That’s right: Bill Haas, Democratic nominee for Congress
Are Bill Haas and Capitol Hill made to be together?
We’ll see, but for now, what we know is this: Haas won a crowded Democratic primary tonight, and will face incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Todd Akin in the November general election.
This is Haas’ first victory at the ballot box since he left the School Board in 2005, and it’s not for want of trying — Haas has run for state representative, alderman and mayor in the last four years.
Haas’ victory might stir some talk about the rule that requires candidates for Congress to live in the state — but not necessarily within district boundaries.
While the Second District stretches through St. Louis, St. Charles and Lincoln Counties, Haas calls the Central West End home.

I can consider supporting Mr. Haas. Let’s start with answers to following:
Q1: Do you support the right of women to choose to abort their fetus?
Q2: Do you support the right to same sex marriage?
Q3: Do you support embryonic stem cell research?
Q4: Do you support the interpretation of the US Constitution as a “living document”?
The style of these questions may tempt you to answer with simple either “yes” or “no”. But your answers could be complicated and nuanced. If you wish to elaborate, I would be happy to read. Or you may direct me to another source (website?) that may help me to understand your positions.
I believe that our national approach to these issues reflects the foundation upon which our nation will approach other issues such as the economy, foreign relations, and national defensive strategy. A candidate’s response to the four questions above tells me the candidate’s worldview, and hence, their response to the other issues.
One recommendation to Mr. Haas: reflect professionalism in all public venues, even in your writing style on this blog.
Thank you.
God help us is right Yossarian. Bill Haas is a nutcase as you can see by his comments. Thomas Knapp, the Libertarian, is looking good to me. Here’s a little tip for you, Bill. Don’t post antagonistic remarks on a popular website for everyone to read. These people are voters. Duh!
Hooray for Bill Haas!!!! So glad to see you back in the political eye! We’ve missed you. Proud Dem obviously isn’t familiar with you or your style. Like you, I don’t live in the second district, but somehow there must be a way I can still vote for you!!
Bill:
Walk, don’t run. Take your time. You will obviously need a map because you don’t live in the district. So get to know it. Criss-cross it. Don’t take a laptop or a PDA though.
Congratulations, Bill. I will be voting for you come November.
Our district should not be represented by the most radically conservative member of Congress. Your constituents are fairly middle-of-the-road, and should be represented by someone who takes each issue on its own merits.
Akin has always voted according to the right-wing ideology, instead of considering our best interests.
Congratulations on the upset, Bill! I have to admit that I expected the Democrats to nominate DeLear or Pentland.
Looks like it’s “Battle of the Carpetbaggers” in the 2nd District — Bill and I both live in the 1st District, and if Todd Akin is like most congressmen he probably lives, for all practical purposes, in DC, Virginia or Maryland.
In the wake of even lower than usual Libertarian Party primary turnout despite my efforts to change that, I’m trying to figure out how to run a campaign that, even if there’s no chance of me winning, helps make this a competitive race.
Unfortunately for that scenario, it looks like I’ll be running from the left of the Democratic nominee:
On foreign policy, I advocate withdrawal from Iraq, “political solution” or not, and oppose US intervention on behalf of Israel or any other country in foreign conflicts.
On climate change, Bill Haas is still waiting for Al Gore to “lead” us — I already light my home with CFLs, mow my yard with a human-powered mower, and have already committed to a carbon-neutral campaign with the purchase of Verified Emission Reduction Credits.
On taxes, Bill non-specifically supports lower taxes for the middle class. I specifically support lowering taxes for the poorest Americans first, through regular annual increases in the personal exemption to the income tax and a “FICA floor” equal to that personal exemption (thus lifting the burden of the most regressive of American tax schemes on the working poor).
I agree with Bill on health care. He says he’s for a “single payer” system, and so am I. Of course, under my “single payer” system, Bill Haas would be the single payer for his health care and I’d be the single payer for mine, and so forth, so maybe we’re not quite on the same page after all
I suspect that Bill is ready for a cage match with all comers. So am I. Will Todd Akin get in the ring or cower behind his special interest war chest and hope for the best?
Best regards,
Tom Knapp
Libertarian for US House of Representatives
2nd District
I am afraid, very afraid. I live in this district and couldn’t even believe it was the same Bill Haas on the ballot. I am thinking he doesn’t live in my area. He is one of those crazy CITY politicians. After that amazement and chuckle, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the news this morning that he had actually won. I am afraid! Crazy neurotic or righteous right. Was it the new WalMart in Manchester that made him run in this district!
This is so cool! Just like a plot in a Carl Hiaasen Book
I am familiar with Bill Haas and his style and I find it atrocious. I am embarassed for the Democrats of the 2nd district and the state of Missouri. There are many more important races in the state and the 2nd district race will now just be a waste of Democratic money.
I saw Bill talk to voters a few times and hopefully he is not using notecards or shaking like a blender. His comments earlier is what made me so mad. If he feels it is appropriate for a candidate to post on a comment board. If your going to be a candidate for US House of Representatives please be professional. All I ask for.
Edit:
