against me. You’re welcome to succeed me. I know you’d be great. The only thing I wish you could do a little differently is cut me a little slack when I’m human and not perfect and dont relate to you as well as I should or you’d like.
thanks again for writing, and now I’ll write you on your email.
and to you and others, for the record, I have not posted here in other than my own name, and wouldnt.
love Dad

I doubt people would have crossed over in a race where Akin won by 25% last time and miss the chance to vote on the Steelman-Hulshoff contest; and the same number of Republicans about voted this time as two years ago, so conventional wisdom is no cross-over. So you bloggers, and you know who you are, have kept your record of being 100% wrong on facts, ideas and issues intact. :) No way to know for sure, but I’m thinking I was the second choice of the majority voters of the other candidates and would have beaten any of them one on one; also glad I didnt have to find out the hard way that I was wrong. There is a voting system where you throw out the lowest vote getter and reapportion their votes among their second choices that I think is good and is used in some California counties; I would have be willing to have that kind of vote in my election. But since we didnt and I won, I think I’ll now win the general election. Wont shut up the chorus of Hitchcock-like baying valkeries and braying donkeys (I guess Elephants more appropriate, but the metaphor just doesnt work as well that way), of course, but we’ll all feel alot better about ourselves, including them.
