Blunt touts savings on state mileage
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Even as gas prices remain in the stratosphere, Gov. Matt Blunt is touting savings on mile-reimbursements to state employees.
The key, Blunt’s office said today, is encouraging workers to take a rental car or state-owned sedan on some trips — rather than paying them a higher rate per a mile when they take their own personal vehicle. (In other words, the state doesn’t pay depreciation when the car belongs to Enterprise.)
According to Blunt, the push has saved taxpayers $15 million since he took office.

I wonder how Nixon will find a way to paint the employees as abused because the wouldn’t pay them more to take their own car. Or maybe he can find some sneaky deal with the “Big Rental”. Thank you God for giving us a Governor that treated our tax money with respect.
Governor, how’s that MOHELA thing working out?
Come on people. You can attack him for a lot of other things, but saving money like this is smart and laudable.

…and took health care away from kids.
…and took money away from college students
…and gutted the workmans comp. program
…and made himself a one-term loser
…and on and on and on…
great job, governor. don’t let the door hit you in the _ss on the way out!
Matt Blunt will go down as one of the best Governor’s Missouri has ever had. He brought fiscal stability after years of waste and mismanagement and demonstrated the decisive leadership Missourians expect from their public officials but don’t often get.
After all these phoney scandals started by liberals including this newspaper have subsided, I predict Blunt will come back and serve once again as Missouri’s Governor.
Garrison, what does MOHELA have to do with it? You libs will find anything to attack. And btw, MOHELA is effected by the national financial climate, which is kind of stressed right now if you didn’t know. But you libs don’t understand markets much, do you Mr. Garrison?
Now, onto the matter at hand — saving taxpayers millions. Congrats to the Gov. This is a conservative, commonsense way to reform government and streamline it. This is the kind of reform that other states and — dare I say — the feds should use as an example.
I know Garrison can’t understand it, but there was NEVER a better time to sell MOHELA’s assets than when they were sold. If they still had them, they would be in line with the other welfare receipients for the 700billion bailout.
And why change MOHELA from an fund for student loans to a fund for giving his buddies lucrative construction contracts on the state teat?
That suckling thing he’s helped his friends and relatives with has been a hallmark of his time in office, but he’s got nothing on the feds in that regard. Making a state worker take a crappy taurus to the Lake for a weekend of outlet shopping, er, “training” is streamlining government? The truth of the matter is state republicans are the beneficiaries of much corporate largess from Enterprise, so a hefty portion of those rental fees wind up as kickbacks to the state GOP. And don’t forget Blunt also named Enterprise Executives Don Ross and Ray Wagner to the Appellate Judicial Commission and the Government Reform Commission, respectively, during his tenure. If, by streamlining government, you mean planting it firmly in the pocket of ERAC, mission accomplished.
Penelope,
FYI, the contract for state rental cars was entered upon in 2003…that would be under Holden, a Democrat. So while executives at the Enterprise Rent A Car company (a Missouri born and bred company, I might add, so you should be supportive of a state contract going to a state company) might support Republicans, the contract was bid and won by them…unless you want to challenge Holden’s awarding of taxpayer monies the same way you do Governor Blunt’s. And I’m pretty sure most state cars are flex fueled Impalas now, not crappy Taurus’ :-).
