Illinois Ethics — The Sequel

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — A day after shoving aside Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s veto and forcing a major new campaign fundraising ethics law on him Monday, the Illinois Senate is currently debating Blagojevich’s counter-punch ethics bill.

It’s an uncomfortable debate, because Blagojevich’s bill (prehaps predictably) specifically goes after lawmakers, prohibiting legislators from holding second jobs in local government (a bunch of them do) and makes it more politically complicated for them to raise their own salaries.

The background: The landmark bill passed yesterday prohibits major state contractors from giving money to the elected officials who control their contracts — a direct shot at Blagojevich, who has raised millions of dollars that way. Blagojevich’s new ethics bill is widely viewed as a face-saving measure in the wake of Monday’s humiliating 55-0 Senate vote to override his veto of the earlier bill.

Debate on Blagojevich’s bill is winding up right now. Prediction: It will pass the Senate (many of them are up for re-election this year, and who wants to have to explain a “no” on any ethics bill to the voters?). But it’s likely DOA in the House, where Blagojevich-bashing is the favorite pasttime.
