Virvus’ daughter overcomes ward split to win seat
While State Rep. Robin Wright-Jones was slugging it out with Rodney Hubbard for a Senate seat, an intense primary for her current job was quietly shaping up on the city’s near southside.
The winner in that contest was Tishaura O. Jones, who — while not related to Wright-Jones — is the daughter of another political Jones, former city comptroller Virvus Jones.
Since leaving the comptroller’s office, Virvus has re-emerged behind the scenes at City Hall, advising the charter-change efforts a few years back and lobbying for developers Mike and Steve Roberts.
Tishaura, meanwhile, staked a claim in the city’s Eighth Ward, where she has been committeewoman since 2002.
Her decision, however, to run for the State House while at the same time seeking re-election for her committee post sparked ire in the ward organization, enough that they endorsed her opponent, April Harris.
In Tuesday’s primary, Jones failed to carry her own ward, and lost her committee seat by a wide margin to another candidate, Cara Jensen, who had the support of Eighth Ward Alderman Stephen Conway.
But Jones did well enough outside her home turf to defeat Harris, clinching a State House seat and becoming the latest member of a political family to extend its legacy this election.
Joining Jones in Jefferson City will likely be Steve Brown –whose late aunt, Sue Shear, represented the Clayton area for many years — and Chris Carter, grandson of the late Paula Carter.
Cole McNary, son of former St. Louis County executive and current head of the Missouri Gaming Commission Gene McNary, also has a good shot to replace State Rep. Jane Cunningham if he can hang on to beat the Democrat in the traditionally Republican district covering Chesterfield.

The most prominent and direct political legacy to win election on August 5th is Rochelle Walton Gray. Her father, former State Rep. Elbert Walton, Jr., served in the House from 1979 to 1993. Furthermore, she is replacing her step mother, State Rep. Juanita Head Walton, who has held the seat since 2000. That is a legacy!
